www.casaleggioassociati.it Subtitles also available in: Español: www.youtube.com 日本語: www.youtube.com Man is God. He is everywhere, he is anybody, he knows everything. This is the Prometeus new world. All started with the Media Revolution, with Internet, at the end of the last century. Everything related to the old media vanished: Gutenberg, the copyright, the radio, the television, the publicity. The old world reacts: more restrictions for the copyright, new laws against non authorized copies. Napster, the music peer to peer company is sued. At the same time, free internet radio appears; TIVO, the internet television, allows to avoid publicity; the Wall Street Journal goes on line; Google launches Google news. Millions of people read daily the biggest on line newspaper. Ohmynews written by thousands of journalists; Flickr becomes the biggest repository in the history of photos, YouTube for movies. The blogs become more influential than the old media. The newspapers are released for free. Wikipedia is the most complete encyclopedia ever. In 2007 Life magazine closes. Using the internet and social media to search for a job

Using the Internet and Social Media to Search for a Job
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http The job market is more competitive than ever for millions of workers around the world. In America, one reason for that right now is high unemployment after the worst recession since the nineteen thirties. But other reasons involve changes in the needs of the American and global economies. In big developing economies like India and China, high turnover rates mean workers often move from job to job. These days, many job seekers go online to connect with employers. Job candidates want to show they have a lot to offer. But in many cases they simply apply for a job title and list their work experience. Instead, they should describe the talents and abilities they could bring to an organization. That's the advice of Steve Langerud, director of professional opportunities at DePauw University in Indiana. He advises students on career planning and often talks about workplace issues in the media. He says social media sites are valuable when they show the abilities of job candidates and not just their job title and experience. He says: "This really is a talent economy, and we're stuck with most job seekers presenting themselves in a job title mode. And I don't think it matches very well." Steve Langerud also says employers should think harder about the skills they really need to help their organization reach its goals. "Because at the end of the day, it's still about getting the right people in the ...

Net Neutrality - PBS NOW Part 1/2
Is the wild west culture of the Internet about to become a thing of the past? Big business is staking its claim on the information superhighway, lobbying Congress for an exclusive faster lane, which consumers could end up paying for. This week on NOW we look at a major battle brewing in Washington DC over the future of the Internet. We follow the story of Blip.tv, an ambitious video-streaming startup. They're fighting for a corner of the Internet marketplace in the midst of a battle over so-called 'net neutrality' -- the idea that all Internet content and websites are given the same access to audiences and customers. If telecommunication giants have their way, companies like Blip.tv might be forced to compete in a marketplace wherein firms with large coffers can buy access to greater bandwidth and faster Internet speeds, leaving sites who can't afford to pay in the slow lane. Craig Aaron of Free Press, a media watchdog group, says big telecom companies have declared open season on 'Net neutrality.' He's afraid these companies will dictate how we use the Internet. "I think one of the beauties of the Internet is that it's been open to views across the political spectrum. And if you hand the control of the information so that some can be preferred over others, you're going to be handing that control to the big media companies that already control our television, airwaves, radio, you name it," Aaron says. For their part, telecom companies argue that a fast lane on the ...

Tedxdanubia 2011 - andrew keen - digital vertigo

TEDxDanubia 2011 - Andrew Keen - Digital Vertigo
Andrew Keen is an entrepreneur and author. He is particularly known for his view that the Internet and Web 2.0 may be debasing culture. Keen is especially concerned that the Internet undermines the authority of learned experts. In 2006 in an essay in The Weekly Standard, Keen wrote that Web 2.0 is a "grand utopian movement" similar to "communist society" as described by Karl Marx. He describes Free Culture proponent Lawrence Lessig as an "intellectual property communist". His book The Cult of the Amateur, is critical of free, user-based Web sites such as Wikipedia that attempt to provide information. Keen discusses often-overlooked problems with participatory technology and describes the Internet as a mirror of our culture. "We see irreverence, and vitality, and excitement. We see a youthfulness. But we also see, I think, many of the worst developments in modern cultural life, and, in particular, I think we see what I call digital narcissism, this embrace of the self." In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and ...

Not your father's internet

Not Your Father's Internet
[Recorded: August 19, 2010] In 1998 Americans represented nearly three quarters of all Internet users; today they are less than fifteen percent. The complexion of the Web - its users, their desires, their languages, points of entry and experiences - has subtly and not-so-subtly changed. All these new online participants bring with them different values, social norms, and styles of expression. Today's Internet is increasingly a reflection of the world's cultures and its governments, which often have very different ideas about how to shape what happens online. In this video, NPR's Digital Culture Correspondent Laura Sydell talks with Dr Genevieve Bell and Dr. Abigail De Kosnik in an engaging discussion about the changing face of the Internet. Dr. Genevieve Bell is an Intel Fellow and Director of Intel Interaction & Experience Research and co-author of "Divining the Digital Future." Dr. Abigail De Kosnik is an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley in the Berkeley Center for New Media and the Department of Theater, Dance and Performance Studies.

b.TWEEN 08: Censorship, Culture & Chinese Netizens feat. Kaiser Kuo
The conversation continues at bTWEEN.co.uk The speed of change in the Chinese digital media scape is not just revolutionary: it is explosive. With a quarter of a billion Internet users and half a billion mobile phone subscribers, the numbers alone make China extraordinarily tempting to western entrepreneurs and investors A distinct but, in the west, poorly understood Chinese Internet culture is emerging. A familiarity with this culture is crucial to anyone trying to make their fortune or to understand the often contradictory messages coming out of China as it takes its place among the world's digital powers Even as China emerges as a hothouse of disruptive innovation, Beijing's often heavy-handed control of the Internet confounds western observers and presents western Internet companies with difficult ethical choices Kaiser, who has seen China's Internet censorship regime up close from many different angles, will add shades of grey to an issue often painted in black and white. He will challenge western assumptions and explain why Chinese Netizens are less worried about censorship than Westerners think they are.

"This fascinating German documentary explores the bizarre life story of Ted Kaczynski, using it as a prism for the often unexamined history of the Internet. Moyers on america "the net at risk" | pbs

Moyers on America
The future of the Internet is up for grabs. Big corporations are lobbying Washington to turn the gateway to the Web into a toll road. Yet the public knows little about what's happening behind closed doors where the future of democracy's newest forum is being decided. If a few mega media giants own the content and control the delivery of radio, television, telephone services and the Internet, they'll make a killing and citizens will pay for it. In this clip from the upcoming PBS documentary "The Net at Risk" from Bill Moyers, airing on October 18 (check local listings), reporter Rick Karr looks at the issue of "net neutrality"- rules that the FCC eliminated, which allowed every American and every company equal access to the Internet. PBS airdate: Wednesday, October 18 at 9 pm (check local listings). For more visit www.pbs.org/moyers

Egyptians gain a voice with social media service used by stars

Egyptians Gain a Voice With Social Media Service Used by Stars
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Egypt's government faced international criticism when it blocked Internet service to try to suppress the uprising there. But Egyptian activists found other ways to get their message out. Google, Twitter and a company called SayNow launched a service called speak2tweet. They wanted to give Egyptians a way to communicate with the outside world. There are phone numbers for people to call to record a message. An audio file is then posted to Twitter. Anyone can listen to these voice-to-tweet messages at twitter.com/speak2tweet. The phone numbers are listed on that page, and people can also call them to hear the tweets. Ujjwal Singh and AbdelKarim Mardini launched SayNow as an American-based company in two thousand five. Thousands of celebrities use the service to connect with their fans. Google purchased SayNow at the end of January, just days before teaming with Twitter to create the new speak2tweet service. Most of the calls have come from inside Egypt and most are in Arabic. Volunteers are translating the messages into English, Spanish and French at the website Alive in Egypt. People are also showing their support for the protesters through pages on Facebook. Facebook says it has five million users in Egypt, including one million on mobile devices. Social networks like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube also played a part in the protests that forced Tunisia's president from ...

Tough guise: violence, media & the crisis in masculinity

Tough Guise: Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity
www.mediaed.org While the social construction of femininity has been widely examined, the dominant role of masculinity has until recently remained largely invisible. Tough Guise is the first educational video geared toward college and high school students to systematically examine the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the US at the dawn of the 21st century. In this innovative and wide-ranging analysis, Jackson Katz argues that widespread violence in American society, including the tragic school shootings in Littleton, Colorado, Jonesboro, Arkansas, and elsewhere, needs to be understood as part of an ongoing crisis in masculinity. This exciting new media literacy tool-- utilizing racially diverse subject matter and examples-- will enlighten and provoke students (both males and females) to evaluate their own participation in the culture of contemporary masculinity.

Moving day: a fatwallet documentary

Moving Day: A FatWallet Documentary
FatWallet moves its entire company from Illinois to Wisconsin as a result of a new Illinois Internet Tax law. The law would have caused the popular coupon site to lose about 30% of its revenues (FatWallet, www.fatwallet.com, publishes coupons and offers from HP, Amazon, Walmart and hundreds of other online retailers). Fox Business News provided live coverage of the move across the state border as employees paraded 5 miles north on April 8, 2011. This documentary captures that day, the people that were affected and the success of a great workplace culture coming together in crisis.

Roger Smith Hotel Social Media Re-mix
In a coversation with John Knowles @RShotel, president of the organization James Knowles asks, "So how do we reach out?". John: "You let other people do it for you." James: "How does that work?" The idea of others taking your brand into their own hands might seem scary but when the public personalties embrace your identity the reach of your message spreads farther than you can anticipate. To watch as a video blog of ijustine, shot in the roger smith hotel, released through her youtube account, reach 50000+ hits in one day is an exciting example of how social media can bring unexpected results.
