What is the self?

What is the Self?
Join the exploration: www.scienceandnonduality.com SAND Europe - 29th May - 3rd June, 2012, Doorn, The Netherlands SAND USA - Oct 24th-28th, 2012, San Rafael, CA Mystics in all ages and cultures describe the self as infinite, stable and ever-present phenomena. Modern physics describe the world as a self-moving, self-designing pattern, an undivided wholeness, a dance. We, as a society, relate to the self mostly as an individual, unique, time bound form. Our common sense, as individuals and society, hasn't caught up with this picture and it still based on long-held biases and stories. The Earth is clearly round but we still act as if it was flat... We live at the dawn of a scientific revolution, every day brings new findings from a wide range of scientific disciplines about what it means to be human. Modern science now gives us the detailed descriptions of the mechanisms our brain needs to construct what we call the self. Could it be this illusionary image of ourselves as separate beings that is keeping us in this perpetual state of anxiety, scarcity, fear, dissatisfaction and leading us, as a society, at this very delicate point in evolution? Self Esteem - The Offspring
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la I wrote her off for the tenth time today And practiced all the things I would say But she came over, I lost my nerve I took her back and made her dessert Now I know I'm being used That's okay, man, cause I like the abuse Now I know she's playing with me That's ok cause I got no self esteem Oh, yeah, yeah Oh, yeah, yeah Oh, yeah, yeah Oh, yeah, yeah We make plans to go out at night I wait till two then I turn out the light This rejections got me so low If she keeps it up I just might tell her so Oh, yeah, yeah Oh, yeah, yeah Oh, yeah, yeah Oh, yeah, yeah When she's saying that she wants only me Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends When she's saying that I'm like a disease Then I wonder how much more I can stand Well I guess, I should stick up for myself But I really think it's better this way The more you suffer, the more it shows you really care Right? Yeah! Now I'll relate this a little bit That happens more than I'd like to admit Late at night she knocks on my door She's drunk again and looking to score Now I know I should say no But it's kind of hard when she's ready to go I may be dumb, but I'm not a dweeb I'm just a sucker with no self esteem Oh, yeah, yeah Oh, yeah, yeah Oh, yeah, yeah Oh, yeah, yeah When she's saying that she wants only me Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends When she's saying that I'm like a disease Then I wonder how much more I can stand Well I guess, I should stick up for myself But I really think ...

Michael gazzaniga - the interpreter

Michael Gazzaniga - The Interpreter
The third in a series of Gifford Lectures by Professor Michael Gazzaniga. Recorded 15 October, 2009 at the Playfair Library Hall, the University of Edinburgh. The interpreter is the device we humans enjoy that provides us with the capacity to see the meanings behind patterns of our emotions, behavior and thoughts. This concept is central to understanding the relationship between our brain and our strong sense of self. In a way, it is the device that liberates us from our automatic ways spelled out in Lecture 1 and 2. The interpreter constructs the sense that there is a me arising out of the ongoing neuronal chatter in the brain and making all of lifes moment-to-moment decisions. Our compelling sense of being a unified self armed with volition, deployable attention and self-control is the handiwork of the interpreter, for it brings coherence to a brain that is actually a vastly parallel and distributed system. This view stands in contrast to much neuroscientific theorizing or existential musing about our unified, coherent nature. In most models of brain and cognitive mechanism, one can identify, as Marvin Minsky once said, the box that makes all the decisions.

Alan watts ~ who are you?

Alan Watts ~ Who Are You?
So what I think we could aim for in the way of human civilization and culture would be a system in which we are all highly aware of our existing interconnection and unity with the whole domain of nature, and therefore do not have to go to all sorts of wild extremes to find that union. In other words, look at the number of people we know who are terrified of silence, and who have to have something going all the time, some noise streaming into their ears. They're doing that because of their intense sense of loneliness. And so when they feel silent, they feel lonely and they want to escape from it. Or people who just want to get together. As we say, they want to escape from themselves. More people spend more time running away from themselves. Isn't that wretched? What a definition. What an experience of self if it's something you've always got to be running away from and forgetting. Say you read a mystery story. Why? So you forget yourself. You join a religion. Why? To forget yourself. You get absorbed in a political movement. Why? To forget yourself. Well it must be a pretty miserable kind of self if you have to forget it like that. Now for a person who doesn't have an isolated sense of self, he has no need to run away from it, because he knows. Alan Watts

Tedxhouston - brené brown

TEDxHouston - Brené Brown
Dr. Brené Brown is a researcher professor at the University of Houston, Graduate College of Social Work, where she has spent the past ten years studying a concept that she calls Wholeheartedness, posing the questions: How do we engage in our lives from a place of authenticity and worthiness? How do we cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection that we need to embrace our imperfections and to recognize that we are enough -- that we are worthy of love, belonging and joy? Brené is the author of I Thought It Was Just Me (but it isn't): Telling the Truth About Perfectionism, Inadequacy, and Power (2007) and the forthcoming books, The Gifts of Imperfection (2010) and Wholehearted: Spiritual Adventures in Falling Apart, Growing Up, and Finding Joy ( 2011). About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

Why i hate religion, but love jesus || spoken word

Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus || Spoken Word
A poem I wrote to highlight the difference between Jesus and false religion. In the scriptures Jesus received the most opposition from the most religious people of his day. At it's core Jesus' gospel and the good news of the Cross is in pure opposition to self-righteousness/self-justification. Religion is man centered, Jesus is God-centered. This poem highlights my journey to discover this truth. Religion either ends in pride or despair. Pride because you make a list and can do it and act better than everyone, or despair because you can't do your own list of rules and feel "not good enough" for God. With Jesus though you have humble confident joy because He represents you, you don't represent yourself and His sacrifice is perfect putting us in perfect standing with God the Father. Wanna support a good cause and also wear something that sparks conversation? Peep the Jesus is greater than religion shirts. Dr. mark hyman: don't treat disease, create health

Dr. Mark Hyman: Don't Treat Disease, Create Health
bigthink.com Dr. Mark Hyman says that self-care is the key to being a healthy human today. In fact, he says, eighty percent of health conditions can be solved without a physician. The health care system puts band aids on the symptoms and doesn't deal with the causes. "Don't treat disease," Hyman says. "Create health." You can do this by taking care of yourself and solving your own health issues. You're smarter than the healthcare system thinks you can be. Directed / Produced by Elizabeth Rodd and Jonathan Fowler Transcript: The health care system we have is very top heavy. It's doctor- and hospital-centric instead of patient- and community-centered. And we've basically led people to believe that their health has to be in the hands of the health care system, that they don't have the power to control their health, to regulate their health, to create health. And I think it's very important for us to realize that we can do that, and we can not have to wait for the health care system to solve our health care problems. I'm a firm believer in do-it-yourself health, that self-care is where this all starts, and that 80 percent of health conditions can be solved without a physician. In fact, those patients who are going to physicians to solve those problems are not getting results -- people with migraines and irritable bowel and reflux and obesity and diabetes and high blood pressure. They're getting medications that are band-aids on the symptoms but not really dealing with the ...

euronews interview - Farhadi - self-censorship 'real danger' for Iranian filmmakers
www.euronews.com At the 65th Cannes Festival, Iranian film director Asghar Farhadi was, once again, the centre of attention, this time for his next film project. The European Commission has selected Farhadi's next movie for its 60000 euro 'Prix MEDIA' award. The film is due to be set in Paris with European casting. Earlier this year, Farhadi's 'Separation' won two Oscar nominations and took the award for Best Foreign Language film, the first Iranian movie to win the honour. In an interview with euronews in Cannes, Asghar Farhadi talks about his next project, the reaction in Iran, his cinematic style and the current restraints on Iranian film-makers. *euronews:* "You've just won the "Prix MEDIA" a European award which recognises cultural diversity, what does this award mean for you as an Iranian Film maker?" *Asghar Farhadi:* "The meaning it has for me is the same as all the encouragement I have received through these years. The other meaning is that I'm a writer who has always composed in the Persian language and whose dialogues have always been in the Persian language. Now some of the cast will be speaking another language. Finally, it means that those who have read the script for my next film have been able to connect with it and did not find it an unfamiliar story despite not knowing Persian, and that means a lot to me." *euronews:* "You won many international awards for your last movie 'A Separation' amongst them an Oscar for best foreign language movie - but ...

Guided meditation with eckhart tolle

Guided Meditation with Eckhart Tolle
A guided meditation on the nature of awareness (aliveness) with Eckhart Tolle. "True freedom and the end of suffering is living in such a way as if you had completely chosen whatever you feel or experience at this moment. The inner alignment with Now is the end of suffering." "Most people confuse the Now with what happens in the Now, but that's not what it is. The Now is deeper than what happens in it. It is the space in which it happens. So do not confuse the content of this moment with the Now. The Now is deeper than any content in it." "Thoughts, emotions, sense perceptions, and whatever you experience make up the content of your life. "My Life" is what you derive your sense of self from, and "my life" is content, or so you believe." "Many expressions that are in common usage, and sometimes the structure of language itself, reveal the fact that people don't know who they are. You say: "He lost his life" or "my life," as if life were something that you can possess or lose. The truth is: you don't have a life, you are life. The One Life, the one consciousness that pervades the entire universe and takes temporary form to experience itself as a stone or blade of grass, as an animal, a person, a star or a galaxy. Can you sense deep within that you already know that? Can you sense that you already are That?" "I cannot tell you any spiritual truth that deep within you don't know already. All I can do is remind you of what you have forgotten" "Look at a tree, a flower, a plant ...

Elizabeth taylor - a few words -by richard bassett

Elizabeth Taylor - A Few Words -by Richard Bassett
I have included some memorable interview clips with Dame Elizabeth Taylor as a guest from the period of circa 1986 through 2006. Please enjoy this series of short interviews as Elizabeth searches her soul and touches upon her personal history, her self image and self esteem, her loved ones and family and always AIDS. She reviews her own personal timeline regarding her battles with AIDS Fundraising and making certain that important people listened. There is a shy quality that we see, far from the zealous characters she has portrayed onscreen. Elizabeth Taylor talks openly and honestly in detailing some of the difficulties that she has survived in life. She is a true survivor in every sense of the word. Upon watching these clips myself, I fell in love with her all over again. She definitely leaves her ego at the front door as she approaches some deep subject matter all in an effort to allow us to know and understand the real Elizabeth Taylor, and not the Elizabeth Taylor we read about in the tabloids. Her honest is refreshing and it suits her so well. Again, enjoy the upcoming, "A Few Words" clips. In these few clips we hear about Elizabeth talking about her remarkable transition she made from 1979 until 1984, the weight that she lost and the discipline that it took. She touches upon her early film roles, as well as speaking about one of the loves of her life: Mike Todd. In viewing these short film clips, please donate to the cause that has become Dame Elizabeth Taylor's ...

Now is time to fly

NOW is TIME to FLY
My Facebook = www.facebook.com My mind is a hard drive and CPU that stores and processes my version of the world. How I define my self reflects the MATTER in my physical reality. What I say about "others" is like looking in a mirror and judging my reflection. When I look in my mirror everything I see looks beautiful and perfect, and this perception is reflected in my physical experience. What I see is what I get (WISIWIG), my life is a holographic reflection of my mind, and I am the perfect reflection of perfection. Reality is my five sense physical experience limitation reflecting physical MATTER in my NOW, and my imagination is infinite, timeless, in-formation in darkness that does not reflect MATTER until I experience it in my NOW. Experience is matter, and knowledge is fantasy. To learn is to teach myself limitations. Anything I learn about my world and accept as truth is my limitation. My life is a pyramid that stands up with energy, at the highest point I am there by my self with a reflection of other persons/things physically around me. The further down my pyramid I think about is the more opposite of my self at the top. Above my beating heart is my upper world, and below is my underworld, so my stomach intestine is the brain tissue of my underworld. My physical experience is my truth, and everything else is just a story, without me, nothing can exist... so nothing does exist without me, and with me everything is. Having a plan is being afraid to succeed. The best ...
