Marvel comics creates superhero for hearing impaired boy

Never underestimate how crafty moms can be. Four-year-old Anthony Smith of Salem, New Hampshire, was born with hearing abnormalities that left him deaf in one ear and with limited hearing in the other. When he told his mom he didn't want to wear the hearing device he calls "blue ear" because superheroes don't need hearing aids, his mom turned to Marvel comics for help. Amazingly, Marvel responded. The company sent over a Hawkeye comic, which stars a character featured in "The Avengers," who lost his hearing. Marvel took it a step further by creating a custom comic for Anthony about a superhero called Blue Ear who does in fact wear a hearing aid. The cover of the comic reads, "When danger makes a sound, the Blue Ear answers the call. Anthony Smith is Blue Ear." Needless to say, problem solved. 'is silence golden' - deaf and hearing impaired exhibition, 2011

2011's exhibition was called 'Is Silence Golden' and had an open theme with no size limit. Nine TLC students were involved in this exhibition and we had a total of 42 pieces of artwork on display ranging from charcoal drawings to paintings, photography, prints and stone sculpture. The opening night was held on Tuesday 6th December and was attended by around 30 people. During the remainder of the exhibition (7th-10th December), approximately 20 people came through each day. During the exhibition we had a 'People's Choice Award' where people could vote for their favourite artwork in the exhibition. Fiona Langford's 'The gazing owl' took out first prize and Erina Carroll's pastel drawing 'Give me a hug' came second. While waiting for their daddy at the car repair shop, Mom explained that Daddy's car broke down and needed to be fixed. (The oldest asked if it needed batteries, because that's what's wrong when their toys stop working!) I began filming when Daddy got in the car and the boys began to tell them about what they saw in the garage. Oh, and we were near an airport, which will help you understand context. That, and the boys are obsessed with transportation! I must add that our boys had NO language just six months ago when we adopted them. They have flourished with ASL as their first language. The older boy on the left is deaf. The younger boy on the right (with the loose seatbelt...thanks for pointing that out. Consider it fixed!) is mostly hearing/a little hard-of-hearing. I pray this inspires parents with deaf kids to sign with them! Signing will NOT hinder their speech, but will vastly improve their ability to learn. Signing gives them a way to express themselves and gives YOU a way to truly know them. Bless all of you who have watched so far!
