Mom's story - cambodia - handicap international

Mom's story - Cambodia - Handicap International
Cambodia is still suffering from three decades of war that left it heavily contaminated by landmines and unexploded weapons. Mom, now 22 years old, was terribly injured as a young girl when she stood on a landmine whilst feeding the family's pigs. The explosion tore off her right leg. Mom was fitted with an artificial limb and received rehabilitation at a Handicap International centre in Kompong Cham, Cambodia. She has worked with us ever since, to raise awareness about the dangers of landmines and to share her experience of this life-changing event.

Plastic soda bottle prosthesis

Plastic Soda Bottle Prosthesis
Filmed and Demonstrated by Yeongchi Wu, MD and Hector Casanova, CP; Video and Sound Editing: Josh Waller; Technical/Editing Assistance: Kate Jackson. In resource-limited areas worldwide, individuals with amputations may not be able to gain access to prosthetics devices due to a lack of the materials needed to fabricate them. This simple technique utilizes a 2-liter soda bottle to create below-the-elbow prosthesis suitable for a number of light-duty activities. Please note well that this technique is intended for use by trained prosthetists and it is intended to be preformed only using a plaster cast of the residual limb. Double amputee surfing at seal beach

Double Amputee surfing at Seal Beach
Surfing Seal Beach, California, 2008. It didnt take long before Mohammad Malek figured out he didnt need legs to stand on a surfboard. In less than a dozen waves Malek, a double amputee who lost both his legs from landmines in Afghanistan, pushed his arms down, flipped his hips up to the sky, and was riding the board on his head. The spectators on the sand broke out in applause, jaws dropped. Malek sat back down, and flashed a huge smile. The 18-year-old Afghani had discovered the stoke. It was in 2005 when Malek was walking home from work at a bakery in Kabul when he saw a plant he thought would make for a good meal. He stopped his bike, and went into the brush to find one to pull from the ground. A landmine exploded, blowing off one of his legs. After the shock wore off, he got up to try to walk on one leg to get help. Another landmine went off, his other leg gone. Shrapnel filled his left arm. Maybe I should die, he said he remembered thinking. A group of American soldiers happened to come by soon after the explosions, but they were too afraid to enter the landmine filled area. They threw a root to Malek, which he clamped between his teeth so they could drag him to safety. Malek was brought to Loma Linda University Medical Center in November, 2005, for extended treatment and physical therapy for his injury. While at the hospital, Malek has been active playing sports such as volleyball, basketball and made great progress swimming. It was about a week later when Malek ...

This model can then be modified and used to create a final transtibial (below-the-knee) prosthetic socket. The technique eliminates the need for plaster bandages and Plaster-of-Paris, and requires only: 1.A large container 2.Silica sand 3.An air compressor capable of maintaining a vacuum 4.A metal pipe for connecting to vacuum pump 5.Thin plastic bags 6.Rubber bands The contents of this presentation/publication were developed under a grant from the Department of Education, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research grant number H133E980031. Uk soldier ben parkinson who was seriously injured in a landmine blast performs

UK Soldier Ben Parkinson Who Was Seriously Injured In A Landmine Blast Performs
Alison Chung and Adam Arnold, Sky News Online Paratrooper Ben Parkinson, the most seriously wounded British soldier to survive the war in Afghanistan, has taken part in a "fantastic" charity skydive. The Lance Bombardier leapt from a plane 15000ft in the air, strapped in a tandem harness with an instructor. He carried out the skydive to raise money and awareness for Armed Forces charity, the Pilgrim Bandits. This is a Special Forces charity that has recently expanded to support other servicemen. After he landed in Netheravon, Wiltshire, he said: "It was fantastic. "I want to challenge other people to get up to exciting things like I have done. If I can do it, anyone can. "I want other people who have been injured to get up and live their lives." L/Bdr Parkinson lost both his legs and suffered brain injuries and a broken spine when he was struck by a landmine explosion in September 2006. The 27-year-old was on patrol with 7 Para Royal Horse Artillery in Helmand Province at the time of the blast. L/Bdr Parkinson was told he would never walk, talk or even feed himself again, but has defied medical experts and has overcome severe physical difficulties. It was the second time that the soldier made a tandem skydive with the Royal British Legion Extreme Human Flight Team, Jump4Heroes. He made his first dive on September 11 - the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks and the eve of the fourth anniversary of the incident in which he was seriously injured. The soldier has become a ...

A new life for afghanistan's amputees

A new life for Afghanistan's amputees
Najmuddin suffered a personal tragedy more than 20 years ago when both his legs had to be amputated above the knee because of a landmine explosion. Today, he is a director of the ICRC's Orthopaedic Centre in Kabul where he meets and treats the victims of mines and improvised explosive devices every day. In this film, Najmuddin explains how sharing his personal experience helps patients come to terms with their own injuries: "When someone like me comes to the Centre to be registered, he's sad, but if I roll up my trousers and show that I am like him, then this is a new life for him." Even after a conflict ends, mines and explosive remnants of war such as unexploded bombs, shells and cluster-munition bomblets continue to kill and maim thousands upon thousands of people, many of them children. www.ourworld-yourmove.org

Wheelchairs for kampuchea.mov

Wheelchairs For Kampuchea.mov
Over 10 million landmines were laid in Cambodia during the decades of war. Anywhere between 5 and 7 million of those landmines are still active today. Losing limbs to landmines has sadly become a regular occurrence for the Cambodian people. The average monthly income in Cambodia is $30 per month. The average cost of removing a single landmine is $500. As a result of the Khmer Rouge genocide, 50% of the population is under the age of 14. So many of these landmine victims are children. In March 2011 we will travel to Cambodia to volunteer with an organization called Globe Aware. We will be building all terrain wheelchairs that will enable Cambodians to leave their homes and earn a living and improve the standard of their lives. Please visit our website and make a donation to this cause. wheelchairs4kampuchea.com Special thanks to the makers of the videos I borrowed from to make this one.
