'The Hobbit', Audio Book- Part II of III
This is J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'. A classic on so many levels methinks^_^ This reading of the book by Nicol Williamson is an abridged version, meaning of course that it is not the entire book word for word. Anywho, I put some pictures in with the vid, though they're not in sync with the story. That's what your imagination is for.. O_o And if ye're anything like me, ye'll know that reading a book like The Hobbit, or LOTR & using your imagination to see the world, to create those memorable feelings, is immeasurably more satisfying than watching any movie. Not dissing the LOTR movies here peoples, I quite enjoy the.. first one, but they're just movies with no-where near the feeling of the books. That being said, I like perrty pictures too & so I put some in here because I could. Suggestion: Forget the pictures, have a quiet room, close yours eyes, sit back & listen. With any luck it's a rainy day. I always seemed to love reading LOTR & The Hobbit on rainy days..Category: Entertainment

Tolkien was a very ...
Tolkien was a very devout Catholic, not particularly interested in women, and had intended The Hobbit to be a children's book. So, no, there really is no "Valley of Nymphomaniacs" in The Hobbit. :P Sure, some women such as Anna Komnena wrote and were highly educated but they were a minority being either the very rich or nuns (who were usually from rich families too). The vast, vast majority were "just" wives and mothers.

thank goodness! I thought that was quite a leap. Or are you also pulling my leg? Now I'll have to actually get a copy and check it out for myself. I think the Nymphomaniacs must be from Monty Python's Holy Grail movie. Actually, there were lots of educated noble women in the Middle Ages, whose family's did not need to marry them off for political purposes so they were sent to convents, where they were sometimes suspected of carrying on worldly affairs ;)

Not much more. ...
Not much more. Women's role has always been predominantly domestic until very recently. And there is no "Valley of Nymphomaniacs" in The Hobbit. The guy who posted that was joking.

Women have always ...
Women have always done more than look after children and the house (which is interesting in itself and a worthy adventure), but it was predominantly men who wrote history until only recently. And so, women's role and contribution to the world has been downplayed for much of that time. And what does a valley of nymphomaniacs have to do with Medieval Europe anyway?! I don't see that connection.

He was basing ...
He was basing Middle Earth loosely upon Medieval Europe, at least in terms of society. Until recently women didn't do much but look after children and the house; not very interesting to write about.

Yes, thank you for ...
Yes, thank you for pointing this out. The one thing I found missing in the story was any female characters with which to identify. I find it disturbing to learn that Tolkein's only females in this book are nymphomaniacs. Maybe when he wrote it, girls weren't supposed to have adventures. But then again, his buddy CS Lewis had great female characters who were ready for all kinds of adventures. Go figure.

Nicol Williamson was Scottish-born, so his Sean Connery would be one of the better ones. :3

That's because the valley of the nymphomaniacs has been cut out. All five-hundred elven maidens that are in The Hobbit are in that one chapter. :j

i think i would be scared to read a tolkein nymphomaniac tale. his stories have a distinct lack of women in them.

Thank you for posting this! I was given the LPs for this in 4th grade from my mom for Christmas. Listening now, I still can recite parts right along with Mr Williamson. Since its only available still on LP, is there a way to transfer it to CD or something? I still have a turntable, just don't use it too much. Edited or not, this is a favorite version of this book for me.

I thought that was Rivendell which is included with all that flirtatious tra-la-la-ing (and Legolas could hardly have been the only Elf to like his men short, stout and hairy)
