Kit 1 l3 etc cellular respiration.mov

Kit 1 L3 ETC Cellular Respiration.mov
John MacLellan Founder of VIRTmac (www.virtmac.com) and Biology Teacher teaching from one of his 3 kits. Kit 1, lesson 3 ETC Cellular Respiration: Using the phospholipid bilayer sections and different proteins teachers are able to build the inner mitochondrion membrane along with one electron transport chain. This lesson also includes the following model pieces: coenzymes NAD and FAD, electrons, oxygen molecules, water molecules and protons. Teachers are now able to show students the movement of coenzymes as they collide with proteins in the ETC conducting redox reactions. Students will clearly be able to see electrons transfer from the coenzymes onto the proteins in the ETC and protons transferred from the matrix into the intermembrane space. Students can now watch protein Q and cytochrome C shuttle electrons between proteins in the ETC. The very difficult concept of oxidative phosphorylation is clearly demonstrated by removing electrons from the ETC producing water and the movement of protons through ATP synthase. Students can clearly see, therefore visualize, the connection between the oxidation of NADH and FADH2 and the increase in the concentration gradient (chemiosis) of protons in the intermembrane space resulting in the production of ATP. This ETC cellular respiration lesson can be viewed on the DVD that comes with each VIRTmac kit. To purchase this kit, please visit our website at www.virtmac.com.

"cell respiration" - cellular respiration song

A song about Cellular Respiration, based on Black Eyed Pea's "I Gotta Feeling." Lyrics written by, song performed by, and Powerpoint slide show done by a simple high school science teacher named Mr. Hsu. mp3 available (finally): c3po.barnesos.net This song and video have been made solely for educational purposes. Its level of depth and detail into the process of cellular respiration are aimed at High School Honors Biology students (at least the ones I teach). If you find any errors or omissions (ie I didn't mention 1,3-biphosphoglycerate), this is due to the fact that I'm not teaching AP Biology or college-level Biology AND I'm being constrained by describing such a complex biochemical process through a fairly recent pop song with incredibly repetitive lyrics. I actually performed this song for my students in class the day before our cellular respiration test. If you're lucky, you might find a video of such a live performance somewhere in the vast internet (quite a few of them were recording me singing it in class, after all). This video is a result of me taking a simple digital camera and aiming it at my computer to try and record the performance my students experienced (so sorry for the crude recording and poor quality). I have recorded an mp3, and if I have time, I will find a place to upload it for public download, so that other Biology students can listen and study for their tests on cellular respiration. Also, if I have time, I may upload a better version of this ...

What happens when you run out of oxygen!

What happens when you run out of Oxygen!
The respiratory chains in mitochondria get 'constipated' with electrons and shut down! First you gotta watch a vid on Cellular Respiration (Electron transport chain) like www.youtube.com It shows what oxygen does (ultimate electron & hydrogen receptor) If it's not present THIS video shows what happens to the machinery. This causes your mitochondria to go "off line" and until you get some more O2 the only ATP you'll get is from glycolysis and that's not enouh to keep big multicellular organisms like us alive.

Blossoms - roots, shoots, and wood

BLOSSOMS - Roots, Shoots, and Wood
Visit the MIT BLOSSOMS website at blossoms.mit.edu Video Summary: The topic of photosynthesis is a fundamental concept in biology, chemistry, and earth science. Educational studies have found that despite classroom presentations, most students retain their naïve idea that a plants mass is mostly derived from the soil, and not from the air. To call students attention to this misconception, at the beginning of this lesson we will provide a surprising experimental result so that students will confront their mental mistake. Next, we will help students better envision photosynthesis by modeling where the atoms come from in this important process that produces food for the planet. This lesson can be completed in 50-60 minutes, with the students working on in-class activities during 20-25 minutes of the lesson. As a prerequisite, students need an introductory lesson on photosynthesis, something that includes the overall chemical equation. If students have already studied the intracellular photosynthetic process in detail, this video can still be very helpful because students often miss the big picture about photosynthesis. Materials needed include red, white and black LEGO bricks (described in downloadable hand-out) or strips of red, white and black paper plus paper clips (directions provided in downloadable hand-out). In addition to class discussions, the major in-class activity of this video involves the students modeling with LEGO® bricks or colored paper where the atoms come ...

Biology: watson and crick: the double helix

Biology: Watson and Crick: The Double Helix
www.mindbites.com In 1953, Watson and Crick published their findings on the structure of DNA in the journal Nature. Knowing the structure of DNA allows us to understand how it works in the body. Professor Wolfe furhter explains their findings and how measurements from the X-ray defraction image helped define the structure of the DNA. These are the 0.34, 3.4, and 2.0 measurements that were observed in the image, but not understood. He also explains the bonding between the purines and pyrimidines. These are hydrogen bonds, formed in the middle of the double-helix. The sugar-phosphate chains are antiparallel. Finally, Professor Wolfe explains the four requirements of DNA, that it is informational, capable of replication, capable of communicating with cells, and capable of change, and how DNA meets all of these requirements. Taught by Professor George Wolfe, this lesson was selected from a broader, comprehensive course, Biology. This course and others are available from Thinkwell, Inc. The full course can be found at www.thinkwell.com The full course covers evolution, ecology, inorganic and organic chemistry, cell biology, respiration, molecular genetics, photosynthesis, biotechnology, cell reproduction, Mendelian genetics and mutation, population genetics and mutation, animal systems and homeostasis, evolution of life on earth, and plant systems and homeostasis. Respiratory physiology part 1

Respiratory Physiology Part 1
Part one of a three part video discussing the physiology of respiration. The ultimate goal of respiration is to transport oxygen to the mitochondria of the cells. This involves getting oxygen into the lungs (ventilation), getting the oxygen into the blood (external respiration), transporting the oxygen through the blood (transport), moving the oxygen out of the blood into the tissue (internal respiration) and then using the oxygen to make the body's energy molecule, ATP (cellular respiration). Each step is discussed as well as some underlying principles. Lastly, the a brief introduction to how respiratory pathologies can be viewed by understanding the underlying steps is discussed. In this lesson, Professor Wolfe simplifies the concept of mitosis by breaking it down into the functions and forgoing the vocabulary (for the time being). He begins with a review of the eukaryotic cell cycle. DNA is only packed into chromosomes when a cell is going to do mitosis. A chromosome is two identical strands of DNA connected by a centromere. The centromere includes a section called the kinetochore. During mitosis, the nucleus of the cell splits and then the chromosomes form. The mictrotubiles connect to the kinetochrome and allow for chromosomal movement and division. Respiration in plants

Respiration In Plants
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com Respiration in plants, as in all living organisms, is essential to provide metabolic energy and carbon skeletons for growth and maintenance. As such, respiration is an essential component of a plant€s carbon budget. Depending on species and environmental conditions, it consumes 25-75% of all the carbohydrates produced in photosynthesis € even more at extremely slow growth rates. Respiration in plants can also proceed in a manner that produces neither metabolic energy nor carbon skeletons, but heat. This type of respiration involves the cyanide-resistant, alternative oxidase; it is unique to plants, and resides in the mitochondria. The activity of this alternative pathway can be measured based on a difference in fractionation of oxygen isotopes between the cytochrome and the alternative oxidase. Heat production is important in some flowers to attract pollinators; however, the alternative oxidase also plays a major role in leaves and roots of most plants. A common thread throughout this volume is to link respiration, including alternative oxidase activity, to plant functioning in different environments. MIRRORED- BP Gulf oil spill TOXIC AIR QUALITY NUMBERS JUST IN
connectingdots1 — June 11, 2010 — please have a good listen and spread the info...especially to anyone living in the area of the spill. Hydrogen sulfide: en.wikipedia.org Toxicity Hydrogen sulfide is considered a broad-spectrum poison, meaning that it can poison several different systems in the body, although the nervous system is most affected. The toxicity of H2S is comparable with that of hydrogen cyanide. It forms a complex bond with iron in the mitochondrial cytochrome enzymes, thereby blocking oxygen from binding and stopping cellular respiration. Since hydrogen sulfide occurs naturally in the body, the environment and the gut, enzymes exist in the body capable of detoxifying it by oxidation to (harmless) sulfate.[6] Hence, low levels of sulfide may be tolerated indefinitely. At some threshold level, believed to average around 300--350 ppm, the oxidative enzymes become overwhelmed. Many personal safety gas detectors, such as those used by utility, sewage and petrochemical workers, are set to alarm at as low as 5 to 10 ppm and to go into high alarm at 15 ppm. An interesting diagnostic clue of extreme poisoning by H2S is the discoloration of copper coins in the pockets of the victim. Treatment involves immediate inhalation of amyl nitrite, injections of sodium nitrite, inhalation of pure oxygen, administration of bronchodilators to overcome eventual bronchospasm, and in some cases hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO). HBO therapy has anecdotal support and remains ...
