The liquid fluoride thorium reactor: what fusion wanted to be

Google Tech Talks November 18, 2008 ABSTRACT Electrical power is, and will increasingly become, the desired form of energy for its convenience, safety, flexibility and applicability. Even future transportation embraces electric cars, trains, and chemical fuel production (jet fuel, hydrogen, etc.) based upon an abundant electrical supply. Although existing energy sources can and should be expanded where practical, no one source has shown to be practical to rapidly fulfill the world's energy requirements effectively. Presently there is an existing source of energy ideally suited to electrical energy production that is not being exploited anywhere in the world today, although its existence and practicality has been know since the earliest days of nuclear science. Thorium is the third source of fission energy and the LFTR is the idealized mechanism to turn this resource into electrical energy. Enough safe, clean energy, globally sustainable for 1000's of years at US standards. This talk is aimed at explaining this thorium energy resource from fundamental physics to today's practical applications. The presentation is sufficient for the non-scientist to grasp the whole subject, but will be intriguing to even classically trained nuclear engineers. By providing the historical context in which the technology was discovered and later developed into a power reactor, the story of thorium's disappearance as an energy source is revealed. Also, because so many people have asked: The main downsides/negatives to this technology, are basically politics, corrosion and being scared of nuclear radiation. Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors were created 50 years ago by an American chap called Alvin Weinberg, but the American Government realised you can't weaponise the by-products and so they weren't interested. Another point, yes it WAS corrosive, but these tests of this reactor were 50 years ago, our technology has definately improved since then so a leap to create this reactor shouldn't be too hard. And nuclear fear is extremely common in the average person, rather irrational though it may be. More people have died from fossil fuels and even hydroelectric power than nuclear power. Kirk Sorensen's Tech Talk, delivered at Google on July 20, 2009. Successfully developing a liquid-fluoride thorium reactor (LFTR) would essentially solve our planets energy problems for thousands of years, because it would allow us to fully utilize the energy in natural thorium, which makes up 0.0012% of the Earths crust. Most of the research and development work for this technology was done by Oak Ridge National Labs back in the 50s and 60s. They were working to a different set of overall objectives, nevertheless, there are many lessons to be gleaned from their work that can help us to avoid pitfalls and develop LFTR into a high-performance, high-reliability power supply.

Thorium to reduce gas prices, question to president obama

Mr. President, The United States has over 10000 years worth of clean electricity and synthetic fuel if we invest in an innovative nuclear technology called the Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor. This technology is a completely different approach to nuclear energy because it suffers from none of the drawbacks associated with today's reactors. Core meltdown is impossible, and waste is not produced since the reactor can run on clean and plentiful thorium. Liquid Fluoride Reactors could produce synthetic gasoline for as low as $2 per gallon. This would dramatically lower the cost of living for everyone and clean up the environment since the reactor and synthetic fuel do not produce greenhouse gasses. China has recognized this and intends to make thorium and Liquid Fluoride Reactors a cornerstone of their national energy policy over the next 20 years. Mr. President, we need a large scale, sustainable, and comprehensive solution to our economic and environmental problems. Thorium represents the least expensive path towards achieving this goal. I would like to know why the federal government not aggressively developing Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors.

Mr. President, you often say there is no silver bullet to our energy problems. However, there are bullets made of thorium and uranium. Our question to you is why is the federal government not accelerating research into fluid-fueled, molten salt reactors that run on thorium? Nuclear reactors that run on thorium offer superior advantages in safety, proliferation, waste, and cost. -There is enough thorium in the US to power our economy for the next 1000 years -Its waste lasts only 300 years compared to 10000 years for traditional plants -Thorium plants are 50% cheaper than traditional plants Thorium and fluid-fueled, molten salt reactor technology seems to have the best advantages when it comes to replacing fossil fuels, and improving the environment by offering safe, clean, efficient, cheap, and reliable power. The key points are: * We built and ran prototype Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors (LFTR) a form of molten salt reactor during the 60's. We have built LFTRs before. * Alvin Weinberg the man who invented and held the patents for our existing light water reactors (LWR) spent the rest of his career advocating the use of LFTR technology for it's safety and other advantages over LWR technology. Eventually he was fired for this advocacy even though he invented the LWR. * Once the development of a full scale LFTR design is completed and mass production started we expect a LFTR would be much cheaper to produce than a Light Water Reactor (LWR) we use today. The fuel to run a LFTR would be much more abundant and vastly cheaper than the uranium fuel used in today's light water reactors. * There is 4 times as much thorium as uranium on the planet, and we have thousands of years worth of thorium fuel available just in the USA. It is a waste product from neodymium rare earth mining. Some mines produce enough thorium as waste to meet the power demands of the entire earth for a year, in just one year of mining for neodymium. * Existing LWRs use less than 1% of the mined uranium as fuel, what can't be used for fuel is depleted uranium or radioactive ...

The world population is growing and so is energy demand. It has been suggested that a fundamental solution is needed to stop climate change, stabilize population growth, and satisfy an energy hungry world. It is physically impossible for solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, tidal, and biomass to generate enough power to meet even our current energy needs without destroying the environment in the process. A technology that is gaining popularity called the Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor will cost 50% less than current reactors manufactured today. This reactor is also impossible to melt down, does not require expensive fuel fabrication, is proliferation resistant, generates 1/1000th the amount of waste our current reactors produce, and this waste lasts only 300 years instead of 10000. As of 2007 a large group of nuclear physisists and engineers have created the Thorium Energy Alliance which seeks to build a $600 million liquid fluoride thorium reactor proof of concept which can then be mass produced by corporate entities and sold worldwide. This technology is also being actively pursued in France and Japan which expects their first reactor of this type to come online in 2014. Why is the United States government not funding this kind of groundbreaking technology that has the potential to bring cheap, clean, safe electricity that will stop climate change and power the entire world for thousands of years?

Liquid fluoride reactors: a new beginning for an old idea

During this period, he developed a great interest to pursue both fission and fusion reactor design basics, which separately cumulated in a long term fellowship from the Canadian Fusion Fuels Technology Project (later ITER Canada) for his work on the use of high Tc superconductors in the fusion field and also work for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited on worldwide reactor design comparisons. Since then he has been teaching at the Carleton University physics department and continued his investigations primarily in the field of Molten Salt Reactors, also known as Liquid Fluoride Reactors. David founded Ottawa Valley Research Associates Ltd to expand these efforts and has completed a license agreement with a European firm with a goal of development of a new generation of Molten Salt Reactors.

The key points are: * We built and ran prototype Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors (LFTR) a form of molten salt reactor during the 60's. We have built LFTRs before. * Alvin Weinberg the man who invented and held the patents for our existing light water reactors (LWR) spent the rest of his career advocating the use of LFTR technology for it's safety and other advantages over LWR technology. Eventually he was fired for this advocacy even though he invented the LWR. * Once the development of a full scale LFTR design is completed and mass production started we expect a LFTR would be much cheaper to produce than a Light Water Reactor (LWR) we use today. The fuel to run a LFTR would be much more abundant and vastly cheaper than the uranium fuel used in today's light water reactors. * There is 4 times as much thorium as uranium on the planet, and we have thousands of years worth of thorium fuel available just in the USA. It is a waste product from neodymium rare earth mining. Some mines produce enough thorium as waste to meet the power demands of the entire earth for a year, in just one year of mining for neodymium. * Existing LWRs use less than 1% of the mined uranium as fuel, what can't be used for fuel is depleted uranium or radioactive waste.
