Nasa's kepler mission discovers its first rocky planet

NASA'S Kepler Mission Discovers Its First Rocky Planet
NASA's Kepler spacecraft has discovered Kepler-10b, its first confirmed rocky planet and the smallest transiting exoplanet discovered to date. Kepler-10b is only 1.4 times the size of Earth and has an average density of 8.8 grams per cubic centimeter, similar to that of an iron dumbbell. The planet orbits its star in only 0.84 days and is not in the habitable zone, where liquid water could exist. Nasa's kepler mission announces latest planetary discovery

NASA's Kepler Mission Announces Latest Planetary Discovery
The Kepler mission's science team announced its latest finding at a press conference on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011. The team announced the confirmation of Kepler-22b, its first planet found in the "habitable zone," the region where liquid water could exist on a planet's surface. The planet is about 2.4 times the radius of Earth, orbits around a star similar to our sun and is located 600 light-years away. Scientists don't yet know if Kepler-22b has a predominantly rocky, gaseous or liquid composition, but its discovery is a step closer to finding Earth-like planets. The planet's host star belongs to the same class as our sun, called G-type, although it is slightly smaller and cooler. Kepler also has discovered 1094 new planet candidates, nearly doubling its previously known count. Since the last catalog was released in February, the number of planet candidates identified by Kepler has increased by 89 percent and now totals 2326. Of these, 207 are approximately Earth-size, 680 are super Earth-size, 1181 are Neptune-size, 203 are Jupiter-size and 55 are larger than Jupiter. The findings, based on observations conducted May 2009 to September 2010, show a dramatic increase in the numbers of smaller-size planet candidates. NASA's Kepler Mission Finds Earth-size Planet Candidates in Habitable Zone, Six Planet System
NASA's Kepler mission has discovered its first Earth-size planet candidates and its first candidates in the habitable zone, a region where liquid water could exist on a planet's surface. Five of the potential planets are near Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of smaller, cooler stars than our sun. Kepler also found six confirmed planets orbiting a sun-like star, Kepler-11. This is the largest group of transiting planets orbiting a single star yet discovered outside our solar system. Located approximately 2000 light years from Earth, Kepler-11 is the most tightly packed planetary system yet discovered. All six of its confirmed planets have orbits smaller than Venus, and five of the six have orbits smaller than Mercury's. For more information about the Kepler Mission, please visit www.nasa.gov

Nasa finds earth-like planet kepler 22-b

NASA FINDS EARTH-LIKE PLANET Kepler 22-B
NASA FINDS EARTH-LIKE PLANET Kepler 22-B The planet is smack in the middle of what astronomers call the Goldilocks zone, that hard to find place that's not too hot, not too cold, where water, which is essential for life, doesn't freeze or boil. And it has a shopping mall-like surface temperature of near 72 degrees (22 degrees Celsius), scientists say. The planet's confirmation was announced by NASA along with other discoveries by its Kepler telescope, which was launched on a planet-hunting mission in 2009. That's the first planet confirmed in the habitable zone for Kepler, which had already found Earth-like rocky planets elsewhere. Twice before astronomers have announced a planet found in that zone, but neither have been as promising. "This is a phenomenal discovery in the course of human history," Geoff Marcy of University of California, Berkeley, one of the pioneers of planet-hunting outside our solar system, said in an email. "This discovery shows that we Homo sapiens are straining our reach into the universe to find planets that remind us of home. We are almost there." The new planet - named Kepler-22b - has key aspects it shares with Earth. It circles a star that could be the twin of our sun and at just about the same distance. The planet's year of 290 days is even close to ours. It likely has water and rock. The only trouble is the planet's a bit big for life to exist on the surface. The planet is about 2.4 times the size of Earth. It could be more like the gas-and ...

Nasa's kepler observatory find five new planets: the truth is near abou nibiru's planetary system

NASA's Kepler Observatory find FIVE NEW Planets: The Truth is near abou Nibiru's Planetary System
NASA's Kepler space telescope, designed to find Earth-size planets in the habitable zone of sun-like stars, has discovered its first five new exoplanets, or planets beyond our solar system. Kepler's high sensitivity to both small and large planets enabled the discovery of the exoplanets, named Kepler 4b, 5b, 6b, 7b and 8b. The discoveries were announced Monday, Jan. 4, by the members of the Kepler science team during a news briefing at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Washington. "These observations contribute to our understanding of how planetary systems form and evolve from the gas and dust disks that give rise to both the stars and their planets," said William Borucki of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. Borucki is the mission's science principal investigator. "The discoveries also show that our science instrument is working well. Indications are that Kepler will meet all its science goals." Known as "hot Jupiters" because of their high masses and extreme temperatures, the new exoplanets range in size from similar to Neptune to larger than Jupiter. They have orbits ranging from 3.3 to 4.9 days. Estimated temperatures of the planets range from 2200 to 3000 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than molten lava and much too hot for life as we know it. All five of the exoplanets orbit stars hotter and larger than Earth's sun. "It's gratifying to see the first Kepler discoveries rolling off the assembly line," said Jon Morse, director of the ...

Nasa's kepler discovery confirms first planet orbiting two stars

NASA's Kepler Discovery Confirms First Planet Orbiting Two Stars
September 15, 2011 (CERESTV.com) PASADENA, Calif. -- The existence of a world with a double sunset, as portrayed in the film Star Wars more than 30 years ago, is now scientific fact. NASA's Kepler mission has made the first unambiguous detection of a circumbinary planet -- a planet orbiting two stars -- 200 light-years from Earth. Unlike Star Wars' Tatooine, the planet is cold, gaseous and not thought to harbor life, but its discovery demonstrates the diversity of planets in our galaxy. Previous research has hinted at the existence of circumbinary planets, but clear confirmation proved elusive. Kepler detected such a planet, known as Kepler-16b, by observing transits, where the brightness of a parent star dims from the planet crossing in front of it. "This discovery confirms a new class of planetary systems that could harbor life," Kepler Principal Investigator William Borucki, of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., said. "Given that most stars in our galaxy are part of a binary system, this means the opportunities for life are much broader than if planets form only around single stars. This milestone discovery confirms a theory that scientists have had for decades but could not prove until now." A research team led by Laurance Doyle of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., used data from the Kepler space telescope, which measures dips in the brightness of more than 150000 stars, to search for transiting planets. Kepler is the first NASA mission ...

Nasa's kepler mission spies changing phases in a distant world

NASA'S Kepler Mission Spies Changing Phases in a Distant World
WASHINGTON -- NASA's new exoplanet-hunting Kepler space telescope has detected the atmosphere of a known giant gas planet, demonstrating the telescope's extraordinary scientific capabilities. Below: Media Used in Briefing (AVI format is best for Windows users who do not have Quicktime plugin) ...these new data indicate the mission is indeed capable of finding Earth-like planets, if they exist...."When the light curves from tens of thousands of stars were shown to the Kepler science team, everyone was awed; no one had ever seen such exquisitely detailed measurements of the light variations of so many different types of stars," said William Borucki, the principal science investigator.... The observations were collected from a planet called HAT-P-7, known to transit a star located about 1000 light years from Earth. The planet orbits the star in just 2.2 days and is 26 times closer than Earth is to the sun. ...It is so close to its star, the planet is as hot as the glowing red heating element on a stove. ...these new measurements are so precise, they also show a smooth rise and fall of the light between transits caused by the changing phases of the planet, similar to those of our moon. This is a combination of both the light emitted from the planet and the light reflected off the planet. The smooth rise and fall of light is also punctuated by a small drop in light, called an occultation, exactly halfway between each transit. An occultation happens when a planet passes behind ...

Nasa discovers and confirms life-sustaining planet: kepler-22b

NASA Discovers and Confirms Life-sustaining Planet: Kepler-22b
Oh, how I wish I could live in the world of Mass Effect or Star Wars... ----- (CBS/AP) NASA has found a new planet outside Earth's solar system that is eerily similar to Earth in important aspects. Scientists say the temperature on the surface of the planet, known as Kepler-22b, is about a comfy 72 degrees (22 Celsius). Its star could almost be a twin of Earth's sun. It probably has water and land. It was found in the middle of the habitable zone, making it the best potential target for life. However, getting there would take some time: Kepler-22b is about 600 light years away (A light year is the distance light travels in a year, or about 6 trillion miles.) The discovery announced Monday was made by NASA's Kepler planet-hunting telescope. This is the first time the agency has confirmed a planet outside Earth's solar system in the not-too-hot, not-too-cold habitable zone. This is the region around a star where liquid water, a requirement for life on Earth, could persist. The planet is estimated to be 2.4 times the size of Earth, which would make it the smallest found to orbit in the middle of the habitable zone of a star like our sun. Twice before astronomers have announced planets found in that zone, but neither was as promising. One was disputed; the other is on the hot edge of the zone. Kepler 22-B is the smallest and the best positioned of the more than 500 planets found to orbit stars beyond our solar system to have liquid water on its surface -- among the ...

Kepler-11 system with 6 planets [720p]

Kepler-11 System With 6 Planets [720p]
Scientists using NASA's Kepler, a space telescope, recently discovered six planets made of a mix of rock and gases orbiting a single sun-like star, known as Kepler-11, which is located approximately 2000 light years from Earth. All of the planets orbiting Kepler-11, a yellow dwarf star, are larger than Earth, with the largest ones being comparable in size to Uranus and Neptune. The innermost planet, Kepler-11b, is ten times closer to its star than Earth is to the sun. Moving outwards, the other planets are Kepler-11c, Kepler-11d, Kepler-11e, Kepler-11f, and the outermost planet, Kepler-11g, which is twice as close to its star than Earth is to the sun. If placed in our solar system, Kepler-11g would orbit between Mercury and Venus, and the other five planets would orbit between Mercury and our sun. The orbits of the five inner planets in the Kepler-11 planetary system are much closer together than any of the planets in our solar system. The inner five exoplanets have orbital periods between 10 and 47 days around the dwarf star, while Kepler-11g has a period of 118 days. credit: NASA/Ames/JPL-Caltech source: photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov

Kepler: a search for habitable planets

Kepler: A Search for Habitable Planets
Kepler: NASA's first mission capable of finding Earth-size and smaller planets around other stars The centuries-old quest for other worlds like our Earth has been rejuvenated by the intense excitement and popular interest surrounding the discovery of hundreds of planets orbiting other stars. There is now clear evidence for substantial numbers of three types of exoplanets; gas giants, hot-super-Earths in short period orbits, and ice giants. The challenge now is to find terrestrial planets (ie, those one half to twice the size of the Earth), especially those in the habitable zone→ of their stars where liquid water might exist on the surface of the planet. The Kepler Mission, NASA Discovery mission #10, is specifically designed to survey our region of the Milky Way galaxy to discover hundreds of Earth-size and smaller planets in or near the habitable zone→ and determine the fraction of the hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy that might have such planets.

Extrasolar planet: the discoveries of kepler mission by natalie batalha

Extrasolar Planet: The Discoveries of Kepler Mission by Natalie Batalha
ABSTRACT Humankind's speculation about the existence of other worlds like our own turned into a veritable quest with the launch of NASA's Kepler spacecraft in March 2009. The mission is designed to survey a slice of the Milky Way to identify planets orbiting other stars by looking for the telltale dimming of light that occurs when an orbiting planet passes in front of the star. Kepler has discovered over 2300 viable planet candidates ranging from one-half the size of Earth to twice the size of Jupiter. From scorched, rocky planets to temperate giants, we'll hear about Kepler's milestone discoveries and the techniques scientists are using to make them. Kepler is honing in on the answer to the question that drives the mission: Are potentially habitable worlds abundant in our galaxy? BIOGRAPHY Dr. Natalie Batalha is a professor of physics and astronomy at San José State University in the heart of Silicon Valley, California and the Science Team Lead of NASA's Kepler Mission. She holds a bachelor's in physics from the University of California (UC), Berkeley, and a doctorate in astrophysics from UC Santa Cruz. Dr. Batalha started her career as a stellar spectroscopist studying young, sun-like stars. After a post-doctoral fellowship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Dr. Batalha returned to California. Inspired by the growing number of exoplanet discoveries, she joined the team led by William Borucki at NASA's Ames Research Center working on transit photometry—an emerging technology for ...

Are we alone? an evening dialogue with the nasa kepler mission leaders

Are We Alone? An Evening Dialogue with the NASA Kepler Mission Leaders
Are We Alone? An Evening Dialogue with the NASA Kepler Mission Leaders Bill Borucki, Natalie Batalha, Gibor Basri, and Andrew Fraknoi 6/30/2011, LHS Auditorium Once humanity realized that every star is a Sun like our own, we naturally wondered whether these other stars also have planets. And could those planets be earth-like enough to be homes to more or less intelligent beings like ourselves? Astronomers have only known about planets elsewhere for the last 15 years and finding other Earths is a challenge we are only now able to address. Today, NASA 's Kepler mission is discovering thousands of planets orbiting other stars and for the first time finding strong hints that other Earths (and not just other Jupiters and Saturns) really exist. This non-technical seminar features a panel of key investigators from the NASA Kepler Mission Science Team, who will share the latest mission discoveries, hints about what we might learn in the coming year, and their insights into the age-old question "Are we alone?" Panelists: • Bill Borucki, Principal Investigator, NASA Kepler Mission, Ames Research Center, Mountain View, CA • Natalie Batalha, Co-Investigator and Deputy Science Team Lead for the NASA Kepler Mission, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at San Jose State University, and lead author for the discovery of the first nearly Earth-size rocky planet. • Gibor Basri, Co-Investigator for NASA Kepler Mission and professor in the Department of Astronomy at University of California ...

Nasa spacecraft discovers planet orbiting 2 suns, just like star wars

NASA Spacecraft Discovers Planet Orbiting 2 Suns, Just Like Star Wars
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Kepler spacecraft has found a planet that orbits two stars just as Luke Skywalker's home world does in the Star Wars movies, NASA announced Thursday. Here is a artist illustration of what it looks like. An orange sun and a red sun that actually orbit each other define daytime on Kepler 16b, the 21st planet outside our own solar system discovered by planet hunter. The resemblance between the newest exo-planet and the fantasy world Tatooine envisioned by George Lucas ends on the horizon, said scientists at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View. NASA went on to say that the new planet was very much like our own Saturn. Who knows - could Luke Skywalker or anyone else be living on the new world? This just goes to show for real how fiction can be reality.

Kepler space telescope spots five earth-sized planets in our galaxy

Kepler space telescope spots five Earth-sized planets in our galaxy
NASA Finds Earth-size Planet Candidates in Habitable Zone, Six Planet System MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. -- NASA's Kepler mission has discovered its first Earth-size planet candidates and its first candidates in the habitable zone, a region where liquid water could exist on a planet's surface. Five of the potential planets are near Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of smaller, cooler stars than our sun. Candidates require follow-up observations to verify they are actual planets. Kepler also found six confirmed planets orbiting a sun-like star, Kepler-11. This is the largest group of transiting planets orbiting a single star yet discovered outside our solar system. "In one generation we have gone from extraterrestrial planets being a mainstay of science fiction, to the present, where Kepler has helped turn science fiction into today's reality," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. "These discoveries underscore the importance of NASA's science missions, which consistently increase understanding of our place in the cosmos." The discoveries are part of several hundred new planet candidates identified in new Kepler mission science data, released on Tuesday, Feb. 1. The findings increase the number of planet candidates identified by Kepler to-date to 1235. Of these, 68 are approximately Earth-size; 288 are super-Earth-size; 662 are Neptune-size; 165 are the size of Jupiter and 19 are larger than Jupiter. Of the 54 new planet candidates found in the habitable zone, five ...
