I think one of the ...
I think one of the most important point that make the "end of time" so appealing to them is that it would appease the religious people doubts. It would be the confirmation that a God really exist they always wanted (consciously or unconsciously). They want to look like their faith is strong because they have been told it is a virtue but deep down inside they doubt. That would also explain why they are as sad as the atheist when their loved one die even if they say "they are in a better place".
