A coalition of advocacy groups has begun a week of intensive protests against the latest attack on the free and open internet, The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA). The draconian legislation would force companies to ignore existing privacy laws and share information with the federal government. At the forefront of the coalition's protest efforts is a Twitter takeover, whereby users are being asked to use the hashtags #CongressTMI and #CISPA in an attempt to create the same level of publicity that was generated during the height of the protests against The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) earlier this year. The organizations are pushing ahead with a mass distribution of letters and articles to raise awareness of the implications of CISPA, which is sponsored by Michigan Republican Mike Rogers. The groups do not plan on conducting any "blackouts", shutting down their websites as happened during the SOPA protests. Instead they will focus on informational campaigns aiming to teach people about all the cybersecurity bills currently in Congress. The revelation that Facebook is supporting the legislation has also raised awareness of the issue ahead of the protests. As is now the norm in Greece, peaceful protest are now broken up by Police brutality. The weapon of choice for the Greek police is tear gas and it is a weapon they like. It is a shame that people's personalities can be transformed by a uniform. I wonder if the police would act this way in civilian clothing. Imaging the police are wearing civilian clothing when you watch this video, would you think it is normal behaviour in a civilised society. The police need to realise that they are animating the power of the state and that without the uniform they are just like eveyrone else. The riot police pushing the Red Cross with his riot shield as they are treating an injured protester/stander by is a case in point. Like I said, sadly this scenes are now the norm in Greece and this kind of activity is deliveratly designed to deter people from wanting to voice their objections in a supposedly free and democratic society. In 1933, Retired Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler was approached by wealthy industrialists and bankers who were plotting to create a fascist veterans' organization called the "American Liberty League" and use it in a coup d'état to overthrow United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with Butler as leader of that organization. In 1934 Butler testified to the McCormack--Dickstein Congressional committee on these claims. In the opinion of the committee, these allegations were credible. One of the purported plotters, Gerald MacGuire, vehemently denied any such plot. In their report, the Congressional committee stated that it was able to confirm Butler's statements other than the proposal from MacGuire which it considered more or less confirmed by MacGuire's European reports.
