Parlimen malaysia - sothinathan speaks for medical students

In an unprecedented move, the cabinet yesterday suspended Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Datuk S. Sothinathan for three months with immediate effect for going against government policy. Explaining the reason for the decision, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said: "As a member of the government, he should not have taken the stand to criticise the government (in Parliament)." He said that this was certainly a breach of party (BN) discipline. He said Sothinathan, who will still be a member of parliament, will stay away from the front bench for three months. This is the first time the government is suspending a deputy minister from its ranks, Abdullah said after speaking at an investors conference. Sothinathan, 45, who is Teluk Kemang MP and MIC secretary-general, had during a debate on the Crimea State Medical University (CSMU) issue in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday, questioned the government's decision to de-recognise CSMU degrees. The debate was on a DAP motion to discuss the Malaysian Medical Council's decision to not recognise CSMU degrees, affecting Malaysian students. Sothinathan had said many of the students at the university are Indians and because of this, being a BN component party, the MIC is duty-bound to protect their interest. Mumbai terror attack pak bans jammat-ud-dawa, arrests hafiz saeed

Reacting to the UN Security Council's resolution imposing sanctions on Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, Pak bans Jamaat-ud-Dawa Pakistan on Thursday placed its chief, Hafiz Saeed, under house arrest and said all offices of the outfit would be closed. Police have encircled the house of Hafiz Saeed in Lahore and told him he cannot go out of the home. They have told him detention orders will be formally served to him shortly,'' Saeed's spokesman Abdullah Montazir said. Interior ministry chief Rehman Malik told reporters that the JuD had been banned with immediate effect. The group's offices across Pakistan were being sealed and its activists are under observation, he said. Simultaneously, the State Bank of Pakistan directed all banks to freeze the bank accounts of the Jamaat and the four Let leaders, including Saeed, who were declared terrorists subject to sanctions. The others who face action are Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Haji Mohammed Ashraf and Mohammed Ahmed Bahziq. Lakhvi has emerged as the mastermind of the Mumbai attacks. Ashraf is said to be LeT's finance chief and Bahziq a financier, apparently based in Saudi Arabia. Saeed, also the founder of the outlawed LeT, was placed under house arrest for three months in his residence in Johar Town area of the eastern city of Lahore TV channels reported. 9:45pm Friday 18th January 2008 Europe's first fleet of tuk-tuks has reached the end of the road in Sussex. TucTuc Limited, the firm behind the three-wheel motorised rickshaws, has told The Argus it will not be returning to Brighton and Hove and could suspend plans to launch a service in London. The pioneering bid to bring a mode of transport more associated with South East Asia to the south coast of England has been hit by "outdated" laws forcing the vehicles to operate under a bus licence, executive director Dominic Ponniah said last night. The company will give up its right to run the rickshaws at a public inquiry on Tuesday when the Traffic Commissioner will consider whether the firm breached its licence last year. Mr Ponniah said: "Unfortunately, it is felt by the company's management that the archaic legislation under which we are governed is no longer appropriate to operate under. "We will be attending the public inquiry next week and will resign our operator's licence with immediate effect." This is the second time Mr Ponniah has faced a public inquiry for breach of his licence. The first resulted in a £16000, halved on appeal, after the service failed to meet its bus timetable. In 2007 the colourful rickshaws were relaunched as a dial-a-ride service and included new six-seater vehicles.
