Energy of the future: electric fuel | tomorrow today

Energy of the future: Electric fuel | Tomorrow Today
Hydrogen is being touted and the fuel of tomorrow, but there are still some problems to be ironed out. The gas is highly explosive and requires enormous storage tanks. Now, scientists doing basic research in Erlangen are proposing a solution. They call it carbazol, which looks similar to diesel fuel. The substance binds hydrogen in large quantities, thereby reducing its flammability and the risk of explosion. In a vehicle, the fuel is heated and used with a catalyst. Hydrogen is released into a fuel cell, which generates electricity to run the car. All the driver has to do is exchange the spent carbazol for fresh fuel at a filling station very similar to those of today.

Electric fuel sources for the future: Increasing natural gas and wind; decades later, nuclear
1/1/2011 - www.washingtonpost.com (Excerpts)"Coal is a dead man walkin'," says Kevin Parker, global head of asset management and a member of the executive committee at Deutsche Bank. "Banks won't finance them. Insurance companies won't insure them. The EPA is coming after them. . . . And the economics to make it clean don't work." From 2000 to 2008, construction started on 20 units in 19 plants, according to Edison Electric Institute. Last year, utilities and power-generating companies dropped plans to build 38 coal plants while announcing that they would retire 48 aging, inefficient ones, according to the environmental group Sierra Club. In 2002, there were plans to install 36000 megawatts of new coal-fired power by 2007. Only one-eighth of that was completed. Deutsche Bank predicts coal's share of electric power generation will tumble further, from 47 percent in 2009 to 34 percent in 2020 and 22 percent in 2030. [The report, 11/2010 136 pages: www.dbadvisors.com According to the Energy Information Administration - www.eia.doe.gov the US coal mining industry was operating at an anemic 75% of its production capacity in 2009, down from 85% in 2008 - www.flickr.com That low capacity utilization is the result of a huge drop in demand for coal as well as competition from a burgeoning supply of natural gas. To put the current controversy in perspective, the 2.7 million tons of coal that the Spruce mine would have produced annually represents less than 1% of the unused ...

1 megawatt fuel cell power plant

1 Megawatt Fuel Cell Power Plant
This is a video of a 1 megawatt Fuel Cell Power Plant at California State University, Northridge, in Los Angeles, CA. The power plant has a reformer that separates hydrogen from natural gas and then feeds the hydrogen into a fuel cell, generating electricity. The plant also recovers the heat generated and uses it for domestic heating on campus. In the future, some of the carbon emitted will be sequestered in a sub-tropical rain forest that is under construction. While at present this power plant still uses fossil fuels (the natural gas is needed in order to extract the hydrogen from it), in the future the hydrogen will be generated either from landfill gas, or else it will be electrolyzed using wind, solar, geothermal, wave or hydroelectric energy. What is most important and exciting about this plant is the fact that it is using fuel cells--touted to be the future of electricity generation--today, and they are working seamlessly on a large scale. The ucsd microgrid - showing the future of electricity ... today

The UCSD Microgrid - Showing the Future of Electricity ... Today
Rocky Mountain Institute visited the University of California, San Diego to study and document the "microgrid" that controls and integrates electricity supply and demand on the campus. UCSD's microgrid is one of the best examples of an electricity network that provides local control yet is interconnected with the larger electricity grid. At UCSD, the microgrid provides the ability to manage 42 megawatts of generating capacity, including a central cogeneration plant, an array of solar photovoltaic installations and a fuel cell that operates on natural gas reclaimed from a landfill site. The central microgrid control allows operators to manage the diverse portfolio of energy generation and storage resources on the campus to minimize costs. In addition, the campus can "island" from the larger grid to maintain power supply in an emergency, as in the case of the power blackout that struck parts of Southern California, Arizona and Mexico in September 2011. The microgrid at UCSD provides a living laboratory to experiment with integration and management of local resources and to optimize the use of these resources in interaction with market signals from the larger grid. Dead flies and mice could power future robots

Dead Flies and Mice Could Power Future Robots
For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com Scientists are developing autonomous robots that can generate their own power. Microbial fuel cells could be the answer, since these microbes can turn any organic material into electricity. UK researchers say they could be the future of sustainable energy. They're on the lookout for something that can fuel a truly autonomous robot. One that can extract power from any environment it operates in. And it would never run out of juice. UK researchers are looking into microbial fuel cells, or MFCs. These tiny microbes can turn organic matter into electricity. This could potentially allow robots to function in remote, or even hazardous environments with no worry about their next battery charge. This is because MFCs can extract electrical energy from any organic material that's digestible by the microbes in the fuel cell. All you need to do is to feed the MFC food - be it plant matter, flies or dead mice. And this will trigger a digestion process that can make electricity. Conventional fuel cells and batteries rely on a catalyst to speed up chemical reactions to make electricity. But they degrade and need replenishing. On the other hand MFCs just need food, and these microbes will continue to generate electricity. Ioannis Ieropoulos of the Bristol Robotics Laboratory is working towards a day when robots can be truly autonomous and can perform incredible tasks. [Dr. Ioannis ...

Public lecture—hydrogen: fueling the future

Public Lecture—Hydrogen: Fueling the Future
Lecture Date: Tuesday, February 27, 2007. As our dependence on foreign oil increases and concerns about global climate change rise, the need to develop sustainable energy technologies is becoming increasingly significant. Worldwide energy consumption is expected to double by the year 2050, as will carbon emissions along with it. This increase in emissions is a product of an ever-increasing demand for energy, and a corresponding rise in the combustion of carbon containing fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Undisputable scientific evidence indicates significant changes in the global climate have occurred in recent years. Impacts of climate change and the resulting atmospheric warming are extensive, and know no political or geographic boundaries. These far-reaching effects will be manifested as environmental, economic, socioeconomic, and geopolitical issues. Offsetting the projected increase in fossil energy use with renewable energy production will require large increases in renewable energy systems, as well as the ability to store and transport clean domestic fuels. Storage and transport of electricity generated from intermittent resources such as wind and solar is central to the widespread use of renewable energy technologies. Hydrogen created from water electrolysis is an option for energy storage and transport, and represents a pollution-free source of fuel when generated using renewable electricity. The conversion of chemical to electrical energy ...

Alternative fuel government cant tax and wont support, water

Alternative fuel government cant tax and wont support, water
Hydrogen is high in energy, yet an engine that burns pure hydrogen produces almost no pollution. NASA has used liquid hydrogen since the 1970s to propel the space shuttle and other rockets into orbit. Hydrogen fuel cells power the shuttle's electrical systems, producing a clean byproduct - pure water, which the crew drinks. A fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, heat, and water. Fuel cells are often compared to batteries. Both convert the energy produced by a chemical reaction into usable electric power. However, the fuel cell will produce electricity as long as fuel (hydrogen) is supplied, never losing its charge. Fuel cells are a promising technology for use as a source of heat and electricity for buildings, and as an electrical power source for electric motors propelling vehicles. Fuel cells operate best on pure hydrogen. But fuels like natural gas, methanol, or even gasoline can be reformed to produce the hydrogen required for fuel cells. Some fuel cells even can be fueled directly with methanol, without using a reformer. In the future, hydrogen could also join electricity as an important energy carrier. An energy carrier moves and delivers energy in a usable form to consumers. Renewable energy sources, like the sun and wind, can't produce energy all the time. But they could, for example, produce electric energy and hydrogen, which can be stored until it's needed. Hydrogen can also be transported (like electricity) to locations where it is ...

Honda fcx clarity zero-emissions, hydrogen-powered electric concept car

Honda FCX Clarity zero-emissions, Hydrogen-powered electric concept car
We travel to the moon-like island of Gotland, Sweden to see a £5million car running in Europe for the first time. The Honda FCX Clarity is an environmentally friendly, zero emissions, hydrogen powered, electric car. Transcript: "We are here on the beautiful island of Gotland, belonging to Sweden. Gotland is a very good example for how the future could look in terms of sustainable energy. Gotland has lots of wind power available with which you could generate Hydrogen - and that is the fuel which our car needs. The FCX concept car is a demonstration of what has been achieved at Honda in terms of fuel cell technology. As you know, we have air pollution problems which we almost solved so far, we have further the CO2 issue which is for global warming and therefore we have to be simply renewable. The fuel cell works simply as an electric vehicle, we have no real batteries on board, we utilise the Hydrogen to run in an electrochemical process. The electricity generated we use for the propulsion by electric motor. Well of course Honda is the largest producer of internal combustion engines which means more than 21 million. The ultimate goal is to fuel cell technology for Honda. We are considering an approach which is called Honda Home Energy Station where we create Hydrogen through a reforming process out of natural gas as one solution. We can also run a fuel cell within this system to generate electricity and heat for any home or household. The performance of the concept car is ...

A car that runs 200 miles on compressed air.

A car that runs 200 miles on compressed air.
Europe and the rest of the world are developing new technologies that will give them the economic edge in technology and products, as America unthinkingly erodes into a third world nation as our politicians who are beholden to fossil fuel companies, legislate for them to make billions of dollars. A car that runs on compressed air (that should be an American idea and benefit America's economy), is a French invention that orchestrates old technologies into a new chassis. Behold this newsworthy clip (that is not ready for US corporate controlled prime time news or even political debate) edited from HD Theater, "The Future Car: Fuel". Just another example of how corporations who control our legislative and executive branches of government are misallocating our resources, treasury and wealth, to insure their short term wealth and global domination, as we deteriorate economically and do nothing to preserve our economic leadership. What is America doing with its "talents" (see Matthew 25:14-25:39)?

Converting trash into electricity - eliminating the unwanted, while creating the needed

Converting Trash into Electricity - Eliminating the Unwanted, While Creating the Needed
The major thrust of EDCI Clean Energy Solutions is the conversion of waste and other carbonaceous materials into synthesis gas, liquid fuels and/or electricity. Depending upon the specific solution needed, EDCI works to establish a sound partnership that provides the right combination of cutting-edge technologies and expert project management. The advantages of using EDCI Clean Energy Solutions to convert carbonaceous materials and hydrocarbons into synthesis gas, liquid fuels and/or electricity are that: - Nothing hazardous ever goes into the ground, and practically no pollutants go into the air (emissions are well below all California EPA requirements). Through a proprietary "closed loop" system using super-low NOx burners and advanced thermal distillation technology developed by ACTi, our processes provide clean energy solutions that are more efficient and environmentally-friendly than any competitor's. - Processing of variable waste/organic streams through standard and proprietary processes (eg automated recycling of metals, autoclaving of municipal solid waste, etc.), provide for a much greater efficiency in the clean energy process, including the storage of gasification feedstock and produced fuels, as well as the concurrent gasification of multiple carbonaceous materials (eg coal, municipal solid waste, agricultural and animal waste, sewage sludge, used tires, waste plastics, medical waste, etc.) - Outputs are (1) synthesis gas, or syn-gas (CO+H2), which is either ...

Honda's video guide to hydrogen fuel cell technology in cars (eg. fcx clarity)

Honda's video guide to Hydrogen fuel cell technology in cars (eg. FCX Clarity)
Honda's guide to how the technology in its hydrogen fuel cell production vehicle - the FCX Clarity - works. "Fuel cell cars, which run on electricity produced from compressed Hydrogen, emit zero harmful emissions and could be the future of motoring. They can be just as fast, practical, and can travel as far as a conventional petrol or diesel engine car, but the technology is very different. And importantly, the only thing that comes out of the exhaust is water vapour. Rather than having a petrol or diesel tank like a conventional car, the fuel cell car has a tank that stores compressed Hydrogen as a gas. Hydrogen is used as an energy carrier, so that the fuel cell car can produce its own electricity onboard, rather than storing it in batteries. This compressed Hydrogen is expanded and then fed into the fuel cell stack. The fuel cell stack is like a tiny electric power station. Inside it, the Hydrogen combines with Oxygen from the air to generate electricity and water as a byproduct. Water vapour is the fuel cell car's only emission. The electricity created inside the fuel cell stack is used to power the electric motor, which is, in turn, used to drive the car. The fuel cell stack is made up of hundreds of individual cells stacked together like a loaf of bread. In fact, each cell is like a sandwich, with a Membrane Electrode Assembly (or MEA) between two separators (or Bi-Polar plates). The MEA is made up of a Proton Exchange Membrane, or PEM, which sits between Hydrogen ...

Episode 311 - EV Fest Toronto and the future of the electric car
Please visit us at oneillrealestate.ca or leave a comment. Are electric cars an (exhaust) pipe dream? Maybe not. On Sunday, October 17th, Gregory took a trip to see EV Fest, Toronto's first gathering of electric and hybrid vehicles. Dozens of electric and hybrid cars, trucks, SUVs and bikes were being showcased by hobbyists and OEMs. An estimated over 500 people attended the event. EV Fest was a collaboration between the Electrical Vehicle Society of Canada, the Toronto Hybrid Group, Durham Electrical Vehicle Association and the Electrical Vehicle Council of Ottawa with the assistance of Scarborough Toyota and Toyota-Lexus-on-the-Park. Robert Weekley, head organizer of the event, is one of the pioneers of the EV movement that came out to EV Fest in cars they converted to electric power in their garages. Robert's daily driver and research platform is "Electricfly", a 1989 Pontiac Firefly powered by lead-acid batteries. Robert continues to modernize the vehicle, with one of his next projects being improving the car's fuel range. It is work by these pioneers that have inspired current research into electrical vehicles - such as the car Lesley McLelland and the automotive engineering team at UOIT built for EcoCAR challenge, a 3 year competition that pits 16 universities across North America to built a near-production-ready low-emissions vehicle with all the features and comforts one would expect from a gas-powered car. Law 270.7 - lecture 13 - small hydro, alternative fossil fuels, and hydrogen

Law 270.7 - Lecture 13 - Small Hydro, Alternative Fossil Fuels, and Hydrogen
November 19, 2008 A discussion of issues related to small hydro development; There is a tremendous amount of oil trapped in Canadian tar sands and US oil shale. There have also been repeated efforts to promote the development of a market for synthetic gas, derived from coal. For all three, economic, environmental, land-use, and energy payback issues dominate the concerns. State and federal law play a key role, as well; Many leaders talk about a hydrogen future one in which hydrogen fuel cells provide pollution-free electric power. Hydrogen must be derived, rather than simply harvested. Its production is energy intensive and its broad distribution would require a massive pipeline and storage tank infrastructure. We will talk about where the technology stands and how government is trying to help it to advance.

Natural gas is a gaseous fossil fuel consisting primarily of methane but including significant quantities of ethane, propane, butane, and pentane—heavier hydrocarbons removed prior to use as a consumer fuel —as well as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium and hydrogen sulfide. It is found in oil fields (associated) either dissolved or isolated in natural gas fields (non associated), and in coal beds (as coalbed methane). When methane-rich gases are produced by the anaerobic decay of non-fossil organic material, these are referred to as biogas. Sources of biogas include swamps, marshes, and landfills, as well as sewage sludge and manure by way of anaerobic digesters, in addition to enteric fermentation particularly in cattle. Approximately 22 percent of the energy consumption of the US comes from natural gas. More than 62.5 percent of the homes in the US use natural gas as their main heating fuel. Natural gas is also an essential raw material for many common products, such as: paints , fertilizer, plastics, antifreeze, dyes, photographic film, medicines, and explosives. We also get propane when we ...

Verde reformation - turning water into the hydrogen fuels of the future

Verde Reformation - Turning Water into the Hydrogen Fuels of the Future
Verde creates hydrogen rich synthetic fuels, primarily from a virtual 100% extraction of hydrogen from water. This is mixed in 4-5 to 1 part with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide of low temperature biomass gasification to create a version of syngas that can be easily converted with different pressures and catalysts (GTL) to create very hydrogen-rich fuels and oils: ex: propane (20 psi), Fisher Tropsch oil (160 psi) and Methanol (260 psi). Verde's systems process any organic (animal or plant), plastic or coal waste products (in 1-1 to 1-2 parts waste to hydrogen from water), producing on average, 560 gallons of liquid products (not water) per ton of waste processed. Hydrogen is the key to both our energy and environmental problems at its' root. It is the literally the real energy component that burns hotter and cleaner. Increase the hydrogen concentration to over 30%, and the moisture created as a combustion reaction (h2 + 02 = h20) 'kicks' out most of the gas pollution (emissions). The concentration of hydrogen is so high in all of Verde's Synthetic fuels and oils lines, that it can now be used to help the rest of the petroleum industry, For more info - see www.verdereformation.com

Free energy - how to power your electric car: fuelless generator - on board charger

Free Energy - How to power your Electric Car: Fuelless Generator - On board charger
How to power your electric car. Here's the solution to the worldwide energy problem. All future Electric Vehicles will be equipped with this device and be able to sell electricity to the "charging stations". There are no moving parts in this self-starting device. To the engineers en designers: where have you been all the time? Leaders / politicians: how limited is your horizon? Even If you don't understand how, you can see it works. www.chavaenergy.com http Patent: www.magneticpowerinc.com ***** An ALTERNATIVE solution to the energy problem in general and already being in commercialisation, is the EBM Power Plant; working without permanent magnets, so you can't say it will run out of magnetic flux. Below: a text from Professor LI Szabó. "The self-reliant EBM plant uses its own self-generated electromagnetic fuel. This technology is non-nuclear, 100 % environment friendly with zero emissions." "We are routinely producing with our EBM Power Plants several kilowatts well over unity without any pollution and emissions whatsoever!" "One of these 10-megawatt units will heat 280 houses and air-condition them, plus you have cheap power, guaranteed at six cents." "All that EBM needs to start it is a small motor or engine that produces torque (2.5% - 5% of rated output, depending on how quickly you want to start it up). If you're out where there's no power at all, you go to a local farmer and get a John Deere, hook on to it and start it up. Initially, it rotates the EBM drive unit ...

Advanced engines, the future of evs and electric conversions - 05.08.2011

Advanced Engines, The Future of EVs and Electric Conversions - 05.08.2011
Dan Goldstein starts off this week with a look at advanced engine technology. The internal combustion engine has been the mainstay of the automobile for more than 100 years. But a new generation of engineers believe they can build a better engine, one that runs more efficiently and gets better gas mileage. In "Not Your Grandpa's Engine," Dan looks sat some of the new designs being pitched to auto makers and finds out how they're accepted in Detroit. Next, on "Energy Then" -- a look at one of the predecessors to today's electric vehicles, the Both Electric, produced in Australia in 1940. This spunky three-wheeler was used mainly for deliveries and essential transport. But it was touted as an urban transportation solution that was easy to drive and parallel park. On "The Mix," anchor Thalia Assuras talks with Jeremy Anwyl , CEO of car rating website Edmunds.com and Mary Beth Stanek, Director of Environment and Energy at General Motors to explore if electric plug-in and alternative fuel vehicles could replace internal combustion engines. Next up, electric cars are hitting showrooms this year, but they're not new. Just as the thousands of drivers who have converted their internal combustion vehicles to run on electricity. In "Taking Charge: Electric Car Conversions," Lee Patrick Sullivan meets the people who make it possible and one of their happy customers. Finally, in "The Hot Zone," William and Princess Catherine made their first drive as a married couple in a car that ran ...

Solar energy - the future is now

Solar Energy - The Future is Now
Solar Energy is energy from the Sun. This energy drives the climate and weather and supports virtually all life on Earth. Heat and light from the sun, along with solar-based resources such as wind and wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for most of the available flow of renewable energy. Solar energy technologies harness the sun's energy for practical ends. These technologies date from the time of the early Greeks, Native Americans and Chinese, who warmed their buildings by orienting them toward the sun. Modern solar technologies provide heating, lighting, electricity and even flight. Solar power is used synonymously with solar energy or more specifically to refer to the conversion of sunlight into electricity. This can be done either through the photovoltaic effect or by heating a transfer fluid to produce steam to run a generator. Solar photovoltaics provide 0.04% of the world's energy usage. There are many technologies for harnessing solar energy. Applications span through the residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural and transportation sectors. Solar energy can be used to produce food, heat, light and electricity. The flexibility of solar energy is manifest in a wide variety of technologies

Green future technology to introduce revolutionary invention

Green Future Technology to introduce revolutionary invention
Green Future Technology introduced a revolutionary invention that saves fuel consumption 'GFT hydrogen generator' at the 2008 Great West Truck Show in Las Vegas. The GFT Hydrogen Fuel Generator uses water with no chemical additives, reducing the emission of harmful greenhouse gasses into the environment. When the engine is running, the movement of electricity through the water in the generator divides the water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen through a process called electrolysis. It can be used on all gasoline, diesel and LP engines. According to the company, using this generator, you can save 15% to 40% fuel consumption as well as improve mileage by 20% to 40%.

Electric car battery's record range of 280 miles per charge

Electric Car Battery's Record Range of 280 Miles Per Charge
For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com A German company has developed a battery-powered electric car capable of driving 280 miles on a single charge. The company says the car can be made for a price similar to a conventional petrol fueled car - some very good news for the environment. A German company say their new battery could be the breakthrough electric car-makers have been waiting for. The car should power a normal family car for up to 450km or 280 miles on a single charge. The company, DBM Energy, says their new lithium-polymer technology is lighter and more efficient than lithium-ion batteries. They've fitted them in an Audi A2 to demonstrate their practicalities. [Swen Streubel, Spokesman, LE Mobile]: "This is no miracle, we have all of the components which are available in the car and in theory we can show that it is possible to travel via electricity today and that it is suitable for daily life." Unlike other electric cars where the entire boot or trunk is used for the battery, the "Kolibri" battery occupies a lot less space. Last Autumn, DBM Energy drove a different version - a prototype A2 - into the record books with a 600km trip from Munich to Berlin on a single charge. The company says it used independent testers to verify the feat. The Federal Office of Material Research checked the safety of the Kolibri battery while technical services company Dekra checked the performance. DBM Energy ...

Honda fcx clarity hydrogen fuel cell car faqs with robert llewellyn

Honda FCX Clarity Hydrogen fuel cell car FAQs with Robert Llewellyn
John Kingston, Environment Manager at Honda (UK) discusses the burning questions around the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell electric car - which only emits water, no harmful gasses - with self-confessed eco car geek (and TV presenter) Robert Llewellyn. Partial transcript: John Kingston, Environment Manager at Honda (UK), discusses the burning questions around the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell electric car - which only emits water, no harmful gases - with self-confessed eco car geek (and TV presenter) Robert Llewellyn. Robert: "The fuel cell is this kind of mystery object. It's almost like 'Back to the Future'. It's the thing with tubes going in that does stuff and electricity comes out. And I mean, it's certainly technology that's beyond my understanding." John: "Well, it's essentially - the great thing about Hydrogen fuel cell technology is you produce electricity onboard, so we have the Hydrogen tank, within which is compressed Hydrogen. And that Hydrogen combines with Oxygen in the fuel cell. A chemical reaction takes place between those two gases, and electricity is produced. And that electricity powers an electric motor, which propels the vehicle. So it's not like Hydrogen itself is going through an internal combustion engine - it's the electricity that's produced from the fuel cell which powers the electric motor." Robert: "The big questions that I've come across regarding Hydrogen fuel cell cars are 1. the cost of the Hydrogen fuel cell, which I know at the moment is ...
