Douglas mcmeekin: yachana - geotourism and sustainable development

Douglas McMeekin: Yachana - Geotourism and Sustainable Development
The Yachana Foundation, which works in the Amazon region of Ecuador, successfully achieves sustainable development through tourism and education. Geotourism, a term coined by the National Geographic, is tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place - its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. This is the commitment of the Foundation through the award winning Yachana Lodge. The Lodge, now part of the Foundation, besides being an incredible place for visitors to see and learn about the Amazon, is also a teaching facility for the Yachana Technical High School and an income generator to help support the school. Education, sustainable tourism and protection of the rainforest are all subjects that Douglas McMeekin will bring to his presentation.

Peace parks foundation

Peace Parks Foundation
'Peace parks' join fragmented wildlife habitats and form an interconnected mosaic of protected areas and cross-border wildlife corridors, which allow for the free movement of animals across international boundaries. They offer conservation as a viable land-use option for the benefit of the local people and allow them to utilise their natural resources sustainably. In 1997, Dr Anton Rupert, together with Dr Nelson Mandela and HRH Prince Bernard of the Netherlands, founded Peace Parks Foundation (PPF). Their goal was to create a network of protected areas across international borders to ensure the preservation of southern Africa's biological diversity whilst at the same time supporting sustainable economic development and promoting regional peace and stability. Since then, PPF has made great strides towards making their shared vision a reality, by facilitating the establishment of ten Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCA's) across southern Africa. The TFCA concept is one which operates in harmony with surrounding communities, creating sustainable local, national and regional benefit flows, and providing local people with a reason to protect their natural assets. www.peaceparks.org

Zeitgeist 3: moving forward (nl subs/ondertitel - full length)

Zeitgeist 3: Moving Forward (NL subs/ondertitel - full length)
Zeitgeist: Moving Forward [2011] by director Peter Joseph is a 162 minute film work which continues what the prior two films of the Zeitgeist Film Series started: a critical look at the "Zeitgeist" or 'Spirit /Awareness of the Time'. A prominent underlying thesis of the Film Series is that a great many notions, beliefs and practices currently engaged in today and assumed as "presupposed", "given" or seemingly empirical to our societal approaches and values are not only intellectually/historically incorrect but highly detrimental to our personal and social progress and sustainability. Zeitgeist: Moving Forward focuses on the very fabric of the social order: Monetary-Market Economics. While the majority of the world today have slowly come to see some basic flaws in the economic system we share, as large scale debt defaults, inflation, industrial pollution, resource depletion, rising cancer rates and other signposts emerge to bring the concern into the realm of "public health" overall, very few however consider the economic paradigm as a whole as the source. The tendency is to demand reform in one area or another, avoiding the possibility that perhaps the entire system is intrinsically flawed at the foundational level. ZMF presents the case that it is, indeed, the very foundational mechanics of this system that generates the patterns of behavior and unsustainable methods of conduct that are leading to the vast spectrum of detrimental consequences both personal, social, and ...

Sustainable energy in nepal, solar cookers, briquette oven, pasteurizers, dryers

Sustainable Energy in Nepal, Solar cookers, briquette oven, pasteurizers, dryers
Documentary of a Nepalese organization called FoST, which stands for "Foundation for Sustainable Technologies". The organization FoST is providing low-cost, low-tech, easily-applicable and locally built sustainable technologies for improving the quality of life of poor rural communities and to protect the fragile environment of Nepal. Nepal is a beautiful country and is famous for it's cultural treasures, but Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and has many problems. FoST has been developing a wide selection of products such as parabolic solar cookers, solar ovens, briquette burners, solar dryers, solar water pasteurizers, water purification systems and heat retain boxes to fight burning issues such as poverty, pollution, deforestation, water-borne and smoke-borne diseases. They are also working to further empower women by providing training and employment opportunities through projects designed to create micro-enterprises in sustainable technology. The documentary was made by a Dutch family donating their time and skills to increase awareness for the founder of FoST Sanu Kaji Shrestha and all the dedicated volunteers working at FoST. Summer of sustainability - australian music festivals

Summer of Sustainability - Australian Music Festivals
Summer of Sustainability is an action learning partnership between government, non-profit organisations and some of Australia's leading commercial music festivals. In the summer of 2008, Sustainability Victoria went out to 5 Victorian music festivals to find out what they thought about sustainable events. The questions were simple - what did the festivals think about sustainability? what were they already doing? And how did they think they could do it better? Along the way, the partnership grew to include Victoria's Sustainable Living Foundation (SLF). The SLF are developing an online events planner to accelerate the uptake of sustainable events. It'll include leading event profiles, 'how to' guides and resources, a sustainable events products and services directory and a video/innovators hub (including the full Summer of Sustainability 2008 dvd). Register here to find out more www.slf.org.au For more information on Sustainability Victoria visit www.sustainability.vic.gov.au

Maa foundation project bangladesh

MAA Foundation Project Bangladesh
This video shows the area and work which MAA does in Chittagong, Bangladesh. It first shows the work the children and parents do, as well as where they live. Cut to the MAA teacher entering into the resource center built inside the communal housing. Ends with a function to celebrate the school year-end! MAA works with a two tiny groups of 10 children, starting at the age of 5-7. We had them enrolled in the local government school (which is supposed to be free and compulsory), provide them with pencils, notebooks, uniforms, shoes. After going to school, we give them a nutritious lunch and they spend the rest of the day with the teacher, doing homework, playing games (all supplies provided by us), arts, music... The idea is to give them the home-support that is lacking, as well as encourage cognitive learning while maintaining links w/ the local environment for long-term sustainability. It has been 2 years since we started and in that time, 9 children have received government awards. One child was chosen to feature in an Asian Heroes documentary by Channel News Asia. All 22 children are amongst the top 15 in their class (each class having close to 200 students). The amazing thing about this is that when they started, they didn't even know how to hold a pencil! for more info: www.maaf.ca

AID Foundation, Philippines, ram pumps - water for villages - Ashden Award winner
This video can be downloaded here: www.ashdenawards.org AID Foundation won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2007. You can follow us on: Facebook bit.ly Twitter twitter.com Blog: www.ashdenawards.org Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc. has developed and installed newly designed ram pumps in 68 hillside villages in the Philippines. These ram pumps, capable of pumping water up to 200 metres high, are bringing clean water to over 15000 people who previously had to undertake often difficult and dangerous journeys just in order to collect clean water. They now have ample water supply, around 200 to 1000 litres/day for each household, which is used for washing, sanitation and irrigating crops. By developing an improved ram pump design and involving communities in installation and maintenance, AIDFI has avoided the pitfalls other ram pump projects encountered which made them ultimately unsustainable. With the support of the community, AIDFI pumps can last at least twenty years. The success of the scheme has also changed the mindset of local people who now see renewable energy as the best option for them. There is a huge need for this type of technology in areas where there is no immediate access to clean running water.
