UW Aeronautics & Astronautics: 2011 Aircraft Design UAV -- Flight Test #1
The 2011 UAV, the N+3 Strut-braced Single-aisle Aircraft (NSSA), took its first test flight Sept. 5, 2011 piloted by Chuck Bower. It was a fantastic success, having performed a taxi test first, and using up a minimal amount of battery charge the team went ahead to do a short flight before swapping batteries. After a few laps around the field, the UAV made a successful landing. Data was collected, batteries were swapped and a second flight was made, shown in the other video. UW A&A Aircraft Design is taught by Professor Eli Livne, assisted by Chet Nelson (among others). The test took place at the Naval Outlying Field - Coupeville. The challenge this year was to design a N+3 high aspect ratio strut braced airliner concept, to provide efficient transportation for our future.

AIAA Greater Philadelphia Section: When did you know - Marc Dinardo
American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Greater Philadelphia Section- When did you know? When did you know you wanted to work in aerospace? For some it was a specific moment, for others it was a gradual realization that space and flight had captured their imagination and wouldn't let go. AIAA members of the Greater Philadelphia Section shared their stories that inspired them to work in the aerospace industry. "When did you know?" is an AIAA initiative to learn what motivated engineers and scientists to pursue their careers. In celebration of Engineers Week (E-Week), Lockheed Martin (LM) employees from the Newtown site supported this initiative by giving company engineers and scientists the opportunity to share their stores with AIAA members. The goal of the project was to increase communication among LM employees and AIAA members, and to motivate future generations to pursue careers in engineering and science

May 23, 2012 China_air force pilot enrollment begins
Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) started its final national selection of 2012 flying cadets in Beijing on Wednesday. The enrollment number from high school students will increase by 35 percent over last year, and at least half of them should pass the entrance examinations of leading universities. Among them, 32 students will go to Tsinghua University for a two-year ordinary education and then go to Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics to learn piloting. And 25 will go to Peking University and 30 to Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics to receive education as pilot-oriented national defense students. The candidates will have examinations at different time according to their educational backgrounds. Soldiers of university undergraduates and undergraduates of ordinary or military universities will take the examination from May 23 to 31, and all the admission work will end by June 5. Students of high schools will have examination from June 14 to July 2, and the admission will end by July 10. At the same time, students had to accept flying simulation examination to test their potential. The first round selection started in last August among 70000 students in 30 provinces and municipalities. And the second one started in February and ended in April with 15000 students passing it. Beihang university - avoid teaching here

Beihang University - avoid teaching here
This is for anyone considering working in the Foreign Languages Department at this university. I worked here for two years, and if it were just a matter of the persistent, almost predictable incompetence and indifference of the administrators I wouldn't be posting here. The video was taken secretly by my wife, and shows me in conversation with a gentleman from the International Affairs Office about the way I was ripped off on my last salary - he had no knowledge of it, but essentially admits that I was ripped off, and blames it on the Olympics. Another teacher, Alec Gardner, was recruited hastily last October when they discovered they had too few teachers and promised full reimbursement of an expensive, last-minute plane ticket from the States. He didn't get it, and was told in a text message by the guy who'd promised it: "Things change too quickly in China. Next time make better decisions." A third teacher, Sean Sutton, wrote me in an email: "They were doing the same to me all semester with their creative accounting and no transparency at all. They refuse to tell how they come to certain amounts and made me feel like I was a greedy foreigner when I would ask. That combined with the fact that they never ever paid me on time. It was a nightmare. You know Beihang is a huge bureaucracy and they do a great job of hiding in their towers."

Lockheed skunk works chief ben rich remark to jim goodall

Lockheed Skunk Works Chief Ben Rich remark to Jim Goodall
Famous aerospace author and photographer, Jim Goodall, a curator of Seattle Museum of Flight, citing Lockheed Skunk Works chief Ben Rich We already have the means to travel among the stars, but these technologies are locked up in black projects and it would take an act of God to ever get them out to benefit humanity.. anything you can imagine we already know how to do. Ben Rich Benjamin R. (Ben) Rich graduated from Berkley with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1949 at the age of 25. Rich originally wanted to become a doctor. In 1949 Rich decided to get a master's degree from UCLA specializing in both "aeronautical engineering and dateing soriety girls." Rich came to Lockheed in 1950 after recieveing a degree aeronautical engineering. In December 1954 he was summoned to the Skunk Works by Kelly Johnson as a 29 year old thermodynamisist earning $87 dollars a week. Kelly had requested to borrow from the main plant "a thermodynamicist, preferably a smart one" to solve an unspecified problem. Ben Rich's first assignment with the Skunk Works was the intake on the XF-104 Starfighter. Rich would soon work on the U-2, the A-12, YF-12, Sr-71, and D-21 programs. He joined the SR-71 program in it's inital stages in 1958, and as a thermodynamicist, personally suggested that the Blackbird family of aircraft be painted black to reduce surface temperatures. In 1975 Rich succeeded Johnson as the head of Skunk Works and as a Lockheed vice president in 1977. Rich during this period ...

Strategies in the search for et

Strategies in the Search for ET
Google Tech Talk June 11, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Seth Shostak, SETI Institute. The scientific hunt for extraterrestrial intelligence is now into its fifth decade, and we still haven't uncovered a confirmed peep from the cosmos. For that matter, we still dont know if life at any level of intelligence exists beyond Earth. Could this mean that finding aliens, even if theyre out there, is a project for the ages one that might take centuries or longer? The preferred technique used to hunt down cosmic company is to look for persistent radio signals or laser flashes from nearby star systems. But could this be a flawed strategy? In this presentation, well consider some strategies that new SETI experiments might consider, as well as discuss why its possible that we might find evidence of sophisticated intelligence within only a few decades. Seth is the Senior Astronomer at the SETI Institute, in Mountain View, California. He has an undergraduate degree in physics from Princeton University, and a doctorate in astronomy from the California Institute of Technology. For much of his career, Seth conducted radio astronomy research on galaxies, and has published approximately sixty papers in professional journals. He has written several hundred popular magazine and Web articles on various topics in astronomy, technology, film and television. He lectures on astronomy and other subjects at Stanford and other venues in the Bay Area, and for the last six years, has been a Distinquished ...
