Advice for international students

International students are represented all across graduate programs at the University of Michigan. In addition to adjusting to the challenges of graduate school, international students often face the transition to a new culture. The International Center and the Rackham Graduate School provide a variety of support and guidance to ease this transition. Graduate students describe their experiences adjusting to a new culture, and offer advice on how to expand your network of friends, and to connect with the international community at the University of Michigan. In addition, students talk about the resources at the International Center and other good things for new international graduate students to know.

Number of foreign students in us continues to rise

This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http The number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States has increased for the fifth year. The Institute of International Education in New York released its annual "Open Doors" report in November. The report says a record high of more than seven hundred twenty thousand students from other countries studied in America during the last academic year. The number was five percent higher than the year before and almost one-third higher than ten years ago. There were big increases from China, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Iran and Venezuela. Almost twenty-two percent of international students were Chinese, with increases especially at the undergraduate level. Together, almost half of all international students came from China, India and South Korea. Peggy Blumenthal at the institute says Chinese students are now studying throughout the United States. Ten years ago, she says, students from China knew about only a small number of universities in the United States. But now they are being admitted to community colleges, liberal arts schools, and research universities across the country. Ms. Blumenthal suggests one reason for the increase is a lack of space in Chinese colleges for everyone who wants an education. Wesleyan University welcomed 87 international students to campus Aug. 28-31, 2011. The students participated in International StudentOrientation. This program allows international students to recover from travel, often from across the globe. ISO also offers sessions that address health and medical insurance issues, programs about cultural adaptation, weather adjustment, and liberal arts education, as well as informational sessions about US systems that many international students are not familiar with.

Culture shock - international students in the united states

Foreign students share their perceptions of their experiences in the US as each of them (plus one specialist in cross-cultural relations and a few American Students) is interviewed about living and studying in a new culture. These 100 or so students are roughly a part of 3000 international students that study, work, play, and explore at North Carolina State University. This new group represents the Spring Group, consisting of roughly 140 or so. Head Coach David Bailiff and the Rice Owl football team hosted a clinic for international students at Rice University. Many of the students had never seen American football so it was a special treat learning how to tailgate, punt, pass and catch. The event is used to promote the upcoming football season and get the students ready for kickoff.

Rwth international - student organisations (3)

In additional to one's course of study, no higher education experience would be complete without a social component! International students at the RWTH become part of a large social network of student-led organizations. INCAS, for example, is an organization dedicated to the building of cultural bridges between international and German students. In addition to offering a wide range of cultural events, the organization also coordinates excursions to various cities in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. AEGEE, the European student forum, sponsors the ERASMUS Tutoring Program, helping incoming students to adjust to their new university and surroundings. The AV is an elected body that represents foreign student at the RWTH. Among its offerings, this group provides free legal advice on issues relevant to international students (for example, those related to immigration and finding a job). Today, we launch International Education Week with the release of the 2010 Open Doors annual report on international student mobility. International education is an economic and strategic imperative for the United States. The Open Doors report reaffirms America as the preferred destination for international students looking for an outstanding education.
