Innovation in rockwork and themed construction

A recognized leader in specialty themed construction and rockwork, KHS&S continues to innovate new ways to build complex structures more efficiently and with higher quality. Utilizing digital technology, KHS&S has now developed a proprietary, lean manufacturing process that allows us to replicate any organically shaped structure using prefabricated panels. The result is higher precision and greater control. And, since the process uses BIM, project data can be easily transported or reused for replication and analysis. A blower door is a diagnostic tool designed to measure the airtightness of buildings. and to help locate air leakage sites. A blower door consists of a calibrated fan for measuring an airflow rate, and a pressure-sensing device to measure the air pressure created by the fan flow. The combination of pressure and fan-flow measurements are used to determine the building airtightness. The airtightness of a building is useful knowledge when trying to increase energy conservation or decrease indoor air pollution, or control building pressures. How to build a house in a day

This is a wood framing technology, originally from Japan, that I led the effort to transfer to the USA. Essentially a small group of untrained people can erect an entire house frame in 1-3 days, depending on the size of the structure. The system is precut 100% by CAD/CAM--see that process here: uk.youtube.com Uses engineered wood and wastewood (glulams, LSL) and is very resource and energy efficient. It can also be much more energy efficient than stick framing using innovative insulated panels similar to SIPs. The framing costs, with full custom precut are about double that of pile of 2x6's and nails--Built in a couple of days, without any skilled labor means the final erected cost is about 20-30% less than stick framing. For those who might be worried about stability, Japan has 3 seismic occurrences per day and this system meets all japanese earthquake and typhoon standards. -James Scott Brew

IDEAbuilder is a company focused on robotic fabrication of homes and building components. According to Greg from IDEAbuilder, the majority of wood homes in Europe are manufactured using robotic fabrication. IDEAbuilder is focused on bringing this technology, already popular in Europe, to the United States. The concept is still relatively new to most architects and builders, and IDEAbuilder is working to educate them about this process. So why use robotic fabrication in building? It's a more energy efficient and organized way to build, and it therefore makes homes more affordable and raises their quality level. So from an architect's perspective how is this different from standard construction? In robotic fabrication, a 3D digital model of the home is built and then sent to the robotic fabrication lines. In standard construction, the architect only needs to design the house in a CAD program, and it does not need to be 3D. The robotic fabrication machines can produce any kind of home or building component, and the elements they produce for any given project are based on that particular project's design and location. The goal is to have as much of the building process diverted from the building site as possible. "More with less" The philosophy of the team and the proposal is to focus on those strategies that achieve the maximum architectural and environmental quality while simplifying, reducing or reinvesting costs with the aim to make the habitation and the management of the building more viable, comfortable and profitable. The new university housing is located on the same block as the School of Architecture of Vallès. The project aims to adapt to the low density of the urban surroundings, prioritizing the direct relationship of the housing with the campus, with a low building, PB+1; adapting, without elevators, with a central community patio, in order to promote students' relationship with nature. The residential program for architecture students makes it possible to imagine intensified coexistence between the users, both individually, thanks to the interior flexibility of the housing units, and collectively, thanks to the potential uses of the 1000m² atrium as a space for social events and an intermediate bioclimatic space that allow the improvement of the energetic efficiency of the building. The project is designed as an industrialized construction through the use of only one typology of prefabricated housing made of concrete without an internal distribution and with the minimum number of fixed elements, which guarantees habitability, by simplifying finishings in order to invest in energy efficiency.
