News: nomination day for singapore's presidential election - 17aug2011

SINGAPORE: Singaporeans will go to the polls to elect a new President on August 27. It will be a four-cornered fight between medical doctor Tan Cheng Bock, investment adviser Tan Jee Say, and directors Tony Tan and Tan Kin Lian. They were confirmed on Wednesday as candidates in the Presidential race after no objections were raised at the close of nominations. Returning Officer Yam Ah Mee officially announced the list of candidates for the presidential race at about 12.45pm. All the candidates then gave a short speech to thank their supporters. Dr Tan Cheng Bock, 71, said he wants the office of President to be a place for Singaporeans to unite and to promote multi-racialism in the country. Mr Tan Jee Say, 57, said the primary purpose of the Elected President is to provide checks and balances. Dr Tony Tan, 71, said the Presidential Election is different from the General Election and that the President must be above politics. Mr Tan Kin Lian, 63, said his campaign slogan is to be the "Voice of the People" and urged Singaporeans to support him. The candidates are now expected to go full swing into their nine-day campaign period. Each candidate will be allowed to hold one outdoor rally at designated sites approved by the police. The first Presidential Candidate Broadcast will be held on Thursday from 8pm to 11.30pm across various free-to-air radio and television platforms. This came after weeks of being pressured to do so by the public and stating that he would need a sign. Although the legitimacy of his campaign was questioned, he maintained that he was serious. Colbert had originally planned to run for both the Republican and the Democratic nomination in his home state of South Carolina. After learning that the fee to file for the Republican primary was $35000, he abandoned plans to run as a Republican (he had previously stated that he could avoid FEC rules if he stayed under $5000 in campaign expenditure). Although he paid the $2500 fee to be included in the South Carolina Democratic ballot, he was denied a place on the ballot by the South Carolina Democratic Party executive council. On November 5, 2007, Colbert officially dropped his Presidential bid. Colbert had planned to appear at the College of Charleston on October 27, but was unable to make the event due to a scheduling conflict. The winner of the 2012 US presidential election must be prepared for "a significant potential for near-term crisis" between India and its historical rival Pakistan, says CFR's Daniel Markey. The United States would likely be called upon to play an important mediating role in the event of a "Mumbai-type" terrorist event that would lead India and Pakistan to the brink of war, he says. Bashir Abdulfattah, editor of Democracy Journal, believes the Muslim Brotherhood, which already dominates parliament, no longer expects to win the presidential vote. "The Muslim Brotherhood understand that Omar Suleyman is likely to win the elections. In this situation the only opportunity left is to make Khairat El-Shater prime minister.
