Luis von Ahn: Massive-scale online collaboration

http://www.ted.com After re-purposing CAPTCHA so each human-typed response helps digitize books, Luis von Ahn wondered how else to use small contributions by many on the Internet for greater good. At TEDxCMU, he shares how his ambitious new project, Duolingo, will help millions learn a new language while translating the Web quickly and accurately -- all for free. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate

These people in ...
These people in comments complaining how "But he IS making money!" You know what? Give him money. Lots of it. This is one human who truly deserves it. What an amazing guy.

What makes your ...
What makes your personal opinion a fact? Did I say he isn't making money? No, I said I believe he isn't doing it for the money. Also, what your saying is wrong. As he pointed out (and so did I in my comment), they could not possibly afford to pay these professionals to do the work he is doing. So absolutely no work is getting driven away from them. He deserves to make a large profit for innovation and the social benefits it entails.

You're an authority ...
You're an authority that has say over this? He did sell Captcha to Google. If u think he isn't making money from digitizing books, u need to complete that GED. If u don't think the market d switch 2 profitable languages ur confused (as all the English speakers are online--growth India, Africa, S America Central Eastern Asia comes online market'll drive trnsltn from professionals who've invested years of study 2 master). BTW Ur idiom is wrong: I don't 'speak to' I'm writing about the facts.

Stop being so ...
Stop being so pessimistic. You can't speak to his intentions and motivations, however I think it's pretty clear to everyone else that he isn't doing this for money. What is bad about thousands or millions of people working together to effortlessly make a difference to the world? And by the way, no one is losing money or jobs over this. As he said, it would have cost over 50 million us$ to translate a single website like wikipedia. Which obviously would never have happened.

He probably gets ...
He probably gets paid a ton from all the sites that use the CAPTCHA device... I can not think of a site I have every had to register to that didn't include one of them. I am sure they are required to pay a small licensing fee.

Actually he's getting paid for it--he isn't paying the people who do it.

He can talk all he ...
He can talk all he wants about how it is free while he is eliminating the income of translators. That was his motivation: he wants to make money off of the labor of others who he doesn't pay. Great, he just avoids employing professionals. So more people who have spend post graduate years to acquire a skill are now equal to a coffee shop service employee.
