Seti from deep space - claudio maccone (seti talks)

SETI from Deep Space - Claudio Maccone (SETI Talks)
SETI Talks Archive: seti.org Dr. Maccone's new technical book about SETI, KLT and space missions to the Sun gravity focus will be presented in this talk. This 400-page book is entitled "Deep Space Flight and Communications", costs (unfortunately) over $100, and is divided into two parts: (1) The first 200 pages describe the astrophysics of light-bending caused by the mass of the Sun. Since the minimal focal distance turns out to lie in between 550 and 1000 AU, any future space mission to exploit this effect must necessarily be a "deep space mission". These FOCAL space missions are studied in the book and a Phase A Proposal was submitted by Dr. Maccone to ESA back in 2000. He now argues that a similar Proposal should be submitted to NASA. (2) The second part of the book is devoted to the KLT as optimal telecommunication tool (better than the FFT). The KLT for SETI was presented by the author in various talks, but, in this book, the reader will find the relativistic KLT also. This is useful to keep the radio link between the Earth and any deep-space spacecraft, such as the FOCAL spacecrafts to 550 AU. Dr. Maccone discovered mathematically that the relativistic KLT eigenfunctions are Bessel functions of the first kind, and that the KLT eigenvalues are the zeros of such Bessel functions. All this paves the way to "Star-Trek-like" relativistic space flights of the future.

Charles simonyi - space tourist

Charles Simonyi - Space Tourist
[Recorded Feb 7, 2008] Almost 50 years ago, many countries competed in technology innovation -- specifically, The Race to the Moon was a competition between the Soviets and Americans that the entire world watched. As the Cold War diminished, technology competition lessened and an era of cooperation materialized, and as early as 1975, scientific cooperation between the US and the Soviet Union was launched with the first cooperative human space flight. From the competitive to cooperative -- Now, the age of space exploration has advanced to a point where private citizens can travel to space. Using proven equipment and working side-by-side with professional astronauts and cosmonauts from a variety of countries, this new era is defining "outer space" as a new tourist destination. Between April 7 and April 21, 2007, Dr. Charles Simonyi successfully completed his 14-day mission to the International Space Station. Convinced that humans will one day travel and live in space, Dr. Simonyi traveled with the hope of advancing civilian space flight, assisting space station research, and involving the world's youth in the science of space travel. In this lecture, Charles Simonyi tells of his training, spaceflight and time aboard the International Space Station through his personal recollections and photos that highlight both the technical and human elements of spaceflight.

Google Personal Growth Series: Mindsight: The New Science of
Google Tech Talks April 22, 2009 ABSTRACT This interactive talk will examine two major questions: What is the mind? and How can we create a healthy mind? We'll examine the interactions among the mind, the brain, and human relationships and explore ways to create a healthy mind, an integrated brain, and mindful, empathic relationships. Here is one surprising finding: the vast majority (about 95%) of mental health practitioners around the globe, and even many scientists and philosophers focusing on the mind, do not have a definition of what the mind is! In this talk, well offer a working definition of the mind and practical implications for how to perceive and strengthen the mind itself—a learnable skill called mindsight. Then well build on this perspective to explore ways that the mind, the brain, and our relationships are influenced by digital information flow and also how they can be moved toward healthy functioning. Meteoroid threats to spacecraft - sigrid close (seti talks)

Meteoroid Threats to Spacecraft - Sigrid Close (SETI Talks)
Whether residing in low-earth orbit or traveling through interplanetary space, spacecraft must shield against environmental threats that could result in minor to catastrophic failure. One such threat is an impact by a meteoroid, which is a natural object ranging from 62 microns to meters in diameter that could cause either mechanical or electrical damage. In this presentation, Dr. Close will discuss current research into meteoroid and meteoroid plasma physics and how these tiny particles may offer insight into the formation of life on Earth.

Hidden Dimensions and String Theory - Joanne Hewett (SETI Talks)
SETI Talks Archive: seti.org Extra dimensions of space may be present in our universe. Their discovery would dramatically change our view of the cosmos and would prompt many questions. How do they hide? What is their shape? How many are there? How big are they? Do particles and forces feel their presence? This lecture will explain the concept of dimensions and show that current theoretical models predict the existence of extra spatial dimensions which could be in the discovery reach of present and near-term experiments. The manner by which these additional dimensions reveal their existence will be described.

Mysteries of the dark universe - 2009 buhl lecture

Mysteries of the Dark Universe - 2009 Buhl Lecture
Edward W. Kolb (known to most as "Rocky") gave the 2009 Buhl Lecture, sponsored by the Carnegie Mellon Department of Physics. In his lecture "Mysteries of the Dark Universe", Kolb talks about how most of the universe is in a mysterious form called dark matter and most of the energy in the universe is in an even more mysterious form called dark energy. In the next decade, the combination of new astronomical facilities, powerful particle accelerators and sensitive laboratory experiments promises to unlock the secrets of dark matter and dark energy, connecting the inner-space of the quantum with the outer space of the cosmos. Kolb is the Arthur Holly Compton distinguished Service Professor of Astronomy & Astrophysics. In addition to more than 200 scientific papers, he is a co-author of The Early Universe, the standard textbook on particle physics and cosmology. Race for kepler - jeffrey van cleve (seti talks)

Race for Kepler - Jeffrey Van Cleve (SETI Talks)
SETI Talks Archive: seti.org The Kepler Mission www.kepler.arc.nasa.gov is designed to detect transits of Earth-size planets orbiting in the "habitable zone" (HZ) around main-sequence stars of apparent visual magnitude 9 through 14, of F through M spectral type, by means of differential photometry of ~100000 stars in the constellation Cygnus. Jeff will discuss the box in temperature-diameter space ("The Corral") that Kepler was designed to search, and show the population of extrasolar planets known from ground-based radial velocity and gravitational lensing observations. He will present a calculation of the distance between Earth and the nearest transiting planet likely to be discovered by Kepler, and compare it to results of an all-sky planetary transit survey mission similar to TESS (The TESS PI has commented that "...when starships transporting colonists first depart the solar system, they may well be headed toward a TESS-discovered planet as their new home"). He will end with some speculation on why the end of the nominal Kepler mission coincides with the end of the Mayan calendar (and possibly the end of the world as we know it) on Dec. 21, 2012.

Geoengineering earth's climate

Geoengineering Earth's Climate
Google Tech Talks January, 7 2008 Emergency preparedness is generally considered to be a good thing, yet there is no plan regarding what we might do should we be faced with a climate emergency. Such an emergency could take the form of a rapid shift in precipitation patterns, a collapse of the great ice sheets, the imminent triggering of strong climate system feedbacks, or perhaps the loss of valuable ecosystems. Over the past decade, we have used climate models to investigate the potential to reverse some of the effects of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by deflecting some incoming sunlight back to space. This would probably be most cost-effectively achieved with the placement of small particles in or above the stratosphere. Our model simulations indicate that such geoengineering approaches could potentially bring our climate closer to the state is was in prior to the introduction of greenhouse gases. This talk will present much of what is known about such geoengineering approaches, and raise a range of issues likely to stimulate lively discussion. Speaker: Ken Caldeira Ken Caldeira is a scientist at the Carnegie Institution Department of Global Ecology and a Professor (by courtesy) at the Stanford University Department of Environmental and Earth System Sciences. The liquid fluoride thorium reactor: what fusion wanted to be

The Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor: What Fusion Wanted To Be
Google Tech Talks November 18, 2008 ABSTRACT Electrical power is, and will increasingly become, the desired form of energy for its convenience, safety, flexibility and applicability. Even future transportation embraces electric cars, trains, and chemical fuel production (jet fuel, hydrogen, etc.) based upon an abundant electrical supply. Although existing energy sources can and should be expanded where practical, no one source has shown to be practical to rapidly fulfill the world's energy requirements effectively. Presently there is an existing source of energy ideally suited to electrical energy production that is not being exploited anywhere in the world today, although its existence and practicality has been know since the earliest days of nuclear science. Thorium is the third source of fission energy and the LFTR is the idealized mechanism to turn this resource into electrical energy. Enough safe, clean energy, globally sustainable for 1000's of years at US standards. This talk is aimed at explaining this thorium energy resource from fundamental physics to today's practical applications. The presentation is sufficient for the non-scientist to grasp the whole subject, but will be intriguing to even classically trained nuclear engineers. By providing the historical context in which the technology was discovered and later developed into a power reactor, the story of thorium's disappearance as an energy source is revealed. But times have changed, and today, thorium ...

Dramatic changes in polar ice: are we waking sleeping giants

Dramatic Changes in Polar Ice: Are We Waking Sleeping Giants
Google Tech Talk August 10, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Waleed Abdalati. From disappearing Arctic sea ice to the rapid acceleration of Greenland and Antarcticas outlet glaciers, the Earths ice cover is changing in remarkable ways. Because ice plays a critical role in shaping our planets environment, understanding changes like these is crucial. Scientists ability to investigate the dramatic behavior of the Earths vast and remote frozen regions has been greatly enhanced in recent years by the development of sophisticated satellite observation capabilities. The space-based view provides both perspective and context that enable new insights into how and why ice is changing and what these changes may mean for life on Earth. Dr. Abdalati is Director of the Earth Science and Observation Center and Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Colorado. His research focuses on the development and application of remote sensing techniques to understand changes in high-latitude glaciers and ice sheets. From 1996 to 2008 he held various positions at NASA in which he conducted and oversaw NASA-funded research efforts and on glaciers, ice sheets, sea ice, and polar climate.. He has also been heavily involved in the scientific development of NASAs Ice Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) and its planned successor, ICESat-2, which have as their primary objective understanding changes in the Earths polar ice cover. Dr. Abdalati received his Masters and Ph.D. from the ...

Emmy noether and the fabric of reality

Emmy Noether and The Fabric of Reality
Google Tech Talk June 16, 2010 ABSTRACT: Emmy Noether made perhaps the most significant discovery of the 20th century. A female Jewish intellectual in Nazi Germany (you can do that math), Emmy's was a special approach to life. Noether's Theorem ties the laws of nature -- from Newton's laws to thermodynamics to charge conservation -- directly to the geometry of space and time, the very fabric of reality. It is the basis for the standard model of particle physics, quantum electrodynamics, and grand unified theories including supersymmetry and superstrings. As usual in physics, it gets really interesting when the theorem is violated: answers to the origin of mass and the matter-antimatter asymmetry problems emerge when Noether's theorem is violated. Two things should bother you about Noether's Theorem: (1) how come so few people have heard of Emmy Noether? and (2) why isn't her theorem well known to lovers of science? With the help of a bunch of straw, Ransom Stephens solves these problems on June 16, 2010. Speaker Info: Ransom Stephens, Ph.D. Ransom Stephens, Ph.D., is a professor of particle physics turned writer and speaker. He has worked on experiments at SLAC, Fermilab, CERN, and Cornell; discovered a new type of matter formed by the fusion of two photons, made the most precise measurements of rare bottom quark decays in the world, and was on the team that discovered the top quark. Margaret Sanger's Account Of Her Lecture To The Ku Klux Klan / Educational Video Film
In 1926, Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was a guest speaker at a KKK rally in Silverlake, New Jersey. Here is Sanger's account of her trip to talk to the Ku Klux Klan from her autobiography. All text and images form Fair Use. Text reads as follows: "...I accepted an invitation to talk to the women's branch of the Ku Klux Klan at Silver Lake, New Jersey, one of the weirdest experiences I had in lecturing. My letter of instruction told me what train to take, to walk from the station two blocks straight ahead, then two to the left. I would see a sedan parked in front of a restaurant. If I wished I could have ten minutes for a cup of coffee or bite to eat, because no supper would be served later. I obeyed orders implicitly, walked the blocks, saw the car, found the restaurant, went in and ordered some cocoa, stayed my allotted ten minutes, then approached the car hesitatingly and spoke to the driver. I received no reply. She might have been totally deaf as far as I was 1 concerned. Mustering up my courage, I climbed in and settled back. Without a turn of the head, a smile, or a word to let me know I was right, she stepped on the self-starter. For fifteen minutes we wound around the streets. It must have been towards six in the afternoon. We took this lonely lane and that through the woods, and an hour later pulled up in a vacant space near a body of water beside a large, unpainted, barnish building. My driver got out, talked with several other women, then ...

SSE Talks - Faster-than-light Space Travel? - Richard Amoroso
www.scientificexploration.org ----------------------------------- Skeptics say it may take 1000 years and require an energy source the size of Jupiter to operate superluminal or faster than light (FTL) warpdrives. The Alcubierre warp drive metric (considered most advanced); as derived from Einstein's field equations, Ruv - (guvR) + guv? = (8pG/c4)Tuv, or in general form: Utilizing advanced principles inherent in a Holographic Anthropic Multiverse (HAM), radical improvements to the Alcubierre warp drive model occur that could lead to FTL travel with existing technological prowess. Based on a radical extension of the Holographic Principle assuming a form of 'Heisenberg Potentia' inherent in an HD absolute space, simplistically the drive mechanism is a holographic figure-ground effect. The local spaceship (figure) is removed (put in free-fall relative to the background) from the infinite potentia. Then through manipulation of a 12D complex form of a covariant Dirac polarized vacuum (string theoretic) the external domain wall or interstice between the ships warp bubble and the Alcubierre metric becomes a coherently controlled stochastic barrier of leapfroging mini-wormholes key to the drives operation: 1) Shield (ship bubble) constructed from inherent infinite vacuum energy by coherently controlled constructive interference of continuous-state 12D brane mirror symmetry resonance modes of the HAM close-packed cosmological least-unit backcloth structure. 2) The Alcubierre ...

2011 edelman lecture: derrick jensen

2011 Edelman Lecture: Derrick Jensen
Environmental Activist Derrick Jensen gives the 2011 Edelman Lecture, "Civilization and Resistance." March 9, 2011, Pacific Northwest College of Art. A podcast of the complete lecture is available at: untitled.pnca.edu Derrick Jensen is the acclaimed author of fifteen books, including A Language Older Than Words, The Culture of Make Believe, and Endgame. Author, teacher, activist, small farmer and leading voice of uncompromising dissent, he has been hailed as the philosopher poet of the environmental movement. His premise is as profound as it is persistent: industrial civilization is inherently unsustainable. It will always require violence to biotic and human communities. And it will create a culture where trauma is normalized, where living beings become objects, and where the only relationship left is one of domination. He has packed university auditoriums, conferences, and bookstores across the nation, stirring them with revolutionary spirit. Derrick Jensen asks, "Do you believe this culture will undergo a voluntary transformation to a sane and sustainable way of living? If you don't, and you care about life on this planet, what does that mean for your strategy and tactics? The answer is that we don't know because we don't talk about it." Derrick talks about it. Weaving together history, philosophy, environmentalism, economics, literature and psychology to produce a powerful argument and a passionate call for action, he points toward concrete solutions by focusing on ...

Interactive Lecture Series by OJO, Part 1 | Fire Lecture | Engagement Party at MOCA
For the final event of their three-month Engagement Party residency, OJO, along with special guests as well as members of the audience, created an abnormal lecture experience. "Interactive Lecture Series" took place at MOCA Grand Avenue in the Ahmanson Auditorium on Thursday, August 6, 2009.. This performance consisted of a series of lectures, each of which acted as a musical score, with the speaker, audience, space, and environment functioning as compositional elements. As talks are presented on various topics, members of OJO took up positions beside the lectern as the house band, using audio trickery to affect the audiences reception of live speech. Focusing on specific words and phrases in order to induce listeners to react in all sorts of ways, their interventions lead to chaotic and memorable lectures. Video by Peter West.

"science and the taboo of psi" with dean radin

Google Tech Talks January, 16 2008 ABSTRACT Do telepathy, clairvoyance and other "psi" abilities exist? The majority of the general population believes that they do, and yet fewer than one percent of mainstream academic institutions have any faculty known for their interest in these frequently reported experiences. Why is a topic of enduring and widespread interest met with such resounding silence in academia? The answer is not due to a lack of scientific evidence, or even to a lack of scientific interest, but rather involves a taboo. I will discuss the nature of this taboo, some of the empirical evidence and critical responses, and speculate on the implications. Speaker: Dean Radin Dean Radin is a researcher and author in the field of parapsychology. He is Senior Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and four-time former President of the Parapsychological Association. He holds an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a masters degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has worked at AT&T Bell Labs and GTE Labs, mainly on human factors of advanced telecommunications products and services, and held appointments at Princeton University, Edinburgh University, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, SRI International, Interval Research Corporation, and Boundary Institute. At these facilities he was engaged in basic research on ...

Billions of Entrepreneurs: How China and India are Reshaping Their Futures an...
Google Tech Talks March 12, 2009 ABSTRACT "Billions of Entrepreneurs: How China and India are Reshaping Their Futures and Yours" Removing half a billion people from poverty and into the productive workforce will profoundly affect on the world economy. India and China are doing just that with insane growth rates and lots of what used to be American jobs: China is the factory floor and India the back-office, software shop. China is top-down party driven. India is a messy, vibrant democracy. This may be the complementary duo that changes the world. Including your world. Come hear Professor Tarun Khanna in a discussion about his book, Billions of Entrepreneurs: How China and India are Reshaping Their Futures and Yours. Called well worth reading by The Economist and entertaining by the Financial Times, Khanna's book shows how Chinese and Indian entrepreneurs are creating change through new business models. Speaker: Tarun Khanna Tarun Khanna is the Jorge Paulo Lemann Professor at the Harvard Business School, where he has studied and worked with multinational and indigenous companies and investors in emerging markets worldwide. He joined the faculty in 1993, after obtaining an engineering degree from Princeton University (1988) and a Ph.D. from Harvard (1993), and an interim stint on Wall Street. During this time, he has served as the head of several courses on strategy and international business targeted to MBA students and senior executives at Harvard. His new book, Billions ...

Earthquakes and archeology - amos nur (seti talks)

Earthquakes and Archeology - Amos Nur (SETI Talks)
SETI Talks Archive: seti.org 'Earthquakes and Archaeology' is an emerging field with impact on both earthquake science and archaeological and historical studies. It has been controversial as archaeologists and historians have traditionally rejected earthquakes as an important agent. But now with the advent of plate tectonics and modern instrumentation, this controversy is subsiding as we begin to offer answers to some key questions in both disciplines: Some Significant Geophysics Questions: 1. Time/space pre-instrumental patterns of large earthquakes. 2. Maximum earthquake magnitude, maximum rupture length, etc. 3. One big event or several smaller ones? Some Significant Archaeological Questions: 1. Why so many ruins? 2. Why so many layers/levels of destruction? [Knossos-10, Jericho-22, Armageddon-30, Troy-45]. 3. Who buried the Dead Sea Scrolls? 4. The nature of regional destructions and system collapse. A specific example Professor Nur will focus on is the catastrophic end of the bronze age @1200BC.

Professor stephen hawking "why we should go into space"

Professor Stephen Hawking
Professor Stephen Hawking's Speech "Why We Should Go Into Space" streamed into Second Life and NASA TV on April 21, 2008 www.nasa.gov For the creation of this video I have taken some of my favorite parts of his lecture and combined them with video I recorded live in Second Life during the event for the benefit of NASA Space CoLab. I've added music with permission of Voicedude Reinoir to help convey the emotion I feel as Professor Hawking speaks. I also interlaced some scenes from Second Life locations that went along with his words. Scenes include shots from NASA CoLab Island, The Scilands (National Space Society, International Spaceflight Museum, and Elon University islands), All Machinima shot and edited by Me Earth Primbee. Music used with permission of copyright holder. C-span recorded the whole lecture as well you can view it along with Lucy Hawking's wonderful lecture on Science Education here: mfile.akamai.com For more information on Stephen Hawking www.hawking.org.uk For more information on NASA's 50th Anniversary www.nasa.gov For a link to the Scilands blog to learn more about this budding science community in Second Life www.scilands.org

John grunsfeld - hubble servicing mission 4

John Grunsfeld - Hubble Servicing Mission 4
In May 2009 a team of astronauts flew to the Hubble Space Telescope on space shuttle Atlantis. On their 13 day mission and over the course of 5 spacewalks they completed an extreme makeover of the orbiting observatory. They installed the Wide Field Camera- 3, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, repaired the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, as well as a number of maintenance activities. The Hubble Space Telescope story has been a fascinating study in public policy, engineering, ethics, and science. For the first time on orbit the Hubble has a full complement of instruments capable of performing state-of-the-art observations from the near infra-red to the ultraviolet end of the spectrum. The early results of the new and repaired instruments hint at a bright scientific future for Hubble and will be presented in the talk as well as a narrative of the adventures on orbit. Dr. John M. Grunsfeld was recently appointed Deputy Director of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). A veteran of five space flights, including three missions to service the Hubble Space Telescope - STS-103 in Dec. 1999, STS-109 in March 2002, and STS-125 in May 2009 - Grunsfeld has logged over 835 hours in space, including nearly 60 hours of Extravehicular Activity during eight space walks. He served as the NASA Chief Scientist detailed to NASA Headquarters in 2003-2004, where he helped develop the President's Vision for Space Exploration. Dr. Grunsfeld ...
