The norms of death: capital punishment in china

The norms of death: Capital punishment in China
The death penalty is employed for a wide variety of crimes in China, and the country today executes more people than the rest of the world combined. Public opinion surveys from the 1990s showed near total support for its use. Some claim such opinions are deeply rooted in 'Chinese culture'. However, in this lecture the presenter will claim that this represents a misconception of Chinese culture and that capital punishment has more to do with politics. Opinions in China regarding the death penalty have changed dramatically over the last decade as they have in the rest of the world. Dr Borge Bakken is Director of the Criminology Masters Programme at the Department of Sociology, the University of Hong Kong. He has written extensively on crime, control, deviance and cultural norms in China. Among his books are The Exemplary Society: Human Improvement, Social Control, and the Dangers of Modernity in China (Oxford University Press, 2000) and Crime, Punishment and Policing in China (Rowman & Littlefield, 2007). He is currently working on a book on punitive norms with the working title The Punitive Society. Recorded on Wednesday, 1 December 2010.

Rhyme and punishment - official trailer

RHYME AND PUNISHMENT - Official Trailer
The gritty elements of urban crime and violence have always had an influence on hip hop culture and rap music. More and more, the trappings of street life have landed popular rap artists behind bars and not just for a music video shoot. What happens when a rapper who has everything suddenly has his freedom stripped away and is forced to deal with the harsh realities of prison? Rhyme and Punishment takes an in-depth look at the role of prison in hip hop culture, and reveals the side of the story that is not being covered by the news and popular media. The true and personal stories of hip hop artists who are, have been, or are soon to be incarcerated, in their own words. Featuring intimate and compelling interviews with convicted rappers Beanie Sigel, Prodigy, Cassidy, Project Pat, Immortal Technique, Slick Rick and many more. These artists who were at the top of their game when they got locked up explain the details of the crimes that led to their arrests, and document their struggles to deal with the shocking brutality of incarcerated life. What happens to the music when the expensive bling and celebrity status get traded for an orange jumpsuit and an inmate identification number? Rhyme and Punishment explores the bitter journey from the streets to the studio to the cell block.

PUNISHMENT: A FAILED SOCIAL EXPERIMENT [Part 3 of 8]
PUNISHMENT: A FAILED SOCIAL EXPERIMENT [Part 3 of 8] Subtitles are available newfuturemedia.net Original interviews with: DR. DAVID SCOTT, Criminologist, University of Central Lancashire PROFESSOR JOE SIM, Professor in Criminology, Liverpool John Moores University DR. BOB JOHNSON, Prison Psychiatrist, Special Unit in HMP Parkhurst Prison JOE BLACK, Prison Campaigner, Campaign Against Prison Slavery SYNOPSIS: Punishment: A Failed Social Experiment provides a detailed, critical analysis of the current legal and justice system generally in operation across the planet whilst also providing potential solutions which work on preventing crime and creating a much more socially sustainable society. The documentary film consists of interviews with various individuals; all of whom provide information on where we are going wrong when we treat offenders, and what we could head towards in regards to the solutions available. It must be recognised that in order for change to occur in the system of punishment and 'justice', wider societal and cultural issues need to be addressed, as this documentary film recognises that there are inherent flaws in our current social system. Although most sources of information originate from the United Kingdom, it is reasonable to state that the topics examined will apply to many other nations. Punishment: A Failed Social Experiment is an independent film production and will be released online for free download and distribution.

Punishment or reward: which works better on behavior?

Punishment or Reward: Which Works Better on Behavior?
This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com Two recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behavior. One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study. They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner's Dilemma. The game is based on the tension between the interests of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players, at a cost to the punisher. Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded it the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings. The group with the most punishment earned twenty-five percent less than the group with the least punishment. The study appeared in September in the journal Science. The other study involved children. It was presented in September in California at a conference on violence and abuse. Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children were ages two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven ...

Crime and punishment - john simm (am ia suspect?!)

Crime and Punishment - John Simm (Am IA Suspect?!)
This acclaimed BBC adaptation of Crime and Punishment remains faithful to Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic novel. Set in St Petersburg in the second half of the 19th century, the psychological thriller tells of a desperate young murderer caught in a web of his own guilt. Rodya Raskolnikov (John Simm) is a poverty-stricken student living among the fetid alleyways and crumbling tenements of St Petersburg. Intense and highly intelligent, Raskolnikov believes he is among a class of men destined for greatness and as such is permitted to breach 'normal' moral values. He decides to test his courage and integrity by killing a pawnbroker, a mean old woman whom he is sure nobody will miss. The murder, however, only serves to draw Raskolnikov into a nightmare world in which he is dogged by guilt, paranoia and alienation. Faced with the wily investigator Porfiry, who sets up a complex series of traps, encounters and onversations, can Raskolnikov escape his own conscience or the seemingly inevitable punishment? Simm's Raskolnikov is a "truly startling, genuinely mature performance" --The Guardian RTS awards (2002), winner: Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Tape and Film Editing. Tony robinson's crime and punishment

Tony Robinson's Crime and Punishment
Available on DVD through www.digitalclassicsdvd.co.uk and all major retailers. Tony Robinson goes on a fascinating and sometimes bizarre journey to discover the origins of our laws and what we do to people when they break them. From trials by boiling water, through the decapitation of a king, to the emergence of modern democracy, it is a journey that starts two thousand years ago and remains unfinished today. We find out how the Normans created the first surveillance society, how today's compensation culture was started by the Anglo Saxons and how a man whose body was kept in a London cupboard inspired us to stop stringing people up and start locking them up instead. Throughout his historical journey, Tony plays the part of the accused, judge, jury and executioner and discovers the often strange circumstances from which the main tenets of modern English law emerged.

The genocide of a culture

The Genocide of a Culture
This video presents exerpts from the letters and diaries of Jesuit missionaries in Canada during the early 17th century. The Jesuit conversion program focused on teaching the Natives the importance and sanctity of hierarchy, womens subjugation and the corporeal punishment of children, to put each other in prison and publicly persecute each other. I made this movie to illustrate an example of how hierarchy, oppression and abuse is NOT a natural state in human beings, but rather a result of what we have been taught, and that these teachings historically have been carefully planned and organized by powerful institutions. The photos of indigenous people are random and obviously younger than the texts presented here. However, the drawings and prints of Jesuit missionaries in Canada certainly illustrate and derive from the time we are referring to here.

Discovering religion: ep 16 - embryonic stem cells & capital punishment

Discovering Religion: Ep 16 - Embryonic Stem Cells & Capital Punishment
The sixteenth installment of my original series, "Discovering Religion". In this episode I discuss the current actions of Christian Americans to suppress modern-day scientific advancements. In particular, I address the movement by Christians to outlaw embryonic stem cell, a stance they have no justification from the Bible in taking -- a situation that very closely parallels the Church's suppression of Roger Bacon and Galileo Galilei's scientific discoveries. Additional information I could not include in the video: Diabetes: Giving insulin to children with Type I Diabetes is a viable means of treating this disease, however; after 15-20 years of living with type I diabetes, the danger continues to grow, possibly leading to kidney failure, heart disease, blindness, brain damage, and premature death. This is why stem cell research is so crucial to patients suffering from this serious condition. Bone Marrow Transplants: There are many patients, both child and adult, in need of bone marrow transplants that would greatly benefit from the use of stem cells. For 2/3 of them, there is no donor with an acceptable genetic match. However, even when a match is found, it is never perfect. With stem cells, doctors could grow cells customized to the needs of the patient. On a personal note, a good friend of mine mentioned that his best friend in high school needed a marrow transplant. Each one of his friends volunteered for the test to see if they were compatible; however, an acceptable ...

Javed: Curse of Safarish Culture
Javed Chaudhry - host of Kal Tak program in Pakistan - makes an impassioned plea to rid the country of its entrenched and despicable "safarish" culture. He argues that "safarish" is the "mother of all evils" in society and is significantly more serious than corruption and injustice in its pernicious effects. He criticizes recent governmental initiatives for curbing "safarish" as grossly insufficient and advocates a complete ban on its use and strict punishment for offenders. Drug abuse in american society: socio-cultural documentary - drugs in our culture (1/2) (1970)

Drug Abuse in American Society: Socio-Cultural Documentary - Drugs in Our Culture (1/2) (1970)
1970 www.amazon.com Watch the full film: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Drug subcultures are examples of countercultures, primarily defined by recreational drug use. Drug subcultures are groups of people united by a common understanding of the meaning and value (good or otherwise) of the incorporation into life of the drug in question. Such unity can take many forms, from friends who take the drug together, possibly obeying certain rules of etiquette, to full-scale political movements for the reform of drug laws. The sum of these parts can be considered an individual drug's "culture". There are multiple drug subcultures based on the use of different drugs — the culture surrounding cannabis, for example, is very different from that of heroin, due to the different sort of experiences, sentiment amongst the crowd attracted to the drug in question, as well as the problems the users encounter. Drugs also play an important role in various other subcultures, such as reggae and hip hop music, Rastafari, hippie movements, drug dealing, as well as rave culture. Many artists, especially in 20th century and since then, used various drugs and explored their influence on human life in general and particularly on the creative process. Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas employs drug use as a major theme and provides a critique of the drug culture of the 1970s.
