A taste of freedom - food waste prevention

Preventing food waste by collecting unwanted fruit & transforming it into delectable treats to tell the world to enjoy food rather than throwing it away. Rich countries like the US and the UK waste up to half of their food -- enough to lift all the world's billion malnourished people out of hunger at least four times over. A Taste of Freedom has been set up to show that the solutions to this gargantuan problem can be relatively simple, and delicious. Led by author of 'Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal', Tristram Stuart, and team members Emily Elgar and Eloise Dey, the Freedom team are building on their amazing success with Feeding the 5000, the event in London's Trafalgar Square where 5000 people were given a free lunch made from food that would otherwise have been wasted. Catholic Charities' Summer Food Program Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago's Summer Food Program (SFP) provides free, nutritious meals to help children 18 and younger in low-income areas get the nutrition they need to learn, play and grow throughout the summer when school is out. Breakfasts and lunches are distributed through a network of community partners in areas that qualify for free and reduced lunch. In today's world when nature is increasingly being pushed to the sidelines as economic growth requires more room to recline, such an idea is actually more provocative that one may immediately realize. How does one value nature, or rather, put a value on it? Is it a good idea to put a monetary price tag on the parts of life that are indeed priceless? And how can we take into account (literally) the invaluable services that mother nature freely provides? In this video, Ken Bagstad brings viewers into the world of Ecosystem Services and discusses the tools being used to value them in today's economic context. Ken is a post-doctoral associate, working as the project economist for the joint US Geological Survey-Bureau of Land Management Ecosystem Services Valuation Pilot. For this work, Ken is evaluating alternative tools to assess and value ecosystem services using monetary and non-monetary methods. This work is focused on the San Pedro River, in southeast Arizona, and has the long-term goal of determining how to use bring ecosystem services concepts into the field of public land management. Abiquiu lake lands day

For the seventh straight year the US Army Corps of Engineers at Abiquiu Lake will be hosting & seeking volunteers for the National Public Lands Day. Activities begin at at the Cerrito Boat Ramp parking lot and end for lunch at noon. Volunteers will be assisting lake staff with shoreline cleanup, river cleanup, trail work & landscaping. Volunteers will get to enjoy both day-use facilities & camping at no cost. There will also be live music, an environmental education fair, & a free lunch for volunteers. As a volunteer youll get to enjoy recreating in the very great outdoors that belongs to you by camping, hunting, fishing, biking, hiking, bird watching, sight-seeing, etcetera. Economics of land value part 5

Part 5. Wendell Fitzgerald with Peter Melton discuss the history of how land comes to have a market value and the implications for the economics of land, public policy and environmental concerns. Simply stated land gets its market value from society as a whole. Population and what people are able to produce on, in or from land with ever more productive tools and technology result in the increase in the market value of land, ie what people are willing to pay in rents or purchase price for access to land. The little appreciated fact is that land value is NOT created by landowners who are only responsible for creating the value of improvements and goods and services produced on the land. Historically landowners are allowed to collect land value as if they had created it via rents and in purchase prices. That practice is at the expense of society at large and non-landowners in particular who pay rent and then are forced to pay taxes to provide community services all of which increase land value (and their rents). Private collection of community created land value is not merely an economic justice and free lunch to landowners but the prime motivation for land speculation and most if not all environmental abuse. Exclusive use of land for purposes of protecting producers is correct policy but private ownership of land value is not.
