Fallout from fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant - richard broinowski

Fallout from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant - Richard Broinowski
Journalist, author, diplomat and Adjunct Professor from the University of Sydney, Richard Broinowski tells the story of the Fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. His talk looks back to the development of the Nuclear Village in Japan, including General Electric and the American state's successful efforts to sell nuclear energy to Japan under the auspices of selling them energy self-sufficiency. Richard speaks Japanese, has lived in Japan and made many visits. He has thoroughly researched the incident and subsequent events and impacts. He is confident that Japan has, post-Fukushima, 'turned a corner' and notes that many Japanese prefectures are becoming less inclined to restart reactors in the wake of the Japanese people's diminishing faith in the technology and its various safeguards. Will we see Japan embrace renewable energy production with their famous reputation for innovation and stoicism? What does the Fukushima disaster mean for the future of the nuclear power industry beyond Japanese shores? What of the Australian uranium mining industry, and its commercial viability? Richard Broinowski gave this public lecture in the Hawke Centre at the University of South Australia in February of 2012, ahead of the release of his forthcoming book on the subject.

Earth focus episode 32 - nuclear power: risks and consequences

Earth Focus Episode 32 - Nuclear Power: Risks and Consequences
(Earth Focus: Episode 32) Nuclear Power: Risks and Consequences, an original Earth Focus investigative report, looks at the untold stories behind three of the world's largest nuclear disasters: Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima. According to government and industry officials, no one died as a result of Three Mile Island and only low doses of radiation -- equivalent to a single chest XRay were released. But many local residents disagree and cite medical evidence that radiation released from the Three Mile Island reactor was severe enough to cause disease and death. It's been 30 years but the controversy continues. Chernobyl was the worse nuclear disaster in history. A new book, Chernobyl: Consequences of a Catastrophe says that almost a million people died as a result of the nuclear accident -- not 4000 as The World Health Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency claim. A screw up or a coverup? Earth Focus looks at evidence that links radioactive exposure to diminished intelligence, premature aging and a variety of other health conditions. Given the severity of the accident in Fukushima and the inability of the government to provide action to safeguard large portions of its population, the Japanese government moved the goal posts on what is considered safe radiation exposure for children and nuclear workers. Japanese organized crime, the Yakuza, is now becoming actively involved in the cleanup of radioactive waste.

When you hear about nuclear energy, what comes to mind first? Well, the risks associated in the event of an accident, more than the benefits of nuclear energy. Well, it happened in the Fukushima plant in Japan, after a series of earthquakes and a tsunami which triggered the shutting down of three reactors that were operational at that time. That accident in March 2011 has elicited varied views, on whether time is right for the African countries to adopt nuclear energy. In part two of the series "Tapping the nuclear energy potential," Rosalia Omungo Opondo reports on the renewed clamor for nuclear energy.

The government announced it would immediately shut down the country's oldest atomic power plants, and phase out the rest of them even faster than originally planed. The last one is now scheduled to go off line in 2022. But are the goals workable and realistic? A critical assessment of a controversial decision.

Japan's nuclear disaster explained

Japan's Nuclear Disaster Explained
Donate: american.redcross.org In which Hank explains nuclear power and the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Japan. In short, fission products continually decaying in both active and spent fuel rods create enough heat to melt themselves. The coolant systems that would prevent this from happening were disabled by the tsunami. Cracks in the fuel rods created an environment allowing hydrogen to form, which concentrated and then exploded several times destroying both the primary and secondary containment structures at at least one reactor. The result is that the reactor needs to remain cooled or else radiation from the meltdown will be released to the environment in significant quantities. The people working to keep the reactor from overheating are risking their lives to do so, and we all hope they will be able to stabilize the reactor without harm.

Three mile island nuclear power station meltdown ( fukushima is far worse ).

Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Station Meltdown ( Fukushima is far worse ).
In the nighttime hours preceding the incident, the TMI-2 reactor was running at 97% of full power, while the companion TMI-1 reactor was shut down for refueling. The chain of events leading to the partial core meltdown began at 4 am EST on March 28, 1979, in TMI-2's secondary loop, one of the three main water/steam loops in a pressurized water reactor. Workers were cleaning a blockage in one of the eight condensate polishers (sophisticated filters cleaning the secondary loop water), when, for reasons still unknown, the pumps feeding the polishers stopped. When a bypass valve did not open, water stopped flowing to the secondary's main feedwater pumps, which also shut down. With the steam generators no longer receiving water, they stopped and the reactor performed an emergency shutdown (SCRAM). Within eight seconds, control rods were inserted into the core to halt the nuclear chain reaction but the reactor continued to generate decay heat and, because steam was no longer being used by the turbine, heat was no longer being removed from the reactor's primary water loop. Once the secondary feedwater pumps stopped, three auxiliary pumps activated automatically. However, because the valves had been closed for routine maintenance, the system was unable to pump any water. The closure of these valves was a violation of a key NRC rule, according to which the reactor must be shut down if all auxiliary feed pumps are closed for maintenance. This failure was later singled out by NRC ...

'no japan without nuclear energy'

'No Japan without nuclear energy'
Despite concerns over Japan's government hushing up the dangers, the second highest-ranking nuclear official in the country thinks the issue is simply too complicated for the general public to come to terms with. RT takes a closer look at the nuclear crisis in Japan in an interview with Hidehiko Nishiyama, a spokesman for the Nuclear Industry and Safety Agency. "The Japanese government tried to distribute or make available all the information we got from TEPCO [Tokyo Electric Power Company] and from our monitoring assistants..., [but ] we have to explain [the situation] in the manner which people can easily understand," he told RT. The Japanese official noted that, despite all the figures on the situation around the country's nuclear crisis being distributed to the public, it is not always easy for ordinary people to understand what these figures actually mean -- how dangerous or safe a particular situation is. "We think that, except for places very close to the nuclear power plant, Fukushima Daiichi, there is no big risk for ordinary people. So we should make them understand that point," he said. Nuclear vs green - world - november 2010

Nuclear vs Green - World - November 2010
It's an ongoing debate around the world - nuclear power or green energy? Nuclear developments continue to inspire global protests, but are the magic words 'renewable energy' really a viable alternative? We're told that today's nuclear plants are environmentally friendly, but they still "leave a 100000 year disposal problem". After Chernobyl, scientists worldwide are trying to develop a way to store radioactive waste safely for a million years. The intense opposition to this ambitious aim is clear: "humanity is not yet equipped to deal with this responsibly". But is nuclear power that easy to replace? In theory, if 1% of the Sahara was covered in solar panels, it could provide enough power for the whole world. Despite the vast cost and complex logistics of running a solar plant in Morocco this idea may yet have potential, but it isn't a fairytale solution. ORF

Japan marks anniversary of fukushima nuclear accident

Japan Marks Anniversary of Fukushima Nuclear Accident
A year later, decontamination and construction crews are still working to clean up the nuclear disaster at Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi Power plant. Experts expect the cleanup will take decades and cost tens of billions of dollars. The earthquake and resulting tsunami that hit Japan 's east coast last March 11th was one of the biggest the world has ever recorded, killing nearly 16000 people, injuring 6000 and causing another 3000 to go missing. But the natural disaster was eclipsed by news of the nuclear one, which was the worst since the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986. Japan's struggles in dealing with Fukushima captivated the world's attention for weeks, as a small group of men in radiation suits fought to cool the plant's damaged and burning reactors. 200000 area residents were evacuated. Polling shows public opinion around nuclear power also remains damaged, with the possible impact of natural disasters on plants and the power to contain damage still in question. Eleven US power companies are currently seeking license extensions for 15 nuclear power plants across America built decades ago. In the wake of Fukushima, the future of old plants, and the viability of new ones, hangs in the balance.

Spread Professor Chris Busby's message about Japan and the nuclear industry's intentional coverup of Fukushima radioactive problem, how Japan is trucking tons of radioactive waste to south Japan, etc. Prof. Busby has been working on making supplements that block some of the radioactive nucleotides from attaching themselves to the DNA.
