Cheryl Eaton, MBA in Managing for Sustainability,
gradschool.marlboro.edu Capstone project description "Wild Genius - A Model for Unleashing Innovation and Inspiring Commitment for Social Change."If the current economic crisis has accomplished anything, it has opened our eyes to the deficiency in business today. Add to this impending climate change and various other forms of environmental degradation, as well as the growing disparity of wealth and other social justice issues, and we have a world full of challenges and desperation. We need now more than ever leaders of all types at every level, in every sort of organization engaged in uncovering innovative solutions to our troubles. Wild Genius is a model for unleashing both innovation and a commitment to take action. At the heart of Wild Genius is the belief that as individuals and leaders we generally do not bring our whole selves our natural, indigenous state, and our full range of competencies and relationships to bear in issues of business, community, family, or of global concern. When we bring this full humanness to bear, we evoke our Wild Genius.

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Become a Fan on FACEBOOK: on.fb.me The theme of the 12th 5--year plan discussed on CCP's 「two meetings」 is 「to slow down the economy growth and to improve quality.」 Experts believe, if the expansion of state-owned firms and shrinking of the private sector continue, the sustainability of the economy will be empty talk. China』s economic problems are now societal issues. German newspaper Handelsblatt analyzes that disparity in wealth distribution is extremely severe. The gap between the rich and poor divides the society. According to Reuters, a report by Beijing』s Tianze Economic Institute found that China has a structural problem, where state-owned businesses enjoy favorable policies and competition advantages, while the private sectors struggle. Financial Professor Chen Zhiwu of Yale told VOA, The root of the problem lies in the strong influence of government in economy and a weak private sector. Chen: As the government owns the majority of assets, the economy relies on foreign investments and exports. The beneficiary of the wealth effect is the government. Meanwhile, family consumption will not increase rapidly due to the slow income increase.」 Chen estimated, Chinese government and state-owned firms own 75% of the state wealth. Family wealth recently declined to 35% of GDP. Government expenditure exceeded 40%. The tax revenue exceeds the annual dispensable income of 800 million urban ...

Mining, the Amazon and sustainable development | PDAC | Canada | Panzine16 | PanTV
Delegates, investors and mining companies attended the PDAC convention (Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada) and discussed new projects, investments and new technologies. The annual convention happens in Toronto and its recognized as the world's most important. Brazil was represented by politics, major mining companies, and many geologists, which are responsible for the most jobs done on land. One of the most interesting points on daily newspapers, mining on Amazon land, leaves a question up in the air: how to explore the Amazon land using sustainable development? That's what they mean by global governance. We are in a New World Order now and these phony scientists must be shown their fake science is not working on those who can still think for themselves. "return back dropped out students" - a drama by the students of wazza

As part of imagine1days program to support education for young girls in Ethiopia, imagine1day recently partnered with Lunapads, a women-owned small business based in Vancouver, Canada whose mission is to help women have healthier and more positive experiences of their menstrual cycles, and by extension, their bodies overall. Through various fundraising initiatives, the gals at Lunapads sent several Pads 4 Girls Kits (www.lunapads.com to Ethiopia with imagine1days Executive Director, Sapna Dayal on her recent trip in May 2009. Sapna met with the Girls Club at the Wazza Primary School in Tigray, Ethiopia and discussed the issues that arise when girls begin to menstruate. Many are forced to drop out of school, enter into early marriages and have children, robbing them of their right to education. She gave them the kits and new underwear as aids for teaching and awareness building. One week after Sapna met with the girls, the imagine1day team was invited back to the school for the performance of a play written and performed by the girls club. It was a magical experience to watch an entire school of boys and girls ages six to fifteen, silently absorbed in the drama highlighting cultural norms and practices that result in gender disparity and female school drop outs. imagine1day has been supporting the community of Wazza for the past year and a half, helping bring quality, sustainability and equality to their incredible school.

Provost lecture - mary ellen iskenderian: microfinance: empowering women, transforming lives

Provost Lecture - Mary Ellen Iskenderian: Microfinance: Empowering Women, Transforming Lives
The lecture began with Mark Aronoff introducing Mary Ellen Iskenderian, the President and CEO of Women's World Banking, or WWB. WWB is the world's largest network of microfinance institutions. "WWB members are diverse in geography and structure, but united in the belief that microfinance must remain committed to helping poor women access innovative financial products, services and information," Aronoff said. Iskenderian, who recently won the 2009- 2010 New York University's Stern School of Business Distinguished Citi Fellowship in Leadership and Ethics, spoke about how microfinance can empower and help women in developing countries. Through 39 institutions, located in 27 countries, WWB reaches more than 24 million clients. Eighty-two percent of these clients are women. When asked, why there is a focus on women, WWB says it sees this focus as a more efficient way to end poverty. As a non-profit organization, WWB strives for sustainability by keeping the institution grant funded. Recently, the organization has been trying to shift to more of a social enterprise. One venture is the Isis Fund, which is a $60 million fund to make equity investments in the 39 WWB institutions. Iskenderian reflected upon how microfinance has become "a victim of its own success." In recent times, the industry has become commercialized due to the growth. Because of this the industry has shifted away from the low-income populations. According to Iskenderian, this is important to look at since ...

Eric zuley interviews taryn manning (exclusive)

Eric Zuley interviews Taryn Manning (Exclusive)
www.wtvonline.net Taryn Manning is an actress featured alongside many pop culture icons, usually within the teenage limelight. Gaining loads of attention from her role in 2002's Crossroads starring pop music superstar Britney Spears, Manning developed increasing correlations between herself as a performer and the music industry. Born on November 6, 1978, in Tucson, AZ, she moved with her family to California at the age of 12. There she attended Orange County High School of the Arts, and would go on to find career success in show business just a few years after graduation. Her ties with music began early, as she would collaborate on song compositions with her brother, a practice which would itself be incorporated into a film in which Manning appeared. In 1999, she was featured in an independent film called Speedway Junkies, which gave rise to later roles on television. Besides appearances in episodes of the TV series The Practice, NYPD Blue, and Boston Public, Manning had a starring role on the series Get Real in 1999. Television stardom led to roles in major motion pictures, and she made her film debut with a part in Crazy/Beautiful starring Kirsten Dunst in 2001. A romantic teen drama dealing with racial issues, Crazy/Beautiful gave Manning a chance to make a statement as a hardcore partier named Maddy. In 2002, she played the role of Britney Spears' spunky and adventurous friend Mimi, in romantic road-trip story Crossroads, also starring Anson Mount and Zoe Saldana ...

Catherine delahunty - estimates speech on education

Catherine Delahunty - Estimates speech on Education
Parliament - 18 August 2009. Tēnā koe, Mr Chair. Tēnā koutou katoa. The Education and Science Committee discussed the appropriations with the education Minister a few weeks ago. During that discussion I asked the Minister some questions about national standards. I was trying to find out what need the Government was trying to address. The question I asked was whether the Education Review Office had reported that schools lacked the tools for assessment, or whether it was that schools were not consistently applying those tools. The Minister gave me some confusing answers, telling me that there were assessment tools already and not all schools used them, and we did need national standards. I have been talking to teachers and parents, and listening to principals comments about this issue. Many of them are wondering what problem we are trying to fix, although everyone agrees that plain English reporting to parents is a pretty good idea. But what are we trying to measure through these standards that we do not have a way of finding out already? How well a child is progressing or how close to the top of the league table their school is. We pressed the Minister as to whether these were hurdles or progress indicators, and she said that they were both. The Green Party finds that quite strange. If we ask teachers now, they can tell us now who is doing well in their classes and who needs extra help. They already have the assessment tools to do that. As the Canadian teachers union says ...

Sodium reduction: time for choice

Sodium Reduction: Time for Choice
The vast majority of US adults consume excess sodium, which causes hypertension, a condition that affects nearly 1 in 3 Americans. Hypertension is not only a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, disability, and health disparities, but the treatment of high blood pressure and related diseases costs more than $270 billion annually. Today, people have little control over how much sodium to eat. Of the 3400 mg of sodium the average American consumes daily—more than double the recommended maximum for most adults--nearly 80% is invisible, already in sources such as processed and restaurant foods. This session of Public Health Grand Rounds will explore the consequences of excessive sodium intake and possible means to reduce sodium intake.
