Magnitude 9.0 earthquake strikes japan - 1 of 2

TOKYO — A magnitude 9.0 earthquake — the biggest in modern Japanese history — slammed the island nation's eastern coast Friday afternoon, unleashing a 23-foot tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tons of debris miles inland and prompting a "nuclear emergency." Hours later, the tsunami reached Hawaii, with initial reports citing little damage. Warnings blanketed the Pacific, putting areas on alert as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire US West Coast. According to Japanese police, 200 to 300 bodies were found in Sendai, the coastal city closest to the epicenter. Another 137 people were confirmed killed, with 531 missing. At least 627 people were injured. TV footage taken from a military plane showed fires engulfing a large waterfront area in northeastern Japan. Houses and other buildings were ablaze across large swathes of land in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture, near Sendai. The city, with a population of 74000, has residential, light industry and fishing areas. According to reports, police told the Kyodo news agency that a passenger train with an unknown number of people aboard was missing in one coastal area. The government ordered thousands of residents near a nuclear power plant in Onahama to evacuate because the plant's cooling system failed and pressure inside the reactor is rising. Dropped third strike = home run

Baseball at its finest in Japan.. Here, the pitcher throws a called third strike, but the ball hit the ground, making it live. However, nobody noticed until the batter started rounding the bases and was eventually called safe at home with a HR by the umps. It was a ludicrous mistake by the catcher not tagging the batter out which turned this K into an earned run.

Japanese heavy metal veterans LOUDNESS have announced that they will be heading to the United States this May for a string of headlining shows in celebration of their 30th Anniversary US Tour 2011 "Let It Go" was the first single off Loudness 1986 US release LIGHTNING STRIKES, also known as SHADOWS OF WAR as it was release in Japan. The album begins with the most commercial sounding song on the album, "Let It Go." However, the rest of the album is in a heavier mold, and is in a relatively similar style to the previous album, Thunder in the East. Lightning Strikes is the sixth studio album by the Japanese heavy metal band Loudness. The album, which was released on July 25, 1986, remained 15 weeks in the US charts, peaking at #64 (Billboard 200). The album was produced by Max Norman. Lyrics for the album are credited to Loudness, even if producer Max Norman did a lot of uncredited work on them. The album is known as Shadows of War in Japan, where it was released on March 24, 1986. The tracks are in a different order, and the song "Ashes in the Sky" is known as "Shadows of War." There is also a slight difference in some vocal melodies and arrangements.

MIlitary part of the raid included Low, Halsey, Duncan, Marc Mitscher of Hornet CV-8. Jimmy Doolittle led 16 B-25 Mitchell Bombers off the deck of the aircraft carrier Hornet (CV-8). The Doolittle Raid, April 18, 1942, was the first air raid by the United States to strike the Japanese home island during World War II. The mission was notable since it was the only time in US Military history that United States Army Air Forces bombers (16 modified B-25B bombers) were launched from a US Navy aircraft carrier on a combat mission. The raid demonstrated that the Japanese home islands were vulnerable to Allied air attack, and it provided an expedient means for US retaliation for Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. Tailstrike is an aviation term that describes an event in which the rear end of an aircraft touches (strikes) the runway. This can happen during takeoff of a fixed-wing aircraft if the pilot pulls up too rapidly, leading to the rear end of the fuselage touching the runway. It can also occur during landing if the pilot flares too aggressively. This is often the result of an attempt to land nearer to the runway threshold. A tailstrike is physically possible only on an aircraft with tricycle landing gear; with a tail dragger configuration, the tail is already on the ground. Some delta wing aircraft, which require a high angle of attack on takeoff, are fitted with small tailwheels to prevent tailstrikes. Examples include the Concorde and Saab Draken. Some aircraft, such as the Diamond Aircraft Industries Diamond DA20, have a permanent skid installed to protect the airframe in the event of a tailstrike. Others may be fitted with a temporary skid as tailstrikes are sometimes purposefully carried out during the certification of new aircraft. Tailstrike incidents rarely cause significant damage or cause danger, but may cause financial losses as the planes have to be thoroughly inspected and repaired.
