Oh the jobs (debt?) you'll create!

Oh The Jobs (Debt?) You'll Create!
Hobbs is a fictional city whose mayor has a very real problem: How will he implement his scheme to bring in good clean health care jobs when every other American city is trying to do the same? How far will he go to nab those fabled 'medical tourists?' And what will this medical arms race do to our insurance premiums and taxes? At the crossroads of our big debate about job growth and our big debate about healthcare debt, the public radio show Marketplace brings this animated short inspired by Dr Suess and composed by senior health care reporter Gregory Warner. Learn how local politicians seeking job growth may encourage hospital over-expansion, driving up our insurance premiums and taxes and even creating a health care jobs bubble. New york hospitals saddle uninsured patients with massive debt despite millions in govt aid

New York Hospitals Saddle Uninsured Patients With Massive Debt Despite Millions in Govt Aid
democracynow.org — As the ranks of the uninsured continue to rise, a major new study has found that most New York medical centers are violating rules intended to help patients who are uninsured and cannot afford healthcare. Two-thirds of hospitals studied either violated the law, failed to comply with state guidelines or created additional barriers to financial assistance, despite receiving a combined total of more than $463 million from the state's Indigent Care Pool. We're joined by three guests: Elisabeth Benjamin of the Community Service Society of New York, which conducted the two-year study; Jessica Curtis, the Hospital Accountability Project director at Community Catalyst, who says the problem is not unique to New York; and Hope Rubel, an uninsured patient who was sued some $88000 in hospital bills by a hospital that took in more than $50 million in aid that same year. "[It] infuriated me that all this money is sitting in these hospitals' bank accounts," Rubel says. The human cost of EU-mandated austerity in Greece is being felt like never before. Cuts and slashes in spending have left hospitals short of medicine, workers short of cash and many ill Greeks out of luck. Paul Ryan: President's Health Care Law Empowers 15 Bureaucrats. We Empower 50 Million Seniors.
House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan appeared on Fox News Sunday on March 25th, 2012 to discuss the Path to Prosperity budget and the choice of two futures America faces. To learn more: prosperity.budget.house.gov Attacking Poverty by Expanding Opportunity Is the goal to treat the symptoms of poverty or to attack the root causes of poverty? We're advancing welfare reform that gets people onto lives of self-sufficiency, that's why we couple this with job training programs and work requirements. We think we ought to help get people out of the cycle of poverty. Unfortunately, the President's agenda creates more of a dependent culture, more people stuck in poverty because it denies the idea of upward mobility. This is a critical difference. We're working to repair the safety net and help people get back on their feet. Reforming Medicaid Medicaid is already going bankrupt. Medicaid is already a program that so many doctors won't even take anymore because of its federal rules, regulations and mandates. Let's block grant Medicaid back to the states. Allow states to customize this benefit to meet the particular needs of their populations. Yes, it will still grow under the reforms we're talking about, but we will free the states to experiment and customize this benefit to the needs of their population. Advancing State-Based Solutions All the answers don't lie in Washington. The genius of America does not lie in our bureaucracies in Washington. Government closer to you is ...

Knowledge@asb - us debt crisis: how to avert the next financial collapse

Knowledge@ASB - US Debt Crisis: How to Avert the Next Financial Collapse
Is the US economy already bankrupt? The world's largest economy reached its statutory debt limit last month. The US Congress must raise the US$14.3 trillion debt ceiling by 2 August 2011 to avoid the government defaulting on its loans. Renowned economist Larry Kotlikoff, a professor at Boston University, insists the US was broke long before the global financial crisis. US governments have been disguising the real level of national debt for decades, claims Kotlikoff who tips an imminent meltdown in the US bond market and skyrocketing inflation. Averting a future financial collapse requires numerous reforms, he suggests, including a switch from covert "trust me" banking to a new transparent system.

Authors@Google: David Graeber, DEBT: The First 5000 Years
DEBT: The First 5000 Years While the "national debt" has been the concern du jour of many economists, commentators and politicians, little attention is ever paid to the historical significance of debt. For thousands of years, the struggle between rich and poor has largely taken the form of conflicts between creditors and debtors—of arguments about the rights and wrongs of interest payments, debt peonage, amnesty, repossession, restitution, the sequestering of sheep, the seizing of vineyards, and the selling of debtors' children into slavery. By the same token, for the past five thousand years, popular insurrections have begun the same way: with the ritual destruction of debt records—tablets, papyri, ledgers; whatever form they might have taken in any particular time and place. Enter anthropologist David Graeber's Debt: The First 5000 Years (July, ISBN 978-1-933633-86-2), which uses these struggles to show that the history of debt is also a history of morality and culture. In the throes of the recent economic crisis, with the very defining institutions of capitalism crumbling, surveys showed that an overwhelming majority of Americans felt that the country's banks should not be rescued—whatever the economic consequences—but that ordinary citizens stuck with bad mortgages should be bailed out. The notion of morality as a matter of paying one's debts runs deeper in the United States than in almost any other country. Beginning with a sharp critique of economics (which since ...

"banned" us/china ron paul 2012 commercial (unofficial)

A new television ad about the US national debt produced by Citizens Against Government Waste [and then edited by youtubers] has been deemed "too controversial" by major networks including ABC, A&E and The History Channel and will not be shown on those channels. The commercial is a homage to a 1986 ad that was entitled "The Deficit Trials" that was also banned by the major networks. Apparently telling the truth about the national debt is a little too "hot" for the major networks to handle. But perhaps it is time to tell the American people the truth. In 1986, the US national debt was around 2 trillion dollars. Today, it is rapidly approaching 14 trillion dollars. The American Dream is being ripped apart right in front of our eyes, but apparently some of the major networks don't want the American people to really understand what is going on. The truth is that the ad does not even have anything in it that should be offensive. The commercial is set in the year 2030, and the main character is a Chinese professor that is seen lecturing his students on the fall of great empires. As images of the United States are shown on a screen behind him, the Chinese professor tells his students the following about the behavior of great empires: "They all make the same mistakes. Turning their backs on the principles that made them great. America tried to spend and tax itself out of a great recession. Enormous so-called "stimulus" spending, massive changes to health care, government takeover ...

Jc comments on the return of debtor's prison

JC Comments on the Return of Debtor's Prison
Membership site now open: retirecheap.tv I read this Yahoo article dated Mon, Apr 23, 2012 and I thought, "You've got to be joking!" Although the US abolished debtors' prisons in the 1830s, more than a third of US states allow the police to haul people in who don't pay all manner of debts, from bills for health care services to credit card and auto loans. Under the law, debtors aren't arrested for nonpayment, but rather for failing to respond to court hearings, pay legal fines, or otherwise showing "contempt of court" in connection with a creditor lawsuit. Some states also apply "poverty penalties," including late fees, payment plan fees, and interest when people are unable to pay all their debts at once. Alabama charges a 30 percent collection fee, for instance, while Florida allows private debt collectors to add a 40 percent surcharge on the original debt. Some Florida counties also use so-called collection courts, where debtors can be jailed but have no right to a public defender. When did we start letting this happen to people? There must be a better way. This was abolished for a good reason. As I say, "There's always an option!" Stunning finding: president's health law creates $17 trillion in unfunded financial obligations

Stunning Finding: President's Health Law Creates $17 Trillion In Unfunded Financial Obligations
WASHINGTON, March 29--On the Senate floor today, Ranking Member Sessions announced that a new Budget Committee analysis has found that the long-term, unfunded liabilities associated with President Obama's health care law will reach $17 trillion. The Committee's analysis is based on the Obama Administration's own numbers as well as those from the Congressional Budget Office. It is a modest, conservative estimate and yet is still more than double that of Social Security. At a "bipartisan fiscal responsibility summit" in 2009, President Obama's then-OMB Director, Peter Orszag, stated: "To my fellow budget hawks in this room and in the rest of the country, let me be very clear: Health care reform is entitlement reform. The path to fiscal responsibility must run directly through health care." But despite this emphatic statement, the nation's unfunded liabilities--money we must spend but for which there is no source of funds set aside--increased from $65 trillion to $82 trillion since the health law was passed. To view a graph depicting the increase in unfunded obligations brought on by the law, please click here: 1.usa.gov

Obamacare: broken promises

Obamacare: Broken Promises
During the debate over Obamacare, Democrats and the president claimed that the law would lower health care costs, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, protect Medicare, and allow Americans to keep their health care plans. Two years later, it's clear that not one of those promises will be kept. Instead, the health care law will drive up families' premiums by more than $2000, force cash-strapped state governments to shoulder more than $100 billion in new Medicaid costs, take more than half a trillion dollars from Medicare, and encourage employers to drop health care coverage for up to 35 million Americans. And far from creating jobs, the health care law will actually result in 800000 fewer jobs over the next decade. It's time to repeal Obamacare and replace it with commonsense, step-by-step reforms that will actually lower costs.

Clip from November 16, 2010, The Rachel Maddow Show where Rachel and crew play "Pin The Debt On The Donkey" and admonishes the press and public to "watch what the Republics do, not what the say" when it comes to their cynical phony fiscal policy. Rachel completely debunks the myth of Republicans trying to cynically portray themselves as the "party of fiscal responsibility" by examining their irresponsible tax cuts and efforts to repeal health care legislation (aka "Obamacare"), which, together with other Republican proposals, will increase the deficit and debt by $1 trillion dollars, rather than reduce it.

Paul ryan, financial calamity in 2015, $5 gallon gas & more: weekly news wrap-up

Paul Ryan, Financial Calamity in 2015, $5 Gallon Gas & More: Weekly News Wrap-Up
usawatchdog.com - Congressman Paul Ryan got his budget passed this week in the House of Representatives with more than $5 trillion in spending cuts over the next ten years. Can it pass the Senate where the Democrats are in control? Probably not, and that means we are back to the fight of spending reductions by Republicans and tax increases by the Democrats. It's election year politics at its finest. The budget proposed by President Obama was unanimously defeated in the House. The Supreme Court heard the case of Obama Care this week. It will not be decided until summer, but conservative judges picked apart the individual mandate where Americans who do not purchase healthcare insurance are taxed or fined for not doing it. The Wall Street Journal is reporting the Federal Reserve bought a whopping 61% of our nation's debt last year. Former big buyers of Treasuries, China and Japan, are shunning US debt. Maybe that's why Ben Bernanke is trashing gold and questions about a gold standard. The Fed Chief said, this week, there are "problems with a gold standard." You mean there are no problems with printing lots of cash to buy debt and live beyond our means? Think $4 a gallon gasoline national average, and many experts say they expect an average $5 a gallon this year. Housing prices fell again according to the latest Case-Shiller report. The MSM spun this story and said it was not that bad. But the report said it was that bad--the worst report in the current housing slump. Home ...

Does government have a revenue or spending problem?

Does Government Have a Revenue or Spending Problem?
Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co People say the government has a debt problem. Debt is caused by deficits, which is the difference between what the government collects in tax revenue and the amount of government spending. Every time the government runs a deficit, the government debt increases. So what's to blame: too much spending, or too little tax revenue? Economics professor Antony Davies examines the data and concludes that the root cause of the debt is too much government spending.

America's shame--our debt to service members is still shamefully unpaid
PLEASE READ THIS VIDEO DESCRIPTION. When I watch this, I'm speechless, and tearful. This video is not mine--I found it elsewhere, and don't know the creator or copyright owners. ***YOUTUBE: PLEASE DON'T TAKE THE VIDEO OR SOUNDTRACK DOWN. I have NOT submitted it for revenue sharing, but simply as a patriotic public service. Please respect that and leave the video up.*** Some military action is both abhorrent and necessary--I'm both old and young enough to know that. But we in modern America have forgotten the cost. In our video-game, media-saturated, narcissistic society of today, war has become just another policy football, just another budget wrangle. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, both businesses and the government urged civilians to conserve, to recycle, to contribute money (in taxes and war bonds), and to grow their own food. When the World Trade Centers were leveled, the government told us to go about our business, and that the most patriotic thing we could do was go out and consume more. My father was a marine in Vietnam, my uncle one in Korea, but they've never talked much about it. But after having two young daughters, and then losing one of my favorite students during his first month in Baghdad, war has become very personal for me. This video perfectly conveys one of the greatest costs of war--the separation of families. Particularly of parents and young children, who need their parent more at that time than at any other time of life. War is necessary at times ...

Economists like Steve Keen support debt jubilees, others like Lew Rockwell and Ron Paul support sound money as the solution, but what about something more radical? What about getting grid of money, profit and competition all together? Well, Peter Joseph, author of the Zeitgeist series, believes that society can evolve to do just that. Monsanto bio-financial terroristic threatening (mirror)

MONSANTO BIO-FINANCIAL TERRORISTIC THREATENING (mirror)
There has never been ANY research on the health risks of GMO products on humans while all tests on animals have had disastrous results yet Monsanto is using US politicians along with private military organizations like Blackwater/Xe to force fascist policies on the global population as a whole. Monsanto is also FORCING a fiat-currency-style of debt enslavement upon countries that Monsanto FORCES to use their terminator seeds. WikiLeaks exposes the US State Department threat of France & EU for banning Monsanto's GMO terminator seeds. This is the United States' version of "The Final Solution," first they force people to eat unhealthy food which makes them sick, then they cut people off from access to adequate health care AND natural remedies from raw food sources, vitamins and supplements, and then they separate people from the digital money supply so that they can't take care of themselves. And, to top it all off, Michael Taylor, a former lawyer for Monsanto, is now Obama's Food Safety Tzar!

Mic check: minnesotans confront wells fargo ceo john stumpf about "chains of debt"

Mic Check: Minnesotans confront Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf about
Minutes into Wells Fargo Chairman of the Board & CEO John Stumpf's talk at the Carlson School of Management's "First Tuesday" luncheon, a group of about 10 protesters at a table stood up and began yelling, waving a banner that said "Tales of Wells Fargo" decrying the bank's lending policies. Police escorted the group outside, where about 50 union members, students and community activists were staging a demonstration.SEIU Local 284, which co-sponsored the protest, represents school and child care workers. Outside, students, educators, homeowners and labor activists rallied near the University of Minnesota's McNamara Alumni Center to tell Wells Fargo CEO Jon Stumpf to change policies trapping Minnesotans under "chains of debt." "Many in our community and our country rightfully believe that Wells Fargo and the other powerful, dominant banks have done much harm to our economy, and our future and the future of our children. We suffer under staggering debt while the real wages of working families have been stagnant for a generation," said Carol Neiters, Executive Director of SEIU Local 284. Participants in the rally said that they and other community groups had attempted to schedule a meeting with Wells Fargo executives but been rebuffed. They want the bank to discuss proposals for the bank to adopt policies in the public interest including lower interest rates on student loans, underwrite interest and fee free on K-12 public education borrowing, stop home foreclosures ...

Tim geithner to paul ryan: "we don't have a definitive solution... we just don't like yours"

Tim Geithner to Paul Ryan:
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on the Obama Administration's definition of leadership. Congressman Paul Ryan: Let's show Slide 8. I know you didn't necessarily want to see this chart. The red is the status quo, that's the baseline we're on. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner: You could have taken it to 3000 or 4000... Congressman Paul Ryan: Yeah, right. We cut it off at the end of the century because the economy, according to the CBO, shuts down in 2027 on this path. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner: I like this chart; I looked at this chart yesterday. You're talking about I think more than half a century. But if you look at the gap between us— Congressman Paul Ryan: I understand the gap. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner: —between 10 and 20, it's a pretty small gap. In that gap though—that 10 to 20 gap, which is all we're debating today—is a gap where you're achieving that slightly diminished path. Congressman Paul Ryan: Here's the point, if you'll allow me. This is your time, so we'll just take a long time. Here's the point. Leaders are supposed to fix problems. We have a $99.4 trillion unfunded liability. Our government is making promises to Americans that it has no way of accounting for. And so you're saying yeah, we're stabilizing it but we're not fixing it in the long run. That means we're just going to keep lying to people. We're going to keep all these empty promises going. So what we're saying is, in order to avert a debt crisis—you're the Treasury Secretary, of ...
