Sprite Season Begins: The first sprites of summer are starting to appear in the skies of North America. The strange thing is, summer is almost three months away. "Sprite season is beginning early this year," says Thomas Ashcraft, who photographed these specimens last night from his observatory in New Mexico: "At precisely two minutes and twenty-six seconds after midnight March 30, 2012 there was an incredibly powerful bolt of lightning in the vicinity of Woodward, Oklahoma that spawned these red sprites," says Ashcraft. "I could see them from two states away!" He also recorded VLF and shortwave radio emissions from the cluster, which you can hear as the soundtrack to this video. Sprites are electrical discharges that come out of the top of thunderclouds, opposite ordinary lightning bolts which plunge toward Earth. Sprites can tower as high as 90 km above ground. That makes them a form of space weather as they overlap the zone of auroras, meteors, and noctilucent clouds. Because they are associated with lightning, sprites are most often seen in summer months, "but in the past few days sprites have been reported in Texas (particularly near the Mexican border) as well as here in New Mexico," notes Ashcraft. Red sprites

I recorded a long lasting red sprite display with my image intensified camera (night vision device) on the night Sep/6-7/2005. Sprites are electrical discharges that occur high above the cumulonimbus cloud of an active thunderstorm. They appear as luminous reddish-orange, neon-like flashes, last typically around 17 milliseconds, and are usually spawned by discharges of positive lightning between the cloud and the ground. Sprites usually occur in clusters of two or more simultaneous vertical discharges, typically extending from 65 to 75 km (40 to 47 miles) above the earth. Also in the video in one blue jet. The original 1994 video clip from which the terms "Red Sprites" and "Blue Jets" are derived. The video was made at a local TV station in Oklahoma City from example events recorded during an aircraft campaign to investigate basic properties of sprites. The clip shows examples of: (a) the first color images of sprites, (b) the first images of blue jets, (c) the first recordings of distinctive radio signatures associated with sprites, and (d) the first realistic determination of the altitude reached by sprites (~95 km). The blue jet images were obtained on 1 July 1994 over an extremely active thunderstorm that dumped 7 cm diameter hail on Texarkana, Texas/Arkansas. The horizon is slightly tilted because the aircraft were flying at close to their service ceiling of ~45000 ft. The clip shows the two jet aircraft that were flown ~50 km apart to obtain stereoscopic views, some of the instrumentation inside the aircraft used to make the observations, and the team. The reports based on these observations are (1) Sentman et al. (1995), "Preliminary results from the Sprites94 aircraft campaign: 1. Red Sprites", Geophys. Res. Red sprites, blue jets and lightning

Upper-atmospheric lightning or upper-atmospheric discharge are terms sometimes used by researchers to refer to a family of electrical-breakdown phenomena that occur well above the altitudes of normal lightning. The preferred current usage is transient luminous events (TLEs) to refer to the various types of electrical-discharge phenomena in the upper atmosphere, because they lack several characteristics of the more familiar tropospheric lightning. TLEs include red sprites, sprite halos, blue jets, gigantic jets, and elves. Sprites are large-scale electrical discharges which occur high above a thunderstorm cloud, or cumulonimbus, giving rise to a quite varied range of visual shapes. They are triggered by the discharges of positive lightning between the thundercloud and the ground.The phenomena were named after the mischievous sprite (air spirit) Puck in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. They normally are colored reddish-orange or greenish-blue, with hanging tendrils below and arcing branches above. They can also be preceded by a reddish halo.They often occur in clusters, lying 50 miles (80 km) to 90 miles (145 km) above the Earth's surface. Here we go! the episode many of you had been waiting for, and I know it's been a whopping 4 months since episode 2 so I am sorry I kept many of you waiting. But here it is! Mega Sonic Bros. AF episode 3 The Hedgehog War. Ok now time for some info... I know I used the old intro, sorry I just liked it a little better than the new one. IDKY, but I did. The New Intro was nice and everything, but I think I placed more heart and soul on the first one, not to mention that it took a lot longer to do... But oh well, Sorry for those who hate it, just skip a 1:30 into the video and Viola! it begins... I will place the credits for the episode at the end of part 2... Also as many of you saw my trailer to the first Official MSBAF movie... I am still thinking about which Fan characters to use... I am looking for 2 male hedgehogs, 1 female hedgehog, and A male and a female Cat. Just like you saw in my trailer. I am happy with the characters I have, but quite frankly, the sprite sheets suck! I only have a couple of poses for each and I have to do a lot of improvising. They all don't even have a Spin Dash, which you saw I had to use a blurred rotation of Trance TH in the Trailer to make up for it. So I guess i'll ask for a collab of spriters to come together see if I can find some better sheets. I was lucky enough to capture a "Blue Jet" sprite chasing a "Kakadu" squall line which stretched for hundreds of kilometers along the top end of Australia. 1st sprite short (fail)

NOTE 1-27-10: I just got some feedback from my film teacher. She liked that it had a chase and a good story (beginning, middle, & end), but wanted me to use ORIGINAL characters! I now feel lower than a snake's belly. Almost 9 hours of hard work only to be nay-said because of unoriginality... This was made for my Film Class Mid-Term. The trick was this: no dialogue, a chase was to be included, and needed a beginning-middle-&-end type of deal. So, this is what I could come up with on short notice. PS: It took me about 9 hours straight to make and finish this! I'm beat... Sprites in space

Sprites are large scale electrical discharges that occur high above the trailing stratiform anvil/precipitation regions of active thunderstorm systems. They are a particular type of electrical breakdown[3] characteristic of the early stages of lightning discharges (the streamer stage), but lacking the later stages of leaders and return strokes. Sprites appear as luminous reddish-orange, plasma-like flashes, that last longer (typically a few milliseconds) than normal lower stratospheric discharges (typically about 0.1-0.2 milliseconds). The red color of sprites has been determined from spectrographic measurements to be due to optical fluorescence from neutral molecular nitrogen in the air. They are triggered by the transient electric fields associated with discharges of positive lightning between the cloud and the ground, and are generally delayed behind the stroke by a few milliseconds. Sprites are typically centered above the causative lightning strokes, but may be laterally displaced from them by up to 50 km (30 miles). Sprites possess complex, vertically striated internal structure, giving rise to a quite varied range of visual shapes. Their apparent visible source altitude is about 75 km (47 mi), and from here they often develop both downward "tendrils" that extend to about 50 km (31 mi), and upward "branches" that extend to about 90 km (56 mi). Hey guys, Im sorry it has taken so long, I've had so many problems with the computer, the programs and I have been on holiday. This isn't the best episode and it isn't very long due to these problems, but it is leading upto a better and longer episode I promise you. Blue jets & blue starters - the video

Ten minutes of the 22 minute discovery video showing the first captured images of blue jets and blue starters. They were recorded during an aircraft research campaign conducted in 1994 to study sprites (see the related YouTube clip titled "Red Sprites & Blue Jets"). The TV camera is a monochrome low light CCD with a field of view of 90 degrees. The view is out the right hand side of the plane looking toward an extremely active thunderstorm over Texarkana, Texas/Arkansas. Over a 22 minute period 56 separate blue jets were recorded. Until recently, the events captured from this single storm accounted for more than 90% of the total inventory of blue jets that have been recorded worldwide. The "Blue Starters" seen here were first described in Wescott et al. (1996), "Blue starters: Brief upward discharges from an intense Arkansas thunderstorm", Geophys. Res. Lett., 23(16), pp 2153-2156. Sprites dancing above the andes, and hydroxyl airglow

Unfiltered time lapse imagery looking eastward from Cerro Tololo Observatory, Chile (30.169 S, 70.805 W) in January, 2005. The view is toward the East, and the dark ridge is the spine of the Andes Mountains, with the bright star field of the Southern Sky above. The wave-like undulations are hydroxyl airglow emissions in the mesosphere modulated by mountain waves. The camera used to take the images was a small astronomical camera, Starlight Xpress MX716. The images are 10 sec integrations at approximately 12 sec intervals. The clip is played back at 10 fps, giving a speed up factor of approximately 120 compared to real time. Just above the top of the ridge line, on the right, one observes sprites generated by an unseen thunderstorm on the other side of the Andes, approximately 500 km to the east in Argentina (verified separately using GOES images). It is interesting to note the clarity of the atmosphere and the complete absence of haze - stars suddenly pop into view on the horizon.
