Biospharms - sustainable agriculture mini farming

Biospharms - Sustainable Agriculture Mini Farming
A Biospharm is a sustainable agriculture mini farm capable of sustaining a family through solar power, rain water cisterns, complimentary animal ecosystems, small herds, fruit trees, and vegetable gardening. The name is a combination of biosphere and farm. The "ph" was kept, because this is not the kind of large scale farming that most people think of. It's small scale agriculture for personal consumption, not for comercial purposes. Biospharm communities are under construction right now, and more videos will be coming soon. We've designed the entire community concept to be affordable for literally just about anyone. Subscribe to this chanel to keep up to date on the latest developments. We'll be explaining the concepts and appropriate technologies in detail shortly. PM us if you think you may be a pharmer at heart, or if you have questions about any of the material we cover. We'd love to hear from you.

Agricultural subsidies: corporate welfare for farmers

Agricultural Subsidies: Corporate Welfare for Farmers
"The government is bailing out the banks...but who's going to bail out the government?" asks Texas cotton farmer Ken Gallaway, a vocal critic of agricultural subsidies that cost US taxpayers and consumers billions of dollars a year in direct payments and higher prices for farm goods. Agricultural subsidies were put in place in the 1930s during the Great Depression, when 25 percent of Americans lived on farms. At the time, Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace called them "a temporary solution to deal with an emergency." Those programs are still in place today, even though less than 1 percent of Americans currently live on farms that are larger, more efficient, and more productive than ever before. Consider these facts. Ninety percent of all subsidies go to just five crops: corn, rice, cotton, wheat, and soybeans. Two thirds of all farm products—including perishable fruits and vegetables—receive almost no subsidies. And just 10 percent of recipients receive 75 percent of all subsidies. A program intended to be a temporary solution has become one of our governments most glaring examples of corporate welfare. US taxpayers arent the only ones who pay the price. Cotton subsidies, for example, encourage overproduction which lowers the world price of cotton. Thats great for people who buy cotton, but its disastrous for already impoverished cotton farmers in places such as West Africa. US farm programs cost taxpayers billions each year, significantly raise the price of ...

www.permies.com http Helen Atthowe considers economic benefits (profit!) in organic farming systems vs. permaculture farming systems (aka: conservation farming; agricultural ecology conservation farming). Benefits include: less labor, less land, zero spraying for insects, less fertilizer, less weeding, While organic farming focused more on managing crops, soil fertility, reduction of pests, and reduction of chemicals. Farmers speak: bust up big ag

Farmers Speak: Bust Up Big Ag
There are 2 million farmers and 300 million consumers in the US. Standing in between are a handful of companies who control how food gets from one side to the other. In 2010, the USDA and Dept of Justice are holding a series of hearings on this issue -- the matter of corporate concentration in food and agriculture. The first hearing was March 12, in Ankeny, Iowa. The night before, about 250 independent family farmers and community activists gathered for a town hall meeting to share their own experiences with big ag. For more; www.bustthetrust.org

Urban farming: hydroponics in the city

Urban Farming: Hydroponics in the City
Keeping agriculture sustainable increasingly means keeping it local. Besides the environmental benefit of reducing reliance on fossil-fuel guzzling transportation, eating local food is a more seasonal and often healthier experience. With concern about food security growing, it might turn out to be safer, too. The folks in charge of the Science Barge, a new urban farming experiment in New York, are bringing local food production closer than ever. In this video Vanessa Rae learns about the floating greenhouse facility, which is designed as a demonstration of how urban space, especially rooftop space in big cities like New York, can be used to efficiently produce food. Self-powered by solar panels, wind turbines, and a biodiesel generator, the Science Barge uses state of the art computer technology and an agricultural technique called hydroponics to grow fruits and veggies using much less water and space than field farming. Watch out, city slickers. Farm country is coming to your neighborhood.

Conservation farming and sustainability, missoula, montana

Conservation Farming and Sustainability, Missoula, Montana
www.permies.com Helen Atthowe, Missoula County Extension Agent (Missoula, Montana) talks about the farming techniques she used near Stevensville, Montana. She calls it "Conservation Farming". Helen is well known in the Missoula area, not just as the Missoula county extension agent, but also as one of the most popular vendors at the Missoula farmers Market Missoula Saturday market. "The goal of our conservation farming is to increase farm profitability by decreasing labor and land requirements while striving to mimic the ecological principles that make native plant systems sustainable. The ecological principles we hope to mimic include reduced tillalge, increase species and genetic diversity, closed nutrient cycles, and creation of more diverse habitat. We look at our farm from a landscape or watershed level and hope to reconnect wild areas, agriculture and urban areas. Conservation agriculture is both biologically and socially a local agriculture." "We're trying to develop an agriculture system, in this case a vegetable production system, that sponsors its own fertility." Biological pest management: ".. mimic from a natural system is to sponsor our own pest control." "We're creating habitat for beneficial insects, parasites and predators ..." "We are trying to provide habitat for birds, and pollinator insects and for other mammals that may be in the system. We're trying to create a link between natural systems and agricultural systems." Obama to end family farms

Obama To End Family Farms
DOT To Mandate All Farm Vehicles Require CDL Licenses, Could Bring Demise To Farmers In Late May, the DOT proposed a rule change for farm equipment, and if it this allowed to take effect, it will place significant regulatory pressure on small farms and family farms all across America -- costing them thousands of dollars and possibly forcing many of them out of business. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), part of the Department of Transportation (DOT), wants new standards that would require all farmers and everyone on the farm to obtain a CDL (Commercial Drivers License) in order to operate any farming equipment. The agency is going to accomplish this by reclassifying all farm vehicles and implements as Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs). (It is also important to note here that DOT Secretary Ray LaHood holds a seat on the newly created White House Rural Council. A powerful group whose members have ties to George Soros and The Center For American Progress.) The move by the DOT appears to be "legislation through regulation." By reclassifying all farm vehicles and implements as Commercial Vehicles, the federal government will now be able to claim regulatory control over the estimated 800000 farm workers in America, at the same time, overriding the rights of the states. The proposed change also means ANYONE driving a tractor or operating any piece of motorized farming equipment would be forced to pass the same rigorous tests and fill out the same detailed ...

Fred kirschenmann: the future of agriculture-part 1

Fred Kirschenmann: The Future of Agriculture-Part 1
Visit us on the web for more video stories, and information: Cooking Up a Story (cookingupastory.com). Fred Kirschenmann steadfastly warns us, conventional agriculture, and its heavy dependence upon fossil fuels, and irrigated water, simply will not continue to offer a viable means for feeding the world. We have been drawing upon natures reserves of stored energy (hydrocarbons) and water resources at unsustainable rates, and those finite resources are diminishing rapidly; technology alone, will not provide substitute solutions. The argument that conventional agriculture (modern industrial farming) is necessary in order to meet the needs of a growing global population, simply ignores the realities of the elephants in the room. Sustainability, with an emphasis upon the concept of resiliency, and a renewed respect for maintaining the fertility (quality) of the soil, is to Kirschenmann now, the foundation of a new food system toward creating a food revolution.

From ancient farmers, lessons for today's amazon

From Ancient Farmers, Lessons for Today's Amazon
This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report , from voaspecialenglish.com | http South America's Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest and river system on Earth. But the Amazon is disappearing at the rate of about eight hundred thousand hectares a year. This deforestation is caused by an increase in agriculture and cattle ranching and the building of roads and dams. Another cause is the illegal cutting of trees for logging companies. Now, a new study says ancient Amazonian farming methods could offer valuable lessons for today. The study looks at the pre-Columbian period. Christopher Columbus and other European explorers began arriving in the Americas in the late fourteen hundreds. The researchers studied a coastal wetland area where ancient farm beds and canals remain unchanged. The site is in French Guyana. A widely held belief is that pre-Columbian farmers used a great deal of fire to manage Amazonian ecosystems. But the scientists say their study calls this idea into question. It shows that raised-field farmers limited their burning to improve agricultural production.Jose Iriarte from the University of Exeter in England was lead author of the study. Mr. Iriarte says fire results in the loss of important nutrients for crops. When land is not being used for farming, periods without fire are most effective in rebuilding soil organic matter and preserving soil structure. "So in this sense," he says, "we interpreted that they were limiting fires because it was ...

VVH-TV News Special Organic Farming: Can It Feed Us? Part 1 Karl Grossman Chief Investigative Reporter examines Organic Farming on Eastern Long Island. What is organic farming? Organic farming can be defined as an approach to agriculture where the aim is to create integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural production systems. Maximum reliance is placed on locally or farm-derived renewable resources and the management of self-regulating ecological and biological processes and interactions in order to provide acceptable levels of crop, livestock and human nutrition, protection from pests and diseases, and an appropriate return to the human and other resources employed.
