Looking to Robots and Other Technology to Improve Health Care
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http An organization called the World Future Society publishes a yearly report about how technology, the economy and society are influencing the world. Tim Mack heads the World Future Society. He says medicine is one area of growth. Mr. Mack says the fields of nanotechnology, biotechnology and information technology are working together to create new ways to help patients. These include better ways to provide medicine and identify disease without invasive operations. Mr. Mack also says developments in artificial intelligence could lead to a future where disabled patients could be cared for by a voice-activated robot. The World Future Society also publishes The Futurist magazine. Every year it examines developments in technology and other areas to predict the future. The magazine released the top ten predictions from the Outlook 2011 report. Several of the predictions dealt with technology. The report said Internet search engines will soon include both text and spoken results. It said television broadcasts and other recordings could be gathered using programs developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis.Outlook 2011 also examined refuse collection. It said industrial nations will send much more waste to developing countries. This will cause protests in those countries. In about fifteen years, developing countries will stop accepting foreign waste. This will ...

For more information about Prospero and swarm robotics in farming visit www.DorhoutRD.com or see the featured article about Prospero in the 2012 January/February issue of ROBOT Magazine. Script: Food Man's most basic need Throughout the ages men have strived to produce more and better food for growing populations. More land Better tools Improved techniques And technological advances However, all this progress has had one common element that has not changed. Man Man has always been at the center of food production and has now become the limiting factor. For 10000 years, the primary focus of technological advancement has always been increasing the productivity and safety of the operator. But these incremental improvements will soon be outpaced by the exponential population increase that we are experiencing. Sometime in the near future, the population will exceed our ability to provide food for all of earth's inhabitants. (A Transition: A new vision for farming) What we need is a paradigm shift on a scale of the transition from hunting and gathering to an agrarian society. A complete reboot that will change our conception of what agriculture is. (The New Solution:) This new system will be developed in four phases: Phase One: Planter Phase Two: Tender Phase Three: Harvester Phase Four: Integration ...

Intelligence for the humanoid robot asimo: a synthetic appro

Intelligence for the Humanoid Robot ASIMO: A Synthetic Appro
Intelligence for the Humanoid Robot ASIMO: A Synthetic Approach to Understanding Principles of Processing in the Brain. I would like to welcome you to the web site of the Honda Research Institute Europe (HRI-EU). The Honda Research Institute Europe is one of three basic research units Honda inaugurated in a bold and foresighted move in 2003. It is our mission to contribute to the future of our society and thereby to the future of Honda by pursuing emerging technologies. By translating principles of biological information processing systems into unique and innovative technology, the team at the Honda Research Institute Europe strives towards becoming the Centre of Excellence for Intelligent Systems Research in Honda. The human brain demonstrates that robustness, functional autonomy and cognition in unconstrained environments are possible. Hence, an understanding of the brain is the most promising way towards the creation of intelligent systems. In order to understand the brain, we follow an "analysis through synthesis" philosophy. We set the architectural and processing constraints for self-assembly through evolution and learning of the artificial system in interaction with the environment. To progress from pre-programmed skills to learnt and thereby actively acquired behaviour provides us with the key for a new class of systems: systems whose architecture and dynamics provide the basis for brain-like intelligence. I hope you enjoy this concise introduction to the work of ...

Robots and machines

robots and machines
This video shows some examples of present-day automated manufacturing. More and more work will be done by machines and robots. The problem today is that only a few people benefit from the use of technology and money. But the majority of people in developed and developing countries are forced to work a great deal to avoid unemployment and to make a living. Increasing economic inequality causes tension in society, resulting in crime, violence and wars. Extrapolating this trend into the future, it is evident that we need a systematic change so that society as a whole will profit from increased automation. See The Venus Project for more information.

Better known for its status as a car-maker, the company sees opportunity in aged and healthcare sectors. With nearly one in four Japanese now aged 65 or over, and the figure expected to reach 40 percent by 2050, the nursing and care industry is seeing a corresponding increase in demand. Toyota has teamed up with Fujita Health University in hopes of capitalizing on the opportunities presented by Japan's ageing society. Their new range of robots are designed to help the elderly and infirm. Unable to fully use his right leg himself, Professor Eiichi Saito of Fujita Health University demonstrated the "Independent Walk Assist" robot - attached to his right leg - along with a hip sensor and a shoulder sensor connected to a backpack. The attachment allowed him to walk, sit and move without worrying about locking his leg to walk. After walking, sitting and climbing stairs, Saito told an audience that he can see a time when these types of robots will be a part of people's everyday lives. [Professor Eiichi Saito, Fuhita Health University]: "There is a future that is undeniable, of a rapidly aging society. In order to change this future into a rich and fulfilling one, these Partner Robots will become necessary." Panasonic and many other companies showcase sophisticated robots for the ill and elderly at the Home Care and Rehabilitation Exhibition in Tokyo. Panasonic says its new hair-washing robot may look like a glorified barber's chair, but it has been developed to replicate the dexterous touch of a human who might otherwise be employed to wash the hair of the elderly or infirm. Its creators say the machine features up-to-date robotic technologies to replace human care-givers without degrading the quality of service. [Tohru Nakamura, Developer at Panasonic]: "Using robotic hand technology and 24 robotic fingers, this robot can wash the hair of the elderly or handicapped in a way human hands do in order to support them to have better daily lives." Upgraded from its 16-fingered version, the machine now features 24 robotic fingers to shampoo, massage and rinse in about three minutes. Conditioning and a blow-dry add another five minutes to the process. Nakamura says Japan's rapidly ageing society supports a healthy market in care-giving robot technologies. A world congress and human rights for robots - part 1 of 2

A World Congress And Human Rights For Robots - Part 1 of 2
This is conditioning for the transhumanist agenda, blurring the line between humans and machines, as the elite prepare to merge the two in reality. In the movie the robot is an individual who gradually becomes more like a human being. First he opens a bank account (is that the most human trait?) then he has an upgrade which allows human-like movement of his facial features, then he starts wearing clothes. Later he is given a human-like outer appearance and then he designs himself a central nervous system, and various artificial organs which allow him to become more human-like - and they also allow humans to become more robot-like. Then he falls in love with Portia - the descendant of his original "masters". (It was suggested earlier on that Portia's grandmother actually fell in love with the far less human-like "Andrew".) And finally he alters himself to allow him to age, and to die, as seen in part 2 - www.youtube.com In trying to acquire the right to call himself a human being, and to marry another human being, he is told that "society can tolerate an immortal robot but we will never tolerate an immortal human. It arouses too much jealousy, too much anger." Jumping further into the future (see part 2) just seconds after "Andrew" dies, he succeeds in acquiring human rights for himself, by being categorised as a human being. Society did not therefore have to tolerate an immortal human being. The President of the World Congress refers to "Andrew" first as a robot, and then ...

Privacy and robots

Privacy and Robots
Ethics@Noon: M. Ryan Calo Hosted by Bown H. McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society January 21, 2011 It is not hard to imagine why robots raise privacy concerns. Practically by definition, robots are equipped with the ability to sense, process, and record the world around them. Robots can go places humans cannot go, see things humans cannot see. Robots are, first and foremost, a human instrument. And after industrial manufacturing, the principle use to which we've put that instrument has been surveillance. Yet increasing the power to observe is just one of ways in which robots may implicate privacy within the next decade. This chapter breaks the effects of robots on privacy into three categories — direct surveillance, increased access, and social meaning — with the goal of introducing the reader to a wide variety of issues. Where possible, the chapter points toward ways in which we might mitigate or redress the potential impact of robots on privacy, but acknowledges that in some cases redress will be difficult under the current state of privacy law. Ryan Calo is the Director of Stanford's Consumer Privacy Project at the Center for Internet & Society. Prior to joining the law school in 2008, Calo was an associate at Covington & Burling, LLP, where he advised companies on issues of data security, privacy, and telecommunications. Calo researches and presents on the intersection of law and technology. His work has appeared in the New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle ...

27c3: from robot to robot

27c3: From robot to robot
Speaker: Robert Spanton Restoring creativity in school pupils using robotics Today, hacking is reserved for the microscopic fraction of the population who manage to shake themselves free of the suppressive education regime. Student Robotics is the beginning of the solution. By fostering creativity through competition to solve engineering challenges, we provide the inspiration society desperately needs. We develop an open platform for robotics and provide it to schools to open students' minds to the world of hacking. Student Robotics pushes engineering into schools by running a robotics competition between 16 to 18 year-olds. We send university students into schools to mentor the participating teams. The organisation is run entirely by students, who also develop the hardware and software for the participants to use. Student Robotics involves a whole range of software and hardware development, including including microcontroller programming, computer vision, and web-apps. This year we've started shipping the BeagleBoard as the robot's main computing device, providing us with a lot of scope for future hacking. In this talk I will: * Discuss the motivation behind Student Robotics * Provide a technical overview our current hardware and software * Discuss the future of Student Robotics in Europe For more information visit:bit.ly To download the video visit: bit.ly

Futureshock_orsonwelles

FutureShock_OrsonWelles
Drive By Theater and zeroheadroom.com present a kitsch vision of the future that is more akin to Space 1999! 'Future Shock' is a documentary film based on the book written in 1970 by sociologist and futurist Alvin Toffler. Released in 1972, with a cigar-chomping Orson Welles as on-screen narrator, this piece of futurism is darkly dystopian and oozing techno-paranoia... A great opening features a montage of car crashes and civil unrest intercut with two figures walking in a green field (while creepy synthesizers play in the background) who are soon revealed to be automatons with creepy robot faces -- a nice metaphor for the fear of the unrecognizable, cold, and chaotic future society that Toffler thought we were all headed for... So what exactly is "Future Shock"? Sociologist and futurist Alvin Toffler explains: "We may define future shock as the distress, both physical and psychological, that arises from an overload of the human organism's physical adaptive systems and it's decision-making processes... Put more simply, future shock is the human response to over-stimulation..." "Toffler's main argument is that humanity (as of 1970, when the book was written), is in the midst of an enormous shift from an industrial society to a super-industrial society; this new society will be characterized by such things as an acceleration of images, words, ideas, and technologies that could possibly overwhelm mankind, resulting in a serious disconnect when these new ideas reach their ...

A world congress and human rights for robots - part 2 of 2

A World Congress And Human Rights For Robots - Part 2 of 2
This is conditioning for the transhumanist agenda, blurring the line between humans and machines, as the elite prepare to merge the two in reality. (It was suggested earlier on that Portia's grandmother actually fell in love with the far less human-like "Andrew".) And finally he alters himself to allow him to age, and to die, as seen in this clip. In trying to acquire the right to call himself a human being, and to marry another human being, he is told that "society can tolerate an immortal robot but we will never tolerate an immortal human. It arouses too much jealousy, too much anger." Jumping further into the future, just seconds after "Andrew" dies he succeeds in acquiring human rights for himself, by being categorised as a human being. Society did not therefore have to tolerate an immortal human being. The President of the World Congress refers to "Andrew" first as a robot, and then as the oldest living human ...

Intelligent haptic tactile human robot and robot environment interaction

Intelligent Haptic tactile Human Robot and Robot Environment Interaction
Whole-sensitive robot arm iSoRA was developed to provide human-like capabilities of contact task performing in a wide variety of unstructured environments. To facilitate the developed anthropomorphic robot arm with joint torque measuring ability, the new optical torque sensors characterized by good accuracy, high signal-to-noise ratio, compact sizes, easy manufacturing, high signal bandwidth, robustness, and low cost were designed and manufactured. The main novelty of our method is application of the optical approach based on the ultra-small size PI RPI-121 as sensitive element. The effectiveness of the admittance control for ensuring the safety in human-robot physical interaction was experimentally illustrated on a new whole-sensitive robot arm. The proposed concept of obstacle avoidance through whole-arm tactile interaction enables the manipulator to adapt the planned motion to the obstacle shape. Such an algorithm is especially valuable for service robots working in real indoor environments. Tactile interaction gains the essential information about the contacting object (shape, stiffness, location, etc.). The developed robot iSoRA and control system have great potential to impact on the robot technologies for emerging human-robot coexistence society. In future, such robots will assist humans in daily life tasks, and provide the physical collaborative interaction and haptic communication while ensuring safety to the humans. Developer: Assistant Professor Dzmitry ...

Bv-01 trailer ( robot short )

BV-01 Trailer ( robot short )
"BV-01" Directed by Alessandro Pacciani is a mockumentary featuring a very agile robotic police officer. The short opens with the manufacturing of the robot and later its integration into Italian urban society. Its presence does not seem to attract attention as it walks a city beat. Later, we see the same robot street fighting in a "developing country" even protecting a small child in the process. At this point, the agility of the robot is shown as it performs somersaults and jumps over barriers. Eventually, the robot is gunned down during combat and the short comes full circle with the (re)manufacturing of the robot.
