Community Living in a Resource Based Economy This example is an island on a lake. These spots are very rare but would be ideal if possible Picture Link: http://twitpic.com/6eiqcy

I like the idea, ...
I like the idea, but wondering about making it a floating island so you can move it as sea levels and disasters require. Could you design it a floating island Derek? I didn't know this, but floating islands are already real. A nice simple one to start, for example: (copy and paste after you type the you tube.com): /watch?v=Cvn9l1pJ3-A

only a small amount ...
only a small amount of these kinds of areas can be done in this world because only so many islands exist. For me this would be ideal, but thats personal preference because i love the water.

I like that and we ...
I like that and we all should aspire to build a world like that. But i don't think an island is needed. It's pretty similar to "Crystal water village" located in australia. A nice self suficent village. crystalwaters org

Well it's ...
Well it's interesting but there really is alot missing. Doesn't matter though because I think your point is that it can be done right? Yes a resource based economy is in fact do able and in therory a beautiful thing. Biggest flaw that stands out to me is security. With out it a smallish group could take over the entire island. Yes I believe you need a well armed populous at the very least or the island resourced based economy will be short lived.

Still boggles my ...
Still boggles my mind why utility companies do not offer plans to home owners to install solar/wind on the property with grid tie. The revenue from the energy created could go into paying for the installation of the hardware. Yes solar is inefficient, especially in northern climates but here is still a return and there are methods such as adding a lens to focus and intensify light to increase the amount of light/energy that can be harvested. Have you seen the lenses? Look like /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

As long as it was ...
As long as it was community based and not based on plans or regulations from a central government, ideas like yours have a chance at working. You, I, a buisness or cummunity will try different practices to see what is feasable and sustainable or you will steal ideas that work from other communities and try to impliment them. A large government on the other hand... Really like your idea of commuting and using roads/rail for commerce.

Reminds me of ...
Reminds me of Plato's Account of Atlantis. Only 1 trireme wide through the waterways.

It was fun to make this and easier than I thought. I suck at art skills (big time) and this was a good piece considering it can be more improved.

Thank you for your ...
Thank you for your comments. I will be making a new one live from scratch and a Quarry will be added into it and with the help of all the comments I can see other things I am missing as well as different perspectives. If you were living in this island (assuming you like islands) what would be missing that you would really love? Thank you :)

import/export has ...
import/export has many things covered. I agree with livestock, fields and timber and thus all those are covered in this example. Money is gold and we mine it as this community does not care about paper rectangles and digital numbers pertaining to those rectangles. There is a harbor and a place for helicopters to come and go. We trade with gold and extra stuff we make through industry.

You need an area ...
You need an area for a quarry, you need fields to grow feed for livestock, you also need to grow timber for lumber. Where do you get the money to buy the things you need, where do you get fuel for the helicopter and medicines for the hospitals? Are you growing a surplus of goods for trade? If so you will need more room than you have alloted.
