The seminar introduces the main ways economists think about the ideas of "sustainability", Nick explains how economists ideas of substitutability between various measures of capital (physical, resource endowments broadly conceived, human capital, and social capital) used to generate long run consumption lead to conflict with ecological notions of capital where substitutability isn't a key idea, but where boundary and threshold notions...and their impact on consumption possibilities...does make a big difference. Cities and developers across the globe recognize that they can increase asset value and attract business/people through sustainable development. Sustainable development includes improving esthetics, mobility, the environment, and energy systems. The US census determined that 80% of the population now lives in cites, up from 40% one hundred years ago. The Brookings Institution's Metropolitan Policy Program reports that approximately 50% of the buildings that will exist in 2030 have yet to be designed. This represents a tremendous opportunity to apply sustainable development concepts. Unless cities and developers are provided with alternatives to the current energy production, distribution, and supply system; fossil fuel energy consumption will surge by 34 quads while renewable sources increase by only 3 quads over the next 23 years according to the US EIA Annual Energy Outlook. This continued emphasis on fossil fuels is expected to increase carbon emissions by over 2200 million metric tons over this same period. Through partnerships with private sector, universities, and governments; companies can finance, design, and build more efficient, smarter, and esthetically pleasing local energy systems. In 2004, Hurricane Jeanne swept through the historical port city of Gonaïves in Haiti, sending walls of water and mud down the surrounding slopes and changing the face of the city forever. A project managed by the International Labour Organization (ILO) has been helping local residents organize themselves to build erosion control networks to protect the city from future mudslides and heavy run-off. Sustainable urban development in zaragoza spain (eco ciudad valdespartera)

The urban area of Zaragoza, the eight in Spain in terms of population (almost 700000 inhabitants) has in recent years demonstrated its will to make the most of its strategic position in the peninsular - on the one hand the Madrid-Barcelona axis and on the other, the Valencia-Bilbao axis, through strong investment in infrastructures, renewing its productive structure through sustainable urban development in the shape of a series of projects which have are giving excellent results. Investment in infrastructure has taken the form of various projects, both highways and a network of peripheral roads, motorways and fast lanes, the extension of routes to the airport in the last few years and particularly the start-up of the high speed train covering the Madrid-zaragoza-Barcelona route. In relation to this latter project, Zaragoza is part of the high speed cities network, among whose objectives are: defining joint promotion and development strategies and exchanging experiences and information. Also, without ignoring the intense concern for, and the activities carried out in relation to, conservation and intervention in the historic city, of particular note in terms of sustainable development in Zaragoza in the last few years is the so-called Ecociudad Valdespartera (eco-city). Israel hosts delegates in sustainable development

A group of 30 men and women involved in sustainable development are in Israel participating in a Foreign Ministry sponsored program on the use of development technologies in Israel. Leaders from government branches, universities, development foundations and other non government organizations from Angola, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cameroon, China, India , Kenya, Kyrgzystan, Moldova, Nepal, Nigeria, Peru, the Phillipines, Russia, Rwanda, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Thailand, Ukraine and Zambia. Austin chief sustainability officer lucia athens affirms global population reduction agenda

On October 26th, 2010, Michael Shaw of Freedom Advocates and John Bush of Texans for Accountable Government went to Austin City Hall to meet Austin's new Chief Sustainability Officer, Lucia Athens. They asked her about global population reduction as it relates to sustainable development. Shaw: How do you reconcile the idea of unalienable rights with the goals of sustainability including the Global Biodeversity Assessment Report which calls for an 85 percent reduction in the human population? Athens: You know, the population issue I think is one of those really difficult ones to navigate, it's a very difficult topic to navigate in the context of sustainability and issues and programs. Its not an issue that I want to take on. Bush: You don't want to take on population reduction. That's a good thing! Athens: It just doesn't seem like a place that's gonna be a very fruitful place for us to go. I'm much more focused on practical things that we can try to implement in the near term future but also looking at the long term, that's a very divisive topic.
