Many farmers and gardeners turn away from tilling

Many Farmers and Gardeners Turn Away From Tilling
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Farmers and gardeners have turned the soil for centuries. But many now believe in no-till or reduced tillage, a method also called conservation tillage. The Conservation Technology Information Center says forty percent of American cropland used this method at last report.Tilling can remove weeds and the waste from last season's crops and help break down old plant material into fertilizer. But it can also increase the risk of soil erosion by rain or wind. Tilling also releases carbon dioxide from the soil into the atmosphere. No-till keeps carbon in the soil and avoids the release of heat-trapping gases from motorized equipment. It also keeps water in the soil and protects helpful organisms like earthworms. And it saves money on labor, machinery and fuel.A recent study reported on almost twenty years of different tillage methods in the American states of Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska. The researchers say tillage makes soil less resistant to being broken apart by raindrops. They say no-till stores more soil carbon, which helps the soil particles stick together. They found that the first two and a half centimeters of topsoil are up to seven times stronger against rain than plowed soil. The study also noted that when tilled soil particles come in contact with air, soil organic matter is lost through the process of oxidation. The findings appeared in the Soil Science Society ...

Detroit: urban farming @ earthworks community garden

Detroit: Urban Farming @ Earthworks Community Garden
After my explorations of Windsor on October 17, 2008 I headed over to Detroit where I embarked on a driving tour with Jeanette Pierce, co-founder of Inside Detroit, a non-profit organization that offers a wide range of thematic tours of Detroit. From Stroh River Place, a mixed-use development of converted Victorian warehouses, we headed to Belle Isle, Detroits urban island and leisure playground. After a visit to the upscale Indian Village and the Gleaner Food Bank, an example of urban farming, Jeanette took me to the Heidelberg Project, an outdoor art installation that features painted houses and artistic compositions made of discarded items. Artist Tyree Guiton originally conceived this project in the mid 1980s as a protest against the deterioration of his childhood neighbourhood. We were able to catch a brief interview with the creator of this now world-renowned project. After a brief stop at Detroits Eastern Market we drove through Midtown Detroit which is highlighted by various cultural and educational institutions including Wayne State University and the Detroit Institute of Arts. North of there is New Centre, which is distinguished by two 1920s architectural masterpieces: the Fisher Building and Cadillac Place, the former headquarters of General Motors. In the evening I enjoyed a tasty seafood dinner at Sindbads Restaurant which has a great location right on the Detroit River. The Blancke family has been running this restaurant since 1949. Finally, after a long and ...

Obama Kills Farmers....Organic Gardeners Now Terrorists HR875 and S425 Farm Nationalization
I thought Obama was " green ", then why the heck are they going to criminalize organic farming ? This only serves to help corporate farming conglomerates and will force out the small American farmer trying to grow healthy food. All your food must soon come genetically modified highly sprayed with pesticides from Corporations.....it's getting hard to tell the Corporate agenda from the Government agenda...if there is one...... I'll bet all the tree-huggers who like to eat healthy food are starting to wonder about Obama Please get more information from StarJaded below... www.youtube.com www.freespeech.org .

Amy's farm urban gardening

Amy's Farm Urban Gardening
Randy's personal journey began when he had realized managing a cattle farm was unproductive. He reached a fork in his life where he was deciding what to do because he had realized that managing a cattle farm in Pomona was counterproductive to nature and its environment. While attending church one day, he heard of a drive by-shooting where a young man was shot and killed. That's where he decided to create a program which helped kids learn about sustainable farming. This new method is called Small Plot Intensive Nature Farming (SPIN) where someone could manage a one-half acre farm or two feet by twenty-five long parcel of land and grow radishes, spinach, peas, or beans. Amy's Farm is a non-profit 501c3 organization, his mission is to teach and promote an urban farming method promoted through the methodology of Mr. EP Schumocker. His books include Small is Beautiful and Good Work. Randy feels that this farming method can be taught to youth or anyone who is interested in becoming an urban farmer. This economic model is challenging at first due to ones' level of experience, however, one's ability could improve over time where one could create a co-operative. The challenge one would face is the notion that food is cheap, however if one is interested in growing good fruits and vegetables then the mindset needs to shift. People would rather pay $5 for a Starbucks Coffee than pay for organically grown vegetables. The SPIN method provides a means to create a healthy diet as well as ...

11-17-2010 Organic Farms and Back Yard Gardens will become illegal by S 510.mp4
Organic Farms, Back Yard Vegetable Gardens and animal farming destroyed by S 510 "The Food Safety Modernization Act" "We have just received word that tomorrow, Wednesday, November 17, 2010, the Senate will vote on S. 510 Food Safety Bill! "If accepted [S 510] would preclude the public's right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, feed and eat each and every food that nature makes. It will become the most offensive authority against the cultivation, trade and consumption of food and agricultural products of one's choice. It will be unconstitutional and contrary to natural law or, if you like, the will of God." It is similar to what India faced with imposition of the salt tax during British rule, only S 510 extends control over all food in the US, violating the fundamental human right to food." ~ Dr. Shiv Chopra, Canada Health whistle blower. Farming in the city: joys of growing food

Farming in the City: Joys of Growing Food
This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http For many years, people in American cities have depended on farmers in rural areas to grow fruits and vegetables. But now a new generation of farmers is planting crops in urban areas. Sean Conroe is a college student. Amber Banks is a teacher. They both grew up farming and gardening. Sean Conroe and Amber Banks wanted to start a farm in the middle of Seattle, Washington. Amber Banks says: "There are a lot of neighborhoods that don't have access to healthy, fresh produce. And if they do, it can be very expensive. So we see unused space as a great place to grow food that will make it more accessible for people."Sean Conroe created a website to get volunteers and donations. Within a week, they were offered a plot of land between two houses. He says twenty volunteers worked for six weekends to turn the grassy land into a farm. They call their project Alleycat Acres. He says they are growing spinach, onions, radish, lettuce and chard that are ready to be harvested. There are also carrots, green onions, peas, beans and turnips. And they are growing broccoli, tomatillos, cucumbers and strawberries. The Alleycats have harvested about ninety kilograms of produce so far. They have donated most of it to local food banks that feed hungry people in Seattle. Bridget Barni was sitting in the dirt picking lettuce. She is one of eighty people who are volunteering at this urban farm. Like a lot of the ...
