Alternative energy in space?

Alternative energy in space?
What are the ups and downs of hydrocarbon, nuclear and space solar based energy? Hydrocarbon power is expensive, pollutive and has many geopolitical chokepoints. With nuclear energy there is always a small chance for a global disaster. The best alternative is renewable energy, especially space solar energy. In space there are no clouds in space, there is no day and night cycle and there is plenty of room. By placing solar collectors above the atmosphere, it will be at least 14 times more effective then land based solar collectors. Afterwards the energy can be send to earth in form of microwave radiation and converted to electricity. The technology for space based energy already exists.

Made in Germany | Renaissance of Atomic Energy
While Germany is phasing out its nuclear power stations, many eastern European countries are planning to build new ones.Last month's gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine severely disrupted supplies to the region. Now states, such as Lithuania,Latvia,Estonia,Poland and Albania, want to become more energy independent, with the help of nuclear power. Romania, alone,is planning to build four new reactors. Bulgaria's Belene nuclear power plant is already well beyond the planning stage. Bulgaria's national electric company NEK and Russia's Atomstroyexport are working together to build the plant. German companies Siemens and RWE are also participating in the 5.5 billion euro project. Karl Harenbrock went to take a look.

Here is a song I created to help my 6th grade students study. I hope you enjoy. So what we use fuels It's what people need We're just having fun We don't care who sees But these fuels will go out Supplies are limited Need to use renewed energy Uh, uh, uh Oil, gas, and coal are used up Forming from plants remains of animals Built up in rock in layers Keep it trapped below We dig down for it Chemical energy released you burn on it People use fuels for cooking, electricity, lighting, cars, and heating And use them up but they're limited Supplies down demand so great we all need to find a better way Yeah, uh you know what? Need fuels to use again Sun is on my face Solar panels in place Catching solar rays Biogas from rotting waste Geothermal heat energy, volcanic areas blowing all day Wind turbines turning away Water is safe flowing away Hydroelectric power station Renewable sources only used about 5% So what we use fuels It's what people need We're just having fun We don't care who sees But these fuels will go out Supplies are limited Need to use renewed energy Reservoir's flowin' there Hydroelectric power plant Spinning turbine activates generators A large dam Ocean's everywhere we going thermal energy Mechanical is up when tides and waves come And then there's hydrogen One proton one electron Simple but no gas around Always combination From the ground up organic hydrocarbons Separated reforming no pollution Fuel cells combining the two gasses really Hydrogen and oxygen ...

Nuclear power a fading trend ?

Nuclear Power a Fading Trend ?
Watch more news on www.carbonated.tv What is the Sustainable Solution to the energy needs of our planet? Renewable Energy like Solar and Wind Power? Frankly they are way too expensive for all to afford. Fossil Fuels and Oils? But wait! They are diminishing with time...Is it then simply Nuclear Power? But UN sustainable Development Conference refused to label it as a sustainable technology. It didn't even gain any point with the UN Climate Change talks. The situation seems like a ticking clock. A temporary solution that is there till Nuclear Powers can contain their spent Fuel. Only time will tell who chose wisely. The United States has all of the energy it needs right here in its own domestic market. Nonetheless, we import tens of billions of dollars worth of oil from foreign countries every year to run our cars. We impede innovation into energies of the future because our government sticks so stringently to the status quo.

New, clear energy: russia's atomic revolution

New, Clear Energy: Russia's Atomic Revolution
With rising demand for energy, especially electricity, the world is in need of new resources. Fossil fuels produce harmful carbon emissions and green technology may never be able to provide a reliable source of renewable energy. Despite ongoing concerns about the safety of nuclear power, it's likely going to play an increasingly large role in satisfying our needs. Several projects being developed in Russia will hopefully help make nuclear's enlarged role as safe as possible. Fast neutron reactors look to be the future of the industry, while an advanced gas-cooled reactor design could have benefits beyond electricity generation. And Russia's plans for a fleet of floating nuclear power stations will bring electricity, heat and fresh water to isolated populations.

Two countries, two paths, one lesson learnt

Two countries, two paths, one lesson learnt
This is an amended version of the video I did for BraveNewClimate - www.youtube.com In the 1970s, two countries took two different paths in energy policy. Denmark pursued wind power, but failed to replace its fossil fuel power plants. It has among the highest carbon emissions per capita in Europe. France pursued nuclear power, and now has among the lowest carbon emissions of any OECD country. Lesson learned. Nuclear power mitigates carbon emissions and fights climate change. Renewable energy, by itself, is inadequate. If you want real climate action, you must support both nuclear energy and renewables. It's the only way to solve the climate problem, fully, and in time to make a real difference.

Teaching Alternative Energy and Green Power (US)
The Sustainable Energy Module from LJ Create ( LJCreate.com ) provides students with an exciting insight into new and future methods of energy production. ST100 Sustainable Energy is part of a range of interactive teaching resources for green technology, Demand for energy is rising all over the world, while fossil fuel resources are dwindling and the climate is being adversely affected by their use. Science and technology can provide the answer to tackle these issues. Today's students will need a firm grounding in scientific and engineering principles that underpin these technologies, if they are to contribute to the future of sustainable energy. The Sustainable Energy Module is fully resourced with hardware for group demonstrations and individual investigations. By using the on-screen Energy Simulator included with the module, each student is challenged with solving energy production issues. The interactive geophysical simulator contains a number of different ecological scenarios. Used throughout the module, this highly motivational application gives students the opportunity to utilise the various power generation technologies that they investigate. Working individually at their computer, a student makes real-life decisions to meet energy needs, environmental targets and financial constraints. During group discussions, students are always eager to offer their own solution to energy generation problems. Students discover for themselves the need for sustainable energy ...

Citizens' nuclear information center calls for ban on nuclear power plants

Citizens' Nuclear Information Center Calls for Ban on Nuclear Power Plants
Hideyuki Ban Secretary-General Citizens' Nuclear Information Centre Email: ban@cnic,jp Web: cnic.jp Nuclear Power Plants produce hazardous and toxic nuclear waste that will remain toxic for billions of years. For this reason ~ and Fukushima demonstrated that an unforeseen disaster would have unacceptable consequences ~ nuclear power plants should be permanently banned. Investment should instead be channeled into Energy Efficiency (EE) and Renewable Energy (RE). Hideyuki Ban (Mr) of Citizen Nuclear Information Centre (CNIC) said "The Japanese Government and electricity utilities insisted that Japanese nuclear power technology is superior. However, Fukushima showed us that they were so wrong. The fallout from the nuclear reactors contaminated a vast land area, the air and the sea. I want the Malaysian Government and its people to recognise that the Fukushima tragedy could happen to any country that embraces nuclear power." azlanadnan.blogspot.com

The move is intended to turn Europe's largest economy into a frontrunner for creating renewable energy and jobs. Let's find out more. Time's running out for the Biblis nuclear power plant in Germany. It and the country's other 16 nuclear reactors will be closed by 2022. The Fukushima disaster in Japan led Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition government to do a rapid policy U-turn, only nine months after Merkel said she was going to extend the plants' lifespan by over a decade. Now the government has decided to phase out nuclear over the next ten years. [Angela Merkel, German Chancellor]: "This path is a big challenge for Germany but it also means huge opportunities for future generations. We believe that our country can become a frontrunner for the creation of renewable energy and as the first large industrial nation, we can create such a change towards highly efficient and renewable energies, with all its opportunities for export, developments and technology which create jobs." The decision could still face opposition from utilities companies. But nuclear power has long been unpopular in Germany and is opposed by most voters. Just hours before the government made the decision - over 150 thousand people took to the streets of several German cities to march against atomic energy. Nuclear ...

2011-06-01 atomic power is a trap for mankind - with subtitles

2011-06-01 ATOMIC POWER IS A TRAP FOR MANKIND - with subtitles
Michael Palomino (*1964), historian and analist, shows many facts here and proves clearly that atomic power is a trap for mankind. The word "residual risk" is a lie, and atomic power is the most expensive energy worldwide at the end because the controlled demolition of an atomic plant needs that much time as the whole running time, and the "final deposit" of the atomic waste is indefinite, and there are gene damaged and cancer diseases. Therefore renewable energies are needed as fast as possible. Web site: www.geschichteinchronologie.ch; code of the video www.youtube.com

Nagasaki mayor: shift from nuclear power needed

Nagasaki mayor: shift from nuclear power needed
The mayor of Nagasaki City will for the first time call for a shift away from nuclear energy in his annual peace declaration on August 9th, amid the ongoing nuclear crisis in Fukushima. Mayor Tomihisa Taue told reporters on Thursday that the people of his city do not want to see more "Hibakusha," as the victims of the 1945 atomic bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima are known. He said he will call for a move toward safer, renewable energy sources in this year's declaration, no matter how long it might take to achieve that shift. The mayor's appeal on nuclear power generation will be the first of its kind at a Nagasaki peace ceremony. The annual declaration has always focused on the abolition of nuclear weapons. The Nagasaki mayor will read out the declaration at the ceremony, which marks the 66th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of the city on August 9th in 1945. The end of nuclear power?

The End of Nuclear Power?
Discussion: After Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and now Japan, plus a whole host of other 'less severe' nuclear incidents, is it safe to finally conclude that Nuclear energy is just a seriously bad idea? Is it time to for Humanity to stand up and say "NO" to the corporate spin doctors who insist that nuclear energy is safe, despite everything we've just witnessed over the past week? But if we as the people of this planet decide to scrap Nuclear energy, what's the alternative? .

Fallout from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant - Richard Broinowski
Journalist, author, diplomat and Adjunct Professor from the University of Sydney, Richard Broinowski tells the story of the Fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. His talk looks back to the development of the Nuclear Village in Japan, including General Electric and the American state's successful efforts to sell nuclear energy to Japan under the auspices of selling them energy self-sufficiency. Richard speaks Japanese, has lived in Japan and made many visits. He has thoroughly researched the incident and subsequent events and impacts. He is confident that Japan has, post-Fukushima, 'turned a corner' and notes that many Japanese prefectures are becoming less inclined to restart reactors in the wake of the Japanese people's diminishing faith in the technology and its various safeguards. Will we see Japan embrace renewable energy production with their famous reputation for innovation and stoicism? What does the Fukushima disaster mean for the future of the nuclear power industry beyond Japanese shores? What of the Australian uranium mining industry, and its commercial viability? Richard Broinowski gave this public lecture in the Hawke Centre at the University of South Australia in February of 2012, ahead of the release of his forthcoming book on the subject.

Japan shutters last nuclear power plant

Japan Shutters Last Nuclear Power Plant
Transcript by Newsy: www.youtube.com (Image Source: GeoEye) BY JIM FLINK ANCHOR CHRISTINA HARTMAN For the first time in more than 40 years, Japan has no operating nuclear power plant. It's been more than a year since the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster — and every remaining nuclear power plant has been taken offline since. CBS News the background on what led to the decision. "That meltdown made the Japanese more than nervous. And today, protesters demanded that all the nation's 54 remain dark forever." Protests have been commonplace in Japan since the nuclear meltdown, as an investigation into government corruption linked to the nuclear industry continues. Japan's Asahi Shimbun reports, the Japanese public has lost confidence in its government regarding nuclear safety. "...the fact is that official examination of the Fukushima nuclear accident is not complete." But it is a difficult tradeoff. Bloomberg reports, Japan's economy is in recession, and taking a major source of energy out of that equation doesn't help. "The utilities ... have been forced to turn to coal, oil and gas-fired plants... Buying and importing those fuels is driving up costs and may lead to higher electric bills..." Which is why — Al Jazeera reports — some communities are actually mixed as to whether some reactors should ever be brought back online. At least one major electric company — Kansai Electric — says without nuclear power it can't provide ALL of Japan's power needs. "A recent survey by ...

Should Google Go Nuclear? Clean, cheap, nuclear power...
Google Tech Talks November 9, 2006 ABSTRACT This is not your father's fusion reactor! Forget everything you know about conventional thinking on nuclear fusion: high-temperature plasmas, steam turbines, neutron radiation and even nuclear waste are a thing of the past. Goodbye thermonuclear fusion; hello inertial electrostatic confinement fusion (IEC), an old idea that's been made new. While the international community debates the fate of the politically-turmoiled $12 billion ITER (an experimental thermonuclear reactor), simple IEC reactors are being built as high-school science fair projects. Dr. Robert Bussard, former Asst. Director of the Atomic Energy Commission and founder of Energy Matter...

The first nuclear related fatality & accident in america - emergency response - documentary video

The First Nuclear Related Fatality & Accident In America - Emergency Response - Documentary Video
US Atomic Energy Commission Idaho Operations Office SL-1 The Accident: Phases I and II A13886VNB1 Describes this nuclear accident from the point of view of the Atomic Energy Commission. Considering the time, this film report is exceptionally candid about the vulnerabilities of nuclear reactors. This first civilian reactor accident was especially gruesome in that one of the reactor operators was shot into the ceiling by an expelled reactor vessel plug and control rod. Views of the internal wreckage are fascinating. The cause of this accident has never been determined, although operator error has been alleged. Documentaries of this quality are rare in the US nuclear community, at least for the general public. Producer: US Atomic Energy Commission; Creative Commons license: Public Domain The SL-1, or Stationary Low-Power Reactor Number One, was a United States Army experimental nuclear power reactor which underwent a steam explosion and meltdown in January 1961, killing its three operators. The direct cause was the improper withdrawal of the only movable control rod. The event is the only fatal reactor accident in the United States. The facility, located at the National Reactor Testing Station approximately forty miles (60 km) west of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was part of the Army Nuclear Power Program and was known as the Argonne Low Power Reactor (ALPR) during its design and build phase. It was intended to provide electrical power and heat for small, remote military facilities ...
