Just Glue Some Gears On It (And Call It Steampunk)

Knowing who Jamie ...
Knowing who Jamie Hyneman is legally entitles him to call people a retard? Wat? Your grammar is retarded, I'm legally entitled to call you that because fuck you that's why.

"It" (I'm assuming that you mean freedom of speech) might legally entitle him to do so, but human decency dictates otherwise.

Chill out, man. ...
Chill out, man. Just because not everybody cares about Mythbusters doesn't mean you can go around calling them all retards. That just makes you a jerk.
thatwhichisgiven on 2012-05-23
True, the other guy ...
True, the other guy had no right to call you "full retard" just for not knowing who somebody is, but how on earth can you say that Jamie Hyneman is "terrible" when you don't even know who he is? THAT is what makes you ignorant here.

THis video is one ...
THis video is one of the coolest I've seen for a rather long time. My deepest respect for the song, the pics and the work!

Let me add, though, that the Nixie thing is my only nitpick.

They're also * ...
They're also *predictable* from Victorian-era tech. Gas discharge tubes were already known (even if all of the various gases used in the 20th Century weren't yet), and the idea of layered elements lit to visibility one at a time comes straight from the diorama (unlike, say, segmented or dot-matrix displays). They're more probable than not, so I'd say they're fair game—if the late Victorians had a use for them, they'd have made them.

gotta love the look ...
gotta love the look of steampunk, but unfortunately i'm money less and not creative enough to make something that awesome! i'm never just sticking gears on it!

A delayed piece of ...
A delayed piece of steampunk art will eventually be good, one where you spend five minutes gluing gears on it will never be good, so spend time on it.

Having an opinion ...
Having an opinion that differs from yours does not make me ignorant, not understanding and misusing the word ignorant does make you ignorant though.

I found this ...
I found this amusing, but preachy and negative. The song writer has a great sense of what he would like the subculture of Steampunk to be, and is hoping to change it by making fun of it. He's not alone in this, but I can't help but think of all the excited new Steampunk fans he's offended by making fun of their early endeavors. Many of the greatest Steampunk craftsman started lay glueing gears, and eventually became the amazing talents we have today.

Great video but I ...
Great video but I have yet to see a Steampunk lady in an accurate replica "Victorian" dress because those cost several thousands and for true authenticity would necessitate the wearing of replica Victorian underwear. Also Victoria was on the throne a long time so fashions changed considerably. I like the extra gears placed on items as long as it looks well done. But what do I know - I'm just a Goth! ;0)

I have been known ...
I have been known to wear two pairs of goggles at once indoors, or in the workshop. One are welding lenses, the other have a jeweller's lens attached for fine detail that can fit over the top to allow magnification for delicate work. The non-functioning goggles however irritate me, as even my all metal lens kind are usable (they're for airsofting).

Yes, that's what I ...
Yes, that's what I thought. I can imagine Victorian culture clothes evolving in a retro-future way. But I can hardly imagine the fashion turning into half naked women wearing goggles. I like gears on machines that have a practical use. But nobody would invent a machine with gears that just stick out for it to look "attractive". I think functional, as you say, is the keyword. With a touch of class.
TheLemonVampire on 2012-05-06
well, what really ...
well, what really is the problem is that steam punk was never really supposed to be a fashion. The idea behind steam punk is implementing Victorian culture with science fiction technologies (i.e nothing that exists irl). So like gears might be appropriate on say a time travel device or a flying vehicle, but not on clothing. To truly "dress" steam punk is to dress era appropriate,(unless there is some sort of space traveling suit or something functional in a steam punk universe).
