Youtube's closed caption transcribe audio beta

YouTube has now released the ability to view closed captions on any video, even if they did not upload a transcript. This software is based on Google's speech recognition technologies. It appears that the closed captions take either several minutes to appear after that video has been uploaded onto YouTube. Closed captioning a youtube video

Describes how to add closed captioning to your YouTube videos with just a text editor. The method simply involves playing back the video using QuickTime, capturing the time-codes and pasting into a text editor. Setting up quicktime for scc closed captions.

Closed captioning for videos

I've been playing around with the feature on YouTube to associate a Closed Captioning file with your video and thereby allowing hearing impaired folks to "read" what you are saying while speaking. I'm using the site www.overstream.net This means your video has to be public to use this to create the SRT file to upload to youtube for the closed captioning. I also tested a nifty little stand alone tool that worked well also. So I upload this file, when it's live I can go to the overstream site and create a closed caption for it. I'm sure there are stand alone products that you can use as well. I found one here www.doom9.org That allows you to open your wmv video file and then make the captions. Then you just save as an SRT format file and when you go to "Captions and Subtitles" on your video it takes you to the page where you can upload your SRT file. I love this clip, but the only version that was up here with English subtitles was poor quality, and the version that had good quality had no subtitles. So I decided to combine the good quality original audio video with YouTube optional subtitles. And there's a new feature that will allow you to automatically translate subtitles from any language. Note: I don't speak Spanish, so my timing might be a bit off and I was using the text of the version with burned-in subtitles. I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (www.youtube.com by duplicating several times the one in www.youtube.com . This one too is completely empty: no images, no audio. It is uploaded here for experimental reuses in closed captioning platforms. Obviously, it is in the public domain, even though YT does not offer this licensing option. Update Jan 14, 2012: As I tried to explain in the comments to irate/baffled/amused viewers. I uploaded this video for a purely instrumental purpose: seeing how online collaborative subtitling/captioning instruments can be diverted to collaboratively translate normal texts, and to then export the translation, as you would export the file of translated subtitles. Of course, you can also collaboratively translate on a wiki page, but the advantage of doing it in a subtitling app is that the original text above the translated part cannot get deleted: this makes revision easier. I started toying with this 2 and half years ago with DotSUB: see etcjournal.com . But the problems with DotSUB for that are that a) it does not allow you to have subtitles longer that what its programmers deemed suitable; b) subtitles HAVE to be time-coded and can only be exported in time-coded formats, and it's a bore to have to delete all the time codes if what you want is just a plain text translation of a normal text. So I decided to try again with Universal Subtitles, where you can transcribe without time-coding. and where you can translate the "non time ...
