Reagan, 6 months post ci activation, practicing for speech therapy

Reagan, 6 months post CI activation, Practicing for Speech Therapy
Reagan's hearing loss was diagnosed at 15 months of age. Sign language was her first langage. She has worn bilateral hearing aids her whole life and recieved speech therapy and auditory training most of her life too. At the beginning of 2009 she came to us saying that she thought she might want a cochlear implant. As a family, we discussed a CI, the pro's, the con's, the reasons why she wanted one, the goals, the expectations, we went through the process, helped her to see the ENT, audiologist and meet other implant users. When she made the decision, with our support, to get an implant she was "100% sure" that she wanted it. We always said we wanted her involved in the decision making process, we just never expected it to happen when she was 8 years old. Sorry for not knowing how to edit the video. If I can flip it around, I will.

When deaf/hh people speak, the hypocrisy from the deaf culture

When deaf/hh people speak, the hypocrisy from the deaf culture
The hypocrisy is out there. You have some people in the culturally deaf community who will attack other deaf/hh people who prefer to speak but will not attack others who do use their voice in videos without captioning or transcript. I've provided two examples of that and how the culturally deaf community remained largely mum about these two incidents. One was when two videos were produced aimed at "hearing people only" with no captioning or transcript and another by a chapter president of the California Association of the Deaf who spoke in front at the state legislature and not signed at all despite being "proud" of his signing (ASL) heritage. And so I've decided to produce a video for hearing people only or at least those who can understand the spoken word and show exactly what the hypocrisy I'm talking about. And, if you decide to call me out for not providing caption or transcript, start with Deaf Jeff first. And then perhaps later I'll be all too happy to provide subtitle or transcript. Also, don't bother using the YouTube's instant captioning because as you probably already know it majorly sucks.

Using asl to discuss cued speech

Using ASL to discuss Cued Speech
A native cuer recommends appropriate signs for talking about cueing and Cued Speech. For more information on why "Cued Speech" is actually a misnomer in terms of direct involvement to speech, see: cuedspeech.org ~ About the lady in red: Allison Kaftan was born Deaf and has been cueing since age three. She attended public schools for most of her childhood, using a cued language transliterator, but graduated from the Maryland School for the Deaf and Gallaudet University. She currently teaches English at Gallaudet as a Presidential Fellow and attends the George Washington University. Csl: deaf, not dumb/聋哑"与"聋人"的区别?

CSL: Deaf, not Dumb/聋哑
Author John by Sinosplice www.sinosplice.com It's been a while since I last wrote about sign language, but some interesting YouTube videos by Alice (胡晓姝) recently pulled me back into it. Below is the video that I found most fascinating. It's subtitled in Chinese, but worth a watch even if you don't read Chinese. I'll sum up the main points in English below the video. Before I list Alice's main points, I need to first explain some background. In the video, Alice discusses the Chinese sign language counterparts of the Chinese words 聋哑人(literally, "deaf mute person") and 聋人("Deaf person"). The former is the most common way to refer to a Deaf person in Chinese, whereas the latter is the word many in the Chinese Deaf community wishes everyone would use. 哑巴is the word for "mute," and it's definitely not polite. Alice's main points are: * The Deaf Chinese are used to using signs for "deaf-mute" (聋哑人) and "mute" (哑巴) but these signs are not respectful to Deaf people. * Overseas, Deaf communities stopped using the expression "deaf-mute" 20 years ago, and only China persists. * It was foreigners that appreciated that within the character for deaf, "聋," is the character 龙, meaning "dragon," a traditional mythological protector being. That's pretty cool! * The traditional Chinese sign for "deaf-mute" (聋哑人) is loaded with negative connotations, but there is an international symbol for for "Deaf person" (聋人) that we should be using. * The word "deaf-mute" (聋哑人 ...

Sri lankan deaf culture

Sri Lankan Deaf culture
Deaf culture describes the social beliefs, behaviors, art, literary traditions, history, values and shared institutions of communities that are affected by deafness and which use sign languages as the main means of communication. When used as a cultural label, the word deaf is often written with a capital D, and referred to as "big D Deaf" in speech and sign. When used as a label for the audiological condition, it is written with a lower case d. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Technology assures deaf student learns surgery at uc davis school of medicine

Technology assures deaf student learns surgery at UC Davis School of Medicine
Amanda Mooneyham has a 90 decibel hearing loss in both ears, which is considered profound. She can read lips and, with the help of hearing aids, can hear speech as long as the words are spoken clearly and in her direction. In a hospital operating room, where physicians are more apt to mumble than use complete sentences and where everyone wears masks and directs their attention toward the patient, Mooneyham faced a frustrating — if not entirely ineffective — surgical learning experience. Using tablet technology to link the sounds in the operating room to an off-site medical transcriptionist, Mooneyham is able to "listen" — in real time — to every word uttered by the surgeon performing the operation.

Deaf people love it when you do this.

Deaf people love it when you do this.
Firstly, welcome to my bedroom, Youtube. Reowr. LOL This video and all future videos will have video overlays for the "hearie" impaired! =P Sorry guys, couldn'g figure out captions. Too much work for me. And I'm so not speaking English and sign at the same time. So my lovely deaf viewers, turn your speakers down so your family won't make fun of my ridiculous southern accent. =P Basically this one is about how frustrating it can be when people treat the deaf or hard of hearing as if they're mentally slow. People... speaking slower or louder will not help a deaf person understand you... and for the love of all that is holy the middle finger is NOT sign language, and YES we've heard that joke a million times. It's not funny.

His parents felt ready to explore the option and made the decision to go ahead with surgery for him in Brazil. Our deaf daughter marielle hears for the first time with hearing aids

Our deaf daughter Marielle hears for the first time with hearing aids
Marielle was fitted with hearing aids by our heroes at the University of Virginia. This is the first time our 3 month old baby heard sound. Marielle failed her newborn hearing screening, failed a follow up ABR at 6 weeks, and received hearing aids at 3 months of age. When she was 2 1/2 she received an Advanced Bionics cochlear implant in her right ear. She continues to amaze and entertain us every day! At four years old she speaks perfectly and no one knows she's deaf unless I tell them. Grammar, articulation, etc is all age appropriate. She attends two mainstream preschools. (Check our more recent videos on our youtube channel to hear her speak.)

Practice asl and meet deaf people

Practice ASL and Meet Deaf People
SUBTITLE: Hello!!My name is Joy. My name sign ____. I am hearing. I study spanish and education. 2 years ago I studied ASL at my university. Then I went to another country and learned Colombian sign language. I still have a desire for sign language even though I study spanish and education. I can't lose it, it's impossible! Recently I started a new job at my university at the student center. It is a main desk area where student come for help and information. A lot of students come everyday for help. Sometimes they want a printed schedule, or need to find their classroom, or have questions about school events. When I see students who are speaking spanish, I always get excited and start to speak in spanish. But now, with this new job, I meet a lot more deaf students! It is so fun! Whenever a deaf student comes, I want to become their friend. Already I have 3 new friends. But recently I met more than 8 deaf people just because my new job. Everyday I wait, and hope for a deaf person to come.

Asl -deaf studies crisis at san diego state university ***

ASL -Deaf Studies Crisis at San Diego State University ***
Members and Freinds of the United States Deaf Community, At San Diego State University the School (Department) of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) is cutting the fast growing and exciting ASL-Deaf Studies program from 11 ASL I class sections down to only one class section last fall semester and again this spring semester. Also, from 10 ASL faculty members down to only 4 this spring semester. Last academic year we had over 850 students enrolled in ASL class sections from different majors on the campus. Now our ASL classes are limited to only those students who major in speech pathology or audiology, The California State University System accepts ASL for language requirements - 12 units. SDSU students are eligible for ASL as their optional language requirement. Blocking them from taking credit ASL courses at SDSU is morally wrong and improper. This coming fall there will be no fulltime lecturer-coordinator and almost none faculty members. Made an excellent ASL-Deaf Studies minor proposal but it was tabled indefinitely. Students who are not majoring is SLHS are shut off from all ASL language courses for kanguage credit in 2009-2010. According to a recent survey members of the Deaf Community strongly support the concept of offering ASL and Deaf Studies courses under a department of linguistics, a department of deaf studies or foreign languages. Right now the SDSU Students Association is proposing a resolution demanding that ASL and Deaf Studies be kept open to any ...

What is cued speech?

What is Cued Speech?
Cued Speech overview presented by Pamela Beck, National Cued Speech Association. This visual system is designed to help speech reading by using eight simple hand movements (cues) around the face to indicate the pronunciation of any spoken word. Since many spoken words look exactly the same on the mouth (eg, pan, man), cues allow the child to see the difference between them. Cued Speech can be learned through classes taught by trained teachers or therapists. A significant amount of time must be spent using and practicing cues to become proficient.
