Here is the amount of time I had been speaking each language at the time I made the video; English-21 yrs, Polish-2 yrs, French-10 yrs, Catalan-3 yrs, Romanian-4 yrs, Portuguese-3 yrs, German-4 yrs, Dutch-2 months, Latin-4 months, Italian-11 yrs. Spanish is my native language and I learned English as a child when I moved to the United States. I remained bilingual until high school where I learned Italian and French. Then in college I took classes to learn Polish, German, Portuguese & Catalan. I only took one course for each language and afterwards I continued studying on my own with the help of friends that were native speakers of each language. During college I also taught myself Romanian by listening to music. I translated song lyrics and I started forming my own original sentences based on the structures I heard in the songs. Later on I also used a grammar book to learn full conjugations of all the different verbs. I studied Romanian for a year before I finally had a chance to practice it with native Romanian speakers. Besides Romanian, only Latin & Dutch have also been entirely self-taught with the help of music and literature. *I recently arrived Mexico where I am currently studying Nahuatl. *Very soon I would also like to learn Russian ... MIT News - February 23, 2012 To the chagrin of anyone who knows one of these languages but not the other, English and Japanese appear to be frustratingly different tongues governed by drastically different rules. And yet, under the surface, English and Japanese have deep similarities, as MIT linguist Shigeru Miyagawa argues in his new book, Case, Argument Structure, and Word Order, published this month in Routledge's "Leading Linguists" series. In turn, the similarities between English and Japanese underscore a larger point about human language, in Miyagawa's view: All its varieties exist within a relatively structured framework. Languages are different, but not radically different. Dating to the 1950s, in fact, much of MIT's linguistics program has aimed to identify the similar pathways that apparently unrelated languages take. "There is this very interesting tension in language between diversity and uniformity," says Miyagawa, the Kochi Prefecture-John Manjiro Professor of Japanese Language and Culture at MIT. "Human languages are diverse in stunning ways. Each one has some unique property that distinguishes it from 6500 or maybe 7000 other languages. But when you look as a linguist, you begin to notice that there are uniform properties shared by languages." The link between music, improvisation and language by polyglot stuart jay raj

In this clip, I take it out on a bit of a different tangent and link the topic of Language and Mind Mastery in with my other passion - Music and JAZZ! I will show you how to me, language and music are one in the same - that is, creating meanings with sounds. When learning languages, it's similar to developing a repertoire of 'riffs' when learning a language. The riffs get built into your muscle memory and then once they are part of you, you have freedom to then augment them, change them and alter them to your liking at a subconscious level, leaving your mind to just concentrate on painting meanings and your body following suit. The song I play in the beginning is a song I wrote for my daughter 'Star' (Her real name 'Janista', but as with all Thais, we use the one syllable nickname as her normal name). I wrote it while she was still in the womb - the song paints an image of what I imagined it was like in there, ready to come out into the the big wide world. The 'blues' song I play during the clip is called 'Stu's Funk' and was a regular we used to play in my Jazz Trio in Bangkok at Tokyo Joe's and the Foreign Correspondent's Club of Thailand with Drummer Dale Lee from Coffee Works, and Kenro Oshidari from the UN World Food Programme (WFP).
