Structural geology research with dr. randy merrett

Structural Geology Research with Dr. Randy Merrett
Dr. Randy Merrett is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas. Dr. Marrett's research concentrates on deformation processes in the upper continental crust where folds, faults, and opening-mode fractures are the most important products. This work is applicable to a wide range of human concerns such as natural hazards (eg, earthquakes, volcanoes) and the flow of fluids through rock (eg, hydrocarbons, water, contaminants). Some common themes that relate his disparate interests are quantitative field observations and analysis, especially using techniques that address spatial and size scaling of structures. Dr. Marrett currently has on-going projects that address active faulting and geyser eruption patterns in the Central Andes of Argentina and Chile, detachment folding and curved orogenic belt development in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Mexico, and opening-mode fracturing in numerous areas.

Science Gangbang Call - NephilimFree Says Geologists are Idiots
This is the next part of the infamous 12+ hour call involving several people from YouTube and NephilimFree. This is roughly 8-9 minutes after the previous segment, when NephilimFree ragequit. Note that he came back all on his own. We had moved onto a slightly different subject, but without even finding out what was going on, he marches in, demands to ask his question, and butchers it! (fish from amphibians???) This talk moves into geology, and that's when I point out that I know a geologist who was listening to the call. She will arrive in the next segment. Stories about science with dr. leon long

Stories about Science with Dr. Leon Long
Dr. Leon Long is a professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas. Dr. Long's research is in isotope geology, especially to use naturally occurring radioactivity and its daughter products as a geologic clock (eg, to date the crystallization of a magma), and as a geochemical tracer (eg, to characterize the source rock whose melting produced the magma). Dr. Long is interested in applying the Rb-Sr isotopic age method to clay minerals, one possibility being to date when weathering had produced an ancient soil zone.

Smithsonian geologist puts Eyjafjallajökull eruption in perspective
Eyjafjallajökull's eruption may be a hassle if you had any transatlantic flights planned this summer. For scientists, however, volcanic eruptions are the only way they can obtain samples from deep within the Earth to learn more about our planet, its formation, and its ongoing evolution. How long will this eruption last? How does it compare to other volcanoes around the world and throughout history? Smithsonian Geologist Liz Cottrell helps put this recent eruption into perspective.

Harvard geology field trip to italy, 2010

Harvard Geology Field Trip to Italy, 2010
I had the pleasure of traveling to Italy with a Harvard Undergraduate course, called Sedimentary Stratigraphy, which I have been auditing. I went along in order to film the trip for the Harvard Earth and Planetary Science Department. Check out the resulting vid! Some cool tidbits: The music for the video was made by a local geologist and our field guide. The first song is actually composed "by the earth." Different pieces of scientific data from the period when the dinosaurs went extinct were assigned different instruments. For example, the asteroid impact that (most likely) killed the dinosaurs caused a huge spike in the rare element Iridium. That means that the rocks that were deposited at the time of the asteroid impact had an abnormally high amount of iridium in them. The iridium abundance in the rocks can be plotted on a graph. In the song, bells were assigned to iridium abundance, so at the point in the song where you here a big crash of bells, that is actually the iridium spike caused by asteroid impact! Pretty cool, huh? Its called "geophonics." I'd like to especially thank The Earth and Planetary Science department, and the teaching staff of the EPS 182: Sedimentary Stratigraphy course (Ryan and Francis) for letting me come along.

Explosive geological evidence for creation (creation 101, part 2) - bruce malone

Explosive Geological Evidence For Creation (Creation 101, Part 2) - Bruce Malone
This talk was given to over 300 high school and college students at a Myth Busters Youth Rally in Mt. Pleasant, IN. After a brief overview of the scientific support for the creation model, this lecture explains how rapidly geological change can happen. A recent world restructuring flood explains the geology of our planet far better than slow processes over millions of years. This flood is the key to understanding all historical sciences including geology, paleontology, and anthropology. Visit Malone's website at www.searchforthetruth.net Biography Bruce Malone gave his life to Christ over 20 years ago, as the Lord miraculously preserved him through a close call with death. Since that time Bruce has looked for a deeper purpose in life and realized that rejection of Biblical truth, justified by belief in evolution, is the acid which is eating away at the moral foundation of our culture. Bruce spent 27 years working as a research leader for the Dow Chemical Corporation, has a degree chemical engineering, and is responsible for key innovations which have resulted in 18 patents. But his passion is sharing the relevance and evidence for creation, so he retired early to become full time Director of Search for the Truth Ministries. Bruce has spoken extensively at Colleges and Charities on four continents. Bruce brings science alive through stories and demonstrations, showing that Biblical creation is the most rational explanation for the world around us. The purpose of both his ...

Science Nation - Antarctica Rocks!
Geologist John Goodge looks for clues about Antarctica's past in the two percent of the continent that is not covered in ice! The University of Minnesota, Duluth professor studies rocks that help provide evidence about how this desolate continent has formed and changed over time. He also hopes to get a better idea of what the Earth looked like long before the seven continents we have now. Goodge and his colleagues are supported by the US Antarctic Program, which is managed by the National Science Foundation. In late 2010 and early 2011, he spent several weeks in the field with other scientists, visiting a dozen sites in Antarctica, along 1200 miles of mountains. They collected 2500 pounds of rocks, which are now being analyzed back in the states.

Moonfaker: exhibit d: critique #07: geologists

MoonFaker: Exhibit D: Critique #07: Geologists
Claim #9. Only a handful of pro-NASA geologists have ever looked at NASA's moon rocks. In Exhibit D Part 4 - 5:00 Jarrah says, "Out of all the thousands and thousands of geologists within the scientific community, only a tiny handful has physically studied the lunar material. As space.com reported on May 23rd, 2000, about 40 to 50 scientists are still investigating the moon rocks." Jarrah quotes an article by geologist, Callum McAllister. The operative word is "still." It doesn't say only 50 scientists have ever studied the moon rocks over the past 40 years. That's a ridiculous statement. For the record, space.com reported in July 1999 that 60 scientists were STILL studying Nasa's moon rocks. Actually, the first 48 rocks returned by Apollo 11 alone were studied by 142 independent labs worldwide. And between 1970 and 1975, 379 independent scientists and research labs presented reports at the LPSC on NASA's moon rocks. Today, the JSC curate sends out 400 samples annually. Geology Field Lecture
Great lecture by Dr. Andrew Meigs of Oregon State University at Pleasant Valley, Nevada. The fault scarp with several meters of offset is depicted in the background and zoomed in upon at ~2:40. Seismologist John Nabelek of COAS on the right contributes some knowledgeable questions/clarification. Although not on this video segment, i did bring up the issue of a fault step from one fault system to another. Other research has shown that a step over 5km often ceases earthquake rupture and this area MAY exceed that general trend (which is pretty cool).

It came from the desert, amiga - part 1 - overlooked oldies

It Came From the Desert, Amiga - Part 1 - Overlooked Oldies
It Came From the Desert is a sort of detective style game inspired by horror B-movies where you play a geologist who investigates some strange meteorites that have something to do with impossibly mutated ants. There are action sequences mixed in with the dialogue and gathering of clues and evidence. I stumble a bit through this one since I went in without much knowledge of what to expect. I was thinking it was more of an actiony shooter thingy, but I enjoyed it and will probably continue it later. It's quite different from most games I've played. Another example of a retro game that doesn't fit into any pigeon holes. This is a request by Hiffinn and TheUngulable on my 128 subscriber special. It Came From The Desert on Moby Games: www.mobygames.com "Overlooked Oldies" is a series of let's play videos of retro games that I somehow never played back in the day.
