Non violence and peace education in school

This is an edited version of Walk the Talk, an inside story of Rozelle Public Primary School in Sydney Australia. Rozelle at the time of this video making was a world wide leading example of the possibility for social change. The school being an inner city public school was transformed through the leadership of the principal and the initiatives that she supported. Restorative Justice and Alternatives To Violence joined together as a foundation for experiencing peace education as a living system within the school environment. Both Lyn Doppler and Terry O'Connell are leadership examples of how as a whole school community, students staff and parents learnt to use restorative and alternative to violence language and practice to relate, think and learn together.

Upeace commencement 2010, "peace education around the world", peace education.wmv

On Friday, 9 July 2010, the United Nations-mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) held its 2010 commencement ceremony at the Auditorio Nacional in San José. The keynote speaker of the ceremony was HE Laura Chinchilla Miranda, President of the Republic of Costa Rica. This year 200 students from 57 countries received their Master's Degree with qualifications from the ten programmes UPEACE currently offers, all of which focus on peace and conflict studies. The students concluded an intensive 11-month programme with a commitment to peace, evident with the completion of graduation projects involving various themes of pressing interest such as refugees, human rights, media, gender, education, international law, and world politics.

THE FILM World Peace...and other 4th-grade achievements interweaves the story of John Hunter, a teacher in Charlottesville, Virginia, with his students' participation in an exercise called the World Peace Game. The game triggers an eight-week transformation of the children from students of a neighborhood public school to citizens of the world. The film reveals how a wise, loving teacher can unleash students' full potential. The film traces how Hunter's unique teaching career emerges from his own diverse background. An African-American educated in the segregated schools of rural Virginia, where his mother was his 4th grade teacher, he was selected by his community to be one of seven students to integrate a previously all-white middle school. After graduation, he traveled extensively to China, Japan, and India, and his exposure to the Ghandian principles of non-violence led him to ask what he could do as a teacher to work toward a more peaceful world. Hunter teaches the concept of peace not as a utopian dream but as an attainable goal to strive for, and he provides his students with the tools for this effort. Fethullah Gulen's contributions to peace were discussed at the conference, Preventing Violence and Achieving World Peace: The Contributions of the Gulen Movement, on October 29, 2009 at the University of Maryland, College Park held by the Rumi Forum of Maryland. The conference is co-sponsored by Dept. of Anthropology ,The Rumi Club, Graduate Student Government at the University of Maryland, College Park. Several distinguished speakers including former ambassador, US State Department official, academicians talked about the contributions of the Gulen Movement to the World Peace. The conference opened with a keynote speech by Dr. Ori Z. Soltes from Georgetown University, titled, Socrates, Violence, Education, the Gulen Movement, and Peace. This talk compared Socrates aims to those of the Gulen Movement. Dr. Soltes noted that like Gulen, Socrates emphasized importance of ethics and the process of dialogue for bringing morality into all facets of life. Gulen emphasizes that education is the ultimate means through which we can deduce Divine will and thus improve the world. He noted that unlike Socrates, the Gulen Movement has been able to put Gulen's ideas into action through its varied educational programs, media, cable, and internet programming. The World Wide Rotaract Meeting Hosted by Egypt - Interota 2011 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Running for the 11th time, the Interota has finally made its way to Egypt and is being hosted in Hurghada under the theme "Peace, Education and Environment". Interota is a worldwide Rotaract meeting, held every that is organized and sponsored by Rotaractors every three years. It provides Rotaractors with a forum for sharing ideas, concerns, and experiences with other Rotaract club members around the world. Participants are also treated to sightseeing and other cultural events throughout the weeklong event. Although Interota is not an official Rotary International meeting, the RI Board of Directors recognizes its value and supports the event by approving its program content and by ensuring representation of RI leadership. This triennial meeting offers workshops, discussions, and speakers on topics of interest. It is also an opportunity to network and socialize with fellow Rotaractors from around the world. At the meeting, delegations from various countries present conference proposals for the upcoming Interota, and participants then, vote to select the next meeting site.

Fethullah gulen included in the peace curriculum

The Peace Learning Center in Eagle Creek, Illinois has been teaching thousands of young people about how to be a peacemaker using the examples of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Eleanor Roosevelt and Martin Luther King. Now the Peace Center has added Fethullah Gulen to the curriculum and Executive Director Tim Nation says Gulen's work to promote interfaith dialogue and community service makes him an excellent peacemaker. "By reading Fethullah Gulen's work and seeing that he is been able to help start over fifteen hundred schools around the world that is so inspirational because I know and I am committed to education my self. If you can educate a child and I really love the theory that we need to is raise and enlighten generation of young people. Young people who are tolerant of difference and that is the muslim of peace learning center and that is who we thought Fethullah Gulen will made an excellent peacemaker" said Tim Nation. The Peace Learning Center has taught some 10000 young people in 40 partner schools how to live in peace by teaching them conflict resolution skills. Educators from the Learning Center teach children about world leaders who have used non-violence to change the world.
