WeCanBeAnything is an education advocacy campaign, born of a partnership between the Apl.de.Ap Foundation (AdAF) and the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation (NCAF). The campaign was conceived after apl.de.ap (aka Allan Pineda), the Filipino-American member of the world-famous Black Eyed Peas, expressed his desire to help improve the education situation in the Philippines. From his own experience, he knew that, for many Filipinos mired in poverty or other difficult circumstances, education is the only long-term ticket to a better life. Unfortunately, millions among the youth are deprived of this ticket to opportunity or drop out of school for a variety of reasons. One basic obstacle is the severe shortage of public school classrooms; the Department of Education (DepEd) estimates the backlog at 66800 classrooms as of schoolyear 2010-2011, Another factor is the barren environment for learning in many parts of the country due to scarce resources with which to set up libraries and similar facilities. Several organizations have launched programs to address these and many other problems besetting the Philippine educational system. In the USA and UK, almost all parents buy into the idea that infants should learn to read & write as soon as possible. Indeed, many parents measure the intelligence & potential of their children by their ability to read and write at an early age. Some even try to give their babies a head start by showing them "Baby Einstein" dvds against all the advice of pediatricians and education experts. The newspapers advise parents to check out the school league tables and do everything they can to get their children into "good schools". What is a good school? A school that's good at getting children to pass SATs. Nothing else is of interest. The end result? 1) Good teachers (and the vast majority are good) are increasingly demoralized. They either leave the system or just resign themselves to jumping through the latest administrative hoops. Their knowledge, expertise, creativity and unique skills are sacrificed in favour of "targets", "assessment" and "conforming" to goverment frameworks. 2) Children suffer. They are increasingly stressed out by school. Their intellectual curiosity is stifled. More and more leave school unable to read or write. As children get older, they are less able to meet the more rigorous intellectual challenges of higher education - their minds are less flexible, having been constrained too early. Black studies 'claptrap' comments get chronicle of higher education blogger fired

Via The Huffington Post: "The Chronicle of Higher Education dismissed one of its bloggers after outcry over a blog post she wrote questioning the legitimacy of black studies as an academic discipline. Naomi Schaefer Riley, a lecturer and author who wrote for the Chronicle's blog, Brainstorm, was let go after readers pushed back on an essay she published last week titled "The Most Persuasive Case For Eliminating Black Studies? Just Read the Dissertations." Riley's essay responded to a sidebar of a story in the Chronicle which profiled several up-and-coming black studies scholars in the process of writing dissertations. Riley looked at the titles of the dissertations -- on subjects like the role of race in housing policy and the history of black midwifery in the United States -- and called them "left-wing victimization claptrap." --The Hunger Games Trilogy-- You've heard the hype, but have you read the books? I have, and they promote an agenda of death education, child murder and exploitation, and psychopathic role models for young children. Let me take a moment and emphasize this last point: some chumps in our twisted and evil society are actually holding up the protagonist of The Hunger Games (Katniss Everdeen) as a role model for young girls. For example, George A. Dunn, Nicolas Michaud, and William Irwin, in their promotional book "The Hunger Games And Philosophy: A Critique Of Pure Treason," a desperate and cheesy attempt to get somebody in this hedonistic nation to take an interest in philosophy, actually writes the following: "We love the Hunger Games trilogy for many reasons. It offers us a strong and resourceful heroine, Katniss Everdeen, whom we all can admire and aspire to be like" (Introduction, page 1). So, in this short video, I will simply focus on the psychopathic nature of the protagonist (Katniss). For example, according to the books, and these are Katniss' own thoughts of herself found within the books, Katniss is an unforgiving, distrustful, manipulative, violent girl, who we find on the first page trying to drown a cat. Dinosaurs!- a fun-filled trip back in time! (pt. 1)

Here's a favorite from my childhood. Dinosaurs! - A Fun-Filled Trip Back in Time! is a movie released by Golden Book Video in 1987 under their "GoldenVision" series. It stars Fred Savage playing a grade school student named Philip who gives a class report on dinosaurs, with the help of an animated chalkboard and Will Vinton's claymation dinosaurs. Originally created in 1980, when it was known more simply as Dinosaur, the 17-minute claymation short by Vinton Studios would later be used for this 1987 video. The popular short is also played at the Smithsonian Museum and has won numerous awards. Dinosaurs! was designed as an educational film for young children new to the world of prehistoric life; the video slipcase describes the film with "Discover the real monsters who dominated the earth for millions of years!" The cartoon animation of the chalkboard is used to elaborate on attributes such as the extinction of the dinosaurs as well as their brain capacity, while the Vinton claymation illustrates, in a colorful and simplistic manner, the brutal lives of the many dinosaurs.
