I was never given the training and observation period promised me and was immediately fed to the wolves. Mind you, these wolves were 5 years old.....but vicious! This is a cautionary tale for anyone planning to head overseas to teach. If you're promised training, you may not get it, so do some preparation work before you come abroad. What can you do to prepare before you come to Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan? 1. Take a TESOL or a CELTA course. 2. Get some ESL teacher texts from a bookstore and read them. 3. Volunteer to tutor at your university's International Students Center. 4. Volunteer to tutor at a local school (you may need a criminal background check). 5. Jonathan kozol: education in america (4 of 6)

www.mediaed.org Jonathan Kozol is a non-fiction writer, educator, and activist, best known for his books on public education in the United States. Kozol graduated from Noble and Greenough School in 1954, and Harvard University summa cum laude in 1958 with a degree in English Literature. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford. He did not, however, complete his Rhodes, deciding instead to go to Paris to write a novel. He spent four years there writing his only published work of fiction, The Fume of Poppies, and getting to know the likes of William Styron. It was upon his return that he began to tutor children in Roxbury, MA, and soon became a teacher in the Boston Public Schools. He was fired for teaching a Langston Hughes poem, as described in Death at an Early Age, and then became deeply involved in the civil rights movement. After being fired from BPS he was offered a job to teach for Newton Public Schools, the school district that he had attended as a child, and taught there for several years before becoming more deeply involved in social justice work and dedicating more time to writing. Kozol has since held two Guggenheim Fellowships, has twice been a fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation, and has also received fellowships from the Field and Ford Foundations. The interviewer is Paddy Glackin, another great fiddle player in his own right. Leo Rowsome was born in April 1903 in Dublin City into a family with a strong piping tradition. Leo's grandfather, Samuel of Ballintore, Co. Wexford, was a contemporary of Johnny Cash another famous piper, and Leo's father William and Uncles Tom and John were all proficient at the uilleann pipes. The Rowsome house in Harold's Cross was full of music and noise! Leo's father died in 1928 and Leo himself then took up his father's practice of making pipes. Due to the prevailing economic condition, Leo left school early to commence work at 14 years of age. I'm going to reveal some of the "secrets" of FateofDestinee and answer a couple of questions I'm asked often. The first question that I'm going to address is: Where did my interest in firearms start? My parents are both involved with the military, and my brother recently joined the Army. But my interest with guns really started with my dad. My family has never been very well off, but my father did have a used Browning semi auto rifle (BAR) and an ATIS shotgun (the copy of the Browning A5). When I was eight or nine, it was a great privilege for me that once in a while, my dad would take me out to the range with him and his best friend. I didn't shoot at the time, but I did watch, and sometimes I got to spot for him. Later, I bought my own Browning semi auto rifle, just like what my dad's looked like when I was a kid. My dad has passed down the mindset to me of developing self control, focus, and challenging myself at the range. Personally, I don't have a military or law enforcement background, so I shoot because I enjoy the challenge against myself. When I go to the range, I can just pit myself against myself (I don't play team sports) and get into my "bubble." It doesn't matter how many other people are there or what they're firing because all I'm focusing on is me, the front sights, and the target.
