Blue jets & blue starters - the video

Ten minutes of the 22 minute discovery video showing the first captured images of blue jets and blue starters. They were recorded during an aircraft research campaign conducted in 1994 to study sprites (see the related YouTube clip titled "Red Sprites & Blue Jets"). The TV camera is a monochrome low light CCD with a field of view of 90 degrees. The view is out the right hand side of the plane looking toward an extremely active thunderstorm over Texarkana, Texas/Arkansas. Over a 22 minute period 56 separate blue jets were recorded. Until recently, the events captured from this single storm accounted for more than 90% of the total inventory of blue jets that have been recorded worldwide. The "Blue Starters" seen here were first described in Wescott et al. (1996), "Blue starters: Brief upward discharges from an intense Arkansas thunderstorm", Geophys. Res. Lett., 23(16), pp 2153-2156. "red sprites & blue jets" - the video

The original 1994 video clip from which the terms "Red Sprites" and "Blue Jets" are derived. The video was made at a local TV station in Oklahoma City from example events recorded during an aircraft campaign to investigate basic properties of sprites. The clip shows examples of: (a) the first color images of sprites, (b) the first images of blue jets, (c) the first recordings of distinctive radio signatures associated with sprites, and (d) the first realistic determination of the altitude reached by sprites (~95 km). The blue jet images were obtained on 1 July 1994 over an extremely active thunderstorm that dumped 7 cm diameter hail on Texarkana, Texas/Arkansas. The horizon is slightly tilted because the aircraft were flying at close to their service ceiling of ~45000 ft. The clip shows the two jet aircraft that were flown ~50 km apart to obtain stereoscopic views, some of the instrumentation inside the aircraft used to make the observations, and the team. Red sprites, blue jets and lightning

Upper-atmospheric lightning or upper-atmospheric discharge are terms sometimes used by researchers to refer to a family of electrical-breakdown phenomena that occur well above the altitudes of normal lightning. The preferred current usage is transient luminous events (TLEs) to refer to the various types of electrical-discharge phenomena in the upper atmosphere, because they lack several characteristics of the more familiar tropospheric lightning. TLEs include red sprites, sprite halos, blue jets, gigantic jets, and elves. Sprites are large-scale electrical discharges which occur high above a thunderstorm cloud, or cumulonimbus, giving rise to a quite varied range of visual shapes. They are triggered by the discharges of positive lightning between the thundercloud and the ground.The phenomena were named after the mischievous sprite (air spirit) Puck in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. They normally are colored reddish-orange or greenish-blue, with hanging tendrils below and arcing branches above. They can also be preceded by a reddish halo.They often occur in clusters, lying 50 miles (80 km) to 90 miles (145 km) above the Earth's surface. Sprites were first photographed on July 6, 1989 by scientists from the University of Minnesota and have since been witnessed tens of thousands of times. Red sprites

I recorded a long lasting red sprite display with my image intensified camera (night vision device) on the night Sep/6-7/2005. Sprites are electrical discharges that occur high above the cumulonimbus cloud of an active thunderstorm. They appear as luminous reddish-orange, neon-like flashes, last typically around 17 milliseconds, and are usually spawned by discharges of positive lightning between the cloud and the ground. Sprites usually occur in clusters of two or more simultaneous vertical discharges, typically extending from 65 to 75 km (40 to 47 miles) above the earth. Also in the video in one blue jet. Gigantic jets over oklahoma newly discovered type of lightni

Have you ever seen a gigantic jet? They are extremely rare but tremendously powerful. Gigantic jets are a newly discovered type of lightning discharge between some thunderstorms and the Earth's ionosphere high above them. Pictured above is one such jet caught by accident by a meteor camera in Oklahoma, USA. The gigantic jet, at the lower left, traversed perhaps 70 kilometers in just under one second. Gigantic jets are much different from regular cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning. The bottoms of gigantic jets appear similar in appearance to another type cloud-to-ionosphere strike called blue jets, while the tops appear similar to upper-atmosphere red sprites. Although the mechanism and trigger that causes gigantic jets is a topic of research, it is clear that the jets reduce charge imbalance between different parts of Earth's atmosphere. US Navy Blue Angels Aerial Performance 2009 MCAS Miramar Airshow MCAS Miramar Miramar, California Friday October 2, 2009 IN THIS VIDEO, I have combined the entire Blue Angels show into one video - you will get to see the pilots march out to the jets, their performance, and return back to parking. Even though it was overcast, the Blues flew a high show since the clouds were well above 12000 feet. In my opinion, the Blues seemed to be on their best game during the entire weekend at Miramar. You will see the second #7 jet land with smoke coming from the aircraft. I do not know the exact cause of the smoke but it seemed as if it was coming from the right main gear's brakes. Flying in the back seat of both #7 jets are two aviators who will become a part of the 2010 team. I apologize for any bad color and/or vertical lines or American flag intrusion that may or may not be in this video. Unfortunately there were American flags that got in the way of the video during some critical parts of the videos and I have had some camera trouble throughout the weekend. Snes area 88 - stage 8

In Stage 8 I have chosen the mission to fly into the Canyon to take on a boss that looks a lot like the Efreet plane that you can buy with $1000000 dollars. This stage features stalagmites with guns built into them and bomber airplanes. Nothing too crazy until the third stalagmite when two sets of enemies attack at the same time! Blue Angels on safety stand-down The Associated Press Posted : Monday May 23, 2011 16:13:54 EDT ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Blue Angels have canceled a practice demonstration and air show this week for the US Naval Academy's graduation. The flight demonstration squadron made the announcement Monday, a day before the demonstration was scheduled to take place and two days before the air show. According to a statement issued by the squadron, the cancellation is due to a safety stand-down period imposed by the commanding officer. It comes after a lower-than-normal maneuver during the team's last performance Sunday at the Lynchburg Regional Air Show in Lynchburg, Va. All aircraft landed safely without damage to the planes or injury to the pilots. The team will remain in Pensacola, Fla., during the stand-down for more training. Aircrash -- jet blue airlines flight 292 crashlanding

On September 21, 2005, Jet Blue Airlines flight 292, an Airbus A-320, landed at Los Angeles International Airport, California, with the nose wheels cocked 90 degrees. The 8 crewmembers and 140 passengers were not injured during this spectacular landing. Before landing, the crew flew for several hours to burn fuel so that they could land at a lighter weight. The cabin crew emptied the first three rows of seats, and moved the baggage as far aft as possible. The plane touched down at 120 knots and held the nose gear off of the ground as long as possible.
