Japan earthquake: helicopter aerial view video of giant tsunami waves

A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes on record slammed Japan's eastern coast on Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away ships, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control. Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture, or state, closest to the epicentre. Another 137 were confirmed killed, with 531 people missing. Police also said 544 people were injured. tsunami hit Japan's northeastern coastline Wednesday, NHK television reported, after a strong earthquake rocked the region nearly a year on from Japan's worst post-war natural disaster. The 10-centimetre (four inch) wave and 6.8 magnitude quake, which struck some 210 kilometres (130 miles) off the northern island of Hokkaido, prompted local authorities to issue an evacuation warning for coastal residents. Japan's meteorological agency had initially said the tsunami could be as high as 50 centimetres, but US monitors said there was no Pacific-wide tsunami threat. The warning comes after a 9.0-magnitude earthquake triggered a monster tsunami on March 11 last year that killed more than 19000 people and crippled Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, sparking the world's worst atomic accident in a generation. There were no reports of damage at nuclear facilities in the area affected by Wednesday's 6.8 quake, the Kyodo news agency said. The meteorological agency also warned the tsunami could reach the Kuril islands, off Hokkaido, which Russia has controlled since Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. On Sunday, Japan fell silent to remember last year's tragedy with tearful families gathering in towns and villages across the country's shattered northeast to remember those they lost as the towering waves smashed ashore. My daughter lives in Sendai, Japan and had just finished lunch at a restaurant on 3-11-11 when the 9.0 earthquake struck. The video was made by Hiroki, a 15 yo friend of the family. The video starts after the quake, which lasted about six minutes, had already been going on for a while and stops prior to the end of the quake. Tiffany pulled her 4 yo son across the table to help comfort him prior to the video starting. BEFORE COMMENTING about the fact that she should have gotten under the table, it should be noted that the people who live there rarely seek cover under the table or desk and she was following along with the locals since she had not lived in an EQ zone before. Also, Hiroki was holding his camera with his arms away from his body which caused the camera to shake more than the surroundings. The area where this video was taken was not affected by the tsunami.
