Most american biology teachers don't endorse evolution hmmmm

Most American Biology Teachers DON'T Endorse Evolution Hmmmm
Could this be partly to blame for the drops in American high school test scores? Most high school biology teachers don't endorse evolution The central theory of biology is evolution, yet a new study shows that most high school biology teachers are reluctant to endorse it in class. In the same week we learned that most American students did not do well in science on a test known as "the nation's report card," a study about biology teachers in public high schools was published that said: * About 28 percent consistently implement National Research Council recommendations calling for introduction of evidence that evolution occurred, and craft lesson plans with evolution as a unifying theme linking disparate topics in biology. * About 13 percent of biology teachers "explicitly advocate creationism or intelligent design by spending at least one hour of class time presenting it in a positive light." Creationists do not believe in Darwin's theory of evolution. * The rest, about 60 percent, "fail to explain the nature of scientific inquiry, undermine the authority of established experts, and legitimize creationist arguments." These teachers, the researchers said, try to avoid controversy by using one of several different strategies that include : * Teaching evolutionary biology as if it applies only to molecular biology and failing to to explain evidence that one species gives rise to other species. * Telling students they don't have to "believe" in evolution but they have to know ...

Kit 1 l3 etc cellular respiration.mov

Kit 1 L3 ETC Cellular Respiration.mov
John MacLellan Founder of VIRTmac (www.virtmac.com) and Biology Teacher teaching from one of his 3 kits. Kit 1, lesson 3 ETC Cellular Respiration: Using the phospholipid bilayer sections and different proteins teachers are able to build the inner mitochondrion membrane along with one electron transport chain. This lesson also includes the following model pieces: coenzymes NAD and FAD, electrons, oxygen molecules, water molecules and protons. Teachers are now able to show students the movement of coenzymes as they collide with proteins in the ETC conducting redox reactions. Students will clearly be able to see electrons transfer from the coenzymes onto the proteins in the ETC and protons transferred from the matrix into the intermembrane space. Students can now watch protein Q and cytochrome C shuttle electrons between proteins in the ETC. The very difficult concept of oxidative phosphorylation is clearly demonstrated by removing electrons from the ETC producing water and the movement of protons through ATP synthase. Students can clearly see, therefore visualize, the connection between the oxidation of NADH and FADH2 and the increase in the concentration gradient (chemiosis) of protons in the intermembrane space resulting in the production of ATP. This ETC cellular respiration lesson can be viewed on the DVD that comes with each VIRTmac kit. To purchase this kit, please visit our website at www.virtmac.com.

Teaching biology in second life

Teaching Biology in Second Life
This video is a multi camera capture of a seminar I gave discussing my experience and some techniques for teaching in Second Life. I taught non majors biology in the summer of 2010. I had 25 students finish the course all but 2 of whom were new to Second Life. This was not a scripted seminar so i had some "rough" moments here. This was primarily intended for faculty who had never seen Second LIfe so some of the back end of the set up is shown. Enjoy! Many thanks to the UNO Instructional Media and Technology group. Biology: watson and crick: the double helix

Biology: Watson and Crick: The Double Helix
www.mindbites.com In 1953, Watson and Crick published their findings on the structure of DNA in the journal Nature. Knowing the structure of DNA allows us to understand how it works in the body. Professor Wolfe furhter explains their findings and how measurements from the X-ray defraction image helped define the structure of the DNA. These are the 0.34, 3.4, and 2.0 measurements that were observed in the image, but not understood. He also explains the bonding between the purines and pyrimidines. These are hydrogen bonds, formed in the middle of the double-helix. The sugar-phosphate chains are antiparallel. Finally, Professor Wolfe explains the four requirements of DNA, that it is informational, capable of replication, capable of communicating with cells, and capable of change, and how DNA meets all of these requirements. But how is this infromation communicated? Through transcription, which is the process where DNA information is coded into RNA, and translation which is the process of converting the mRNA molecule by ribosome into polypeptide strand. This process happens in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, but in Eukaryotic cells translation takes place outside of the nucleus. Professor Wolfe also discusses the three different types of RNA, mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA. He explains rRNA and how is used to help translate the mRNA. This lesson is perfect for review for a CLEP test, mid-term, final, summer school, or personal growth! In this lesson, Professor Wolfe simplifies the concept of mitosis by breaking it down into the functions and forgoing the vocabulary (for the time being). He begins with a review of the eukaryotic cell cycle. DNA is only packed into chromosomes when a cell is going to do mitosis. A chromosome is two identical strands of DNA connected by a centromere. The centromere includes a section called the kinetochore. During mitosis, the nucleus of the cell splits and then the chromosomes form. The mictrotubiles connect to the kinetochrome and allow for chromosomal movement and division. Taught by Professor George Wolfe, this lesson was selected from a broader, comprehensive course, Biology. This course and others are available from Thinkwell, Inc. Meiosis, however, requires two cell divisions because of the creation of haploid cells from the sister chromatids. Ninety percent of meiosis occurs in the first phase, known as Prophase I. In this phase, two very important events occur. The first is the formation of a tetrad through the process of synapsis. Synapsis is the pairing of homologous chromosomes, which form the tetrad structure. These tetrads create areas called chiasmata (chiasma, if singular), where homologous genetic material "crosses over," or is exchanged. This exchange of homologous genetic information will be very important in further study of meiosis. Taught by Professor George Wolfe, this lesson was selected from a broader, comprehensive course, Biology. This course and others are available from Thinkwell, Inc. Monkey business: evolution and intelligent design

MONKEY BUSINESS: Evolution and Intelligent Design
In October 2004, the school board in the small town of Dover, Pennsylvania, ordered its high school biology teachers to preface classes on evolution with the statement: "Darwin's Theory is a theory not a fact. Gaps in the theory exist for which there is no evidence." As an alternative to evolution, the school board suggested "intelligent design," a theory holding that life on earth could not have developed at random. Are there gaps in the theory of evolution that undermine its credibility? What should we make of "intelligent design"? And just what should we be teaching our children about the development of life on earth? Peter Robinson speaks with Massimo Pigliucci and Jonathan Wells.

Gregor Mendel: Early Life --------------------------------------------------------------------- Born Johann Mendel on July 22, 1822, in Heizendorf, Austria (now part of Czech Republic) to a farming family, the future founder of modern genetics excelled in his studies. His family, however, was unable to pay for extended formal education. During Mendel's studies at the Philosophical Institute of the University of Olmütz, he was forced to fund himself via tutoring. His family helped in any way possible, even to the point that his sister donated her dowry to help pay tuition.www.robinsonlibrary.com The pressure and stress of the situation eventually took its toll, and twice he fell into depression, returning home to convalesce each time.www.britannica.com After graduation in 1843, Mendel chose to enter the Augustinian order of St. Thomas's Abbey at Brünn, Austria (Brno, Czech Republic). Upon inclusion to the order, Johann was renamed Gregor. www.britannica.com Monastic life allowed Mendel to continue his studies and he began teaching classes in mathematics and Greek.
