A History of Hebrew Part 2: The original language
This is a segment of a much larger video production that I am working on and am looking for feedback (positive and negative) on the layout and content. --------------------------- Many theological discussions, teachings and debates use phrases like "The Bible says," or "God says." From a technical point of view, the problem with these statements is that it assumes the Bible was written in English, which of course we all know is not true. The Bible does not say "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." The more accurate statement would be, "The Bible says, 'bereshiyt bara elohiym et hashamayim v'et ha'arets,' which is often translated and interpreted as 'In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.'" (use paleo script for the Hebrew). While this may sound trivial, it is in fact a very important issue as many theological differences, divisions and arguments are based on faulty interpretations of the text that could easily be resolved by examining the original language. Once the Hebrew text is recognized, its meanings and interpretations can then be discussed properly. As an example, the Hebrew word reshiyt, often translated as "beginning" in Genesis 1:1, can be used for the beginning of an event, but it can also be used for the "best" of something such as we see in Numbers 18:12 - "All the fat of the oil and all the fat of the wine and wheat, the "best" of them which they will give to Yahweh for a gift. Also, the Hebrew word bara does not mean "create," in fact, you can see this same word being translated more accurately in 1 Samuel 2:29 where the KJV reads, "making yourselves fat." The Hebrew word translated as "fat" here is the very same Hebrew word translated as "create" in Gen 1:1. Rather then attempting an interpretation from the English, one should at the least be attempting to understand the text from its Hebraic origin. Through the use of an English Bible and a Concordance, the student is able to find the Hebrew word used in the text that lies behind the English. When using this tool, it quickly becomes evident that the English translators of the text were not very consistent in how they translated Hebrew words. While it is true that one English word can not translate one Hebrew word perfectly and some translational liberties are necessary, this should only be done out of necessity and the change should be noted in a footnote to aid the student with proper understanding and interpretation. --------------------------- Credits Narration: Jeff A. I so agree with ...
I so agree with with the premise of this video. The world needs to pick up on this too. Technically no one can say: "God said..." then proceed to speak in English.

Thank you for this ...
Thank you for this video. It makes me even more grateful that I converted to Judaism.

Very true. However ...
Very true. However it's called cherry picking for most of us. To me there are only 2 real commandments. Love God, love others. If all did this instead of fighting over doctrines the world would be a much better place. I find joy and sadness with the bible, always have. It's not a history book, its not a science book, but it does seem to me a more psychological book bc ethics and morality are psychological.Don't do to someone else what you would hate for yourself.

I agree that there ...
I agree that there are people that use the bible for Evil, David Koresh comes to mind. However, you have to have that kind of evil already residing in your heart. For instance, Jesus was used during WWII to incite the Germans into hating the Jews. It worked. I can only read the word of God and apply it to my life, in today's world.

It depends. People ...
It depends. People use the bible for good and bad.It gave a reason to keep slavery, keep women in their place, burn witches and heretics, stone children for disobedience, and only a husband could get a divorce. It was used to slaughter innocents along with the enemy, and a whole nation could suffer for what their leader did against God. So yeah, it does matter.

You are not using ...
You are not using Gematria values for the original Hebrew and Aramaic.Gematria was not used to translate. Had you used the Gematria, you would see that Nefesh, means soul and always will. We also need to remember that most of the men that "translated" the bible, were to a degree Anti-Semitic. Things were changed for instance where, in Hebrew, or Aramaic do you find the word Easter, rather than Passover. Passover was changed to Easter so it would sound less Jewish and more christian.

Did you use ...
Did you use Gematria to translate or are you just going by the "English" version bibles? Are you using King James version of the translation? I want to know. Because if you are not using the Ancient Hebrew or Aramaic to translate you are making a huge mistake and can be wrong in what you are showing here. However, I will give you the benefit of the doubt until I'm done seeing your videos.

Israel is a miracle ...
Israel is a miracle of God, there is no way around that. The bible is a book that teaches me how to live, how to be good and how to love. It's the greatest book on ethics that ever existed. Does it matter really?
Tonithenightowl on 2012-02-21
That would explain ...
That would explain it. If it were not for the Jewish people and the State of Israel, I would conclude the bible as a spiritual text, no more valid than any other. However till this day, I don't know how Israel is there and thriving if not for the promise of G-d. It defies logic they are there and a force to be reckoned with, with or without the USA. They never asked us to shed blood for their independence. They did it on their own. It still amazes me.

The Bible was ...
The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, which is an Eastern style of writing. Two thousand years ago it was translated into Greek, which is a Western style of writing. The problems comes when you translate/interpret this Eastern text into a Western one.

So it's a Jewish ...
So it's a Jewish record, written by Jewish scribes, so the problem came when Hebrew had to be translated into Greek, changing it's original meaning? I always thought Greek was suppose to be what is known as the Perfect Language. Therefore accepted as the language that would come the closest to the being accurate. Or was it simply what was done by Constantine and the Nicean Council that lead to the story we have today and the established doctrine of the RCC?
ancienthebreworg on 2012-02-06
No, there is no ...
No, there is no Jewish record of Yeshua (Jesus' Hebrew name) except the NT, which in my opinion is a Jewish record.
Tonithenightowl on 2012-02-06
May I ask if there ...
May I ask if there is any Jewish record of Jesus existing? I know Christians sight Josephus but that's been deemed a forgery. If he did exist and was an observant Jew then his teachings have been horribly maligned. The Jewish people have suffered terribly bc of this and yet fundies believe they brought it on themselves for not accepting the Christ. How sick is that? Believe or burn isn't much of a choice. Thank you for your time, it's appreciated and I respect your views.

It is all about the ...
It is all about the history of the Church, a basically gentile organization attempting to use the Bible to legitimize their man-made doctrines.
Tonithenightowl on 2012-02-04
Exactly. I never ...
Exactly. I never understood how Jesus knowing the Law, could have been so opposite the prime tenets of the Law. God is not a man, God is Spirit. God is One, no other god before Me. No one can forgive sin but God. Blood sacrifice was the least way to atone for sins, and human sacrifice was taboo. How could he have been so off base and still consider himself a Jew? A messiah complex?

I have not heard of ...
I have not heard of Lewis Black, but he is absolutely right and I think that Christians forget this. This is a Jewish book, their history, their story. Even the first believers of Yeshua (Jesus) were Jews, not Gentiles.

Jewish comic Lewis ...
Jewish comic Lewis Black said to Christians, " Sorry, but you got the bible all wrong and we should know, it's our book." Guess he wasn't just whistling Dixie.

like Jeff said, the ...
like Jeff said, the only way you are going to get as close as possible is by learning the Hebrew. When starting your journey, consider each word as a discovered treasure to behold and learn. Each letter of Hebrew has a significant meaning. The Almighty Creator's name of yood-heh-vav-heh translates to hand-behold-nail/stake-behold. I immediately knew what this meant. As for the title God, it really is nothing more than a generic title. El is better translated as strong shepherd.

As I often mention ...
As I often mention in my teachings, all of the modern English translations translate the Ancient Eastern Hebrew text into a Modern Western text, this alone changes the whole meaning of everything. There are no modern Bibles that retain the original Eastern thought behind the text. This is the reason I have created the Mechanical Translation (Genesis and Exodus only complete thus far).
