Sudanese refugees return to their homeland

Sudanese refugees return to their homeland
The Acholi people are indigenous to Lobone. But, because of the civil war between the Sudan government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army, thousands of people fled their homes, with many going to refugee camps in Uganda. In 2001, JRS was invited by the Diocese of Torit to assist the community in both providing quality basic education and in pastoral activities. After the signing of a peace accord between the Government of Southern Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement in January 2005, the indigenous Acholi from Lobone started to return home voluntarily. The fear of staying in troubled northern Uganda, mixed with a longing to return home, prompted many to return. Guided by its mission to accompany, serve and advocate for refugees, JRS has been supporting education and peace-building activities in Lobone. JRS is the only international non-government organization currently working in the area, and it supports educational activities from pre-school, through primary, secondary to adult literacy, as well as teacher training and peace building/conflict resolution. The new Government of Southern Sudan has put a high priority on developing the education sector, but there are major challenges. At the time the peace agreement was signed, the vast majority of primary schools were operating under trees, and there were almost no trained teachers -- any individual in a village who could read or write a little would gather children under the trees informally every now ...

South sudan: 20000 refugees from the north

South Sudan: 20000 refugees from the north
The violence in Sudan has forced 20000 refugees to leave Blue Nile State. They have taken refuge in the village of Doro. The sudden influx of over 20000 people in Doro caused a medical emergency but also led to problems of hygiene and access to water. Médecins Sans Frontières decided to intervene at the end of November to install latrines and pumps and to treat cases of diarrhoea, malaria, and respiratory infections. Sudanese refugee Lemon Musa: "Our journey from Sali was really difficult. We were very tired from carrying things on our head and our children on our backs. In October it rained on us while we were walking." The presence of these refugees also brings its own security issues. Tension is mounting with the locals from Doro who now find themselves struggling to have access to water. Inter-communal violence in Jonglei State has forced thousands of families to flee. Médecins Sans Frontières evacuated the area temporarily after two of its facilities were ransacked. The team returned at the beginning of January. Many people still hiding in the bush have absolutely no access to healthcare.

Hawa salah, refugee from south sudan

Hawa Salah, Refugee from South Sudan
In 2005, Hawa came to the US with her siblings and her mother. The first day they arrived, it was snowing, and she had never seen snow before. She also did not know any English. After arriving, she dedicated herself to learning the language, and she has worked with the African Community Center to help other new refugees by interpreting and helping them get acquainted with their new surroundings. Hawa says one thing she would change about Denver is "the traffic at 4 or 5 in the afternoon," but she loves living here with her husband and their two children. She hopes that one day her children can go to South Sudan to understand more about their own heritage. © Liz Miller and Denver Women's Commission www.denvergov.org

On the border of sudan and ethiopia

On The Border of Sudan and Ethiopia
www.TravelsWithSheila.com A 90 km mile drive that took three hours from Asosa to the Sudan border town of Kormuk/Kumruk with a total population of 554 people; passing many Sudan refugee villages as we neared the border. Permits in hand from Asosa and then additional permits given to us at a Government checkpoint, we drove another 5 km/3.1 to the Ethiopia/Sudan border. Conversations with military on the Ethiopian side who agreed to let us walk across the Sudan Border (a dried river bed right now), shake hands with Sudanese guards (no photographs of them), and allowed me to photograph the border itself with Steve and I standing in the middle of the border river bed. Ethiopia and Sudan have a friendly and mutual understanding regarding terrorism at this border point. The Sudanese speak Arabic, and they, along with our guides were surprised and thrilled to hear us spout a three word Arabic vocabulary. I can now add Sudan to the list of countries visited. Is that a good thing...or a bad thing?

At Least 12 People Killed After Sudan Refugee Camp Bombed
From: www.youtube.com November 17, 2011 - South Sudan's Yida refugee camp was bombed earlier this week, leaving at least twelve people dead. Following the attack, most aid workers pulled out of the camp, and the people left behind do not know where they will get medicines from. The camp, located on the border with Sudan, is also facing critical water shortages. Khartoum denies US accusations that the north carried out the attack, just as UN food aid was being delivered. Tribute to Manute Bol (a giant on and off the court)
"When peace comes to Sudan,I will know that I did something good.I'm not going to give up you know,I'm going to try and fight, fight, fight" -Manute Bol Manute Bol ( October 16, 1962 -- June 19, 2010 ) was a Sudanese-born basketball player and activist. At 7 feet, 7 inches (2.31 meters), Bol was one of the tallest players ever to appear in the National Basketball Association, along with Gheorghe Mureşan.Unlike Mureşan, however, Bol was naturally tall and did not have a Pituitary disease.Bol played basketball for many teams over his career. He played for two colleges and four NBA teams. He was known as a specialist player; his shot blocking skills were considered among the best in the history of the sport. Bol was very active in charitable causes throughout his career. In fact, he said he spent much of the money he made during a 10-year NBA career supporting various causes related to the war-ravaged nation of his birth, Sudan. He frequently visited Sudanese refugee camps, where he was treated like royalty. In 2001 Bol was offered a post as minister of sport by the Sudanese government. Bol, who was a Christian, refused because one of the pre-conditions was converting to Islam.Later Bol was hindered from leaving the country by the Sudanese government, who accused him of supporting the Dinka-led Christian rebels, the Sudan People's Liberation Army. The Sudanese government refused to grant him an exit visa unless he came back with more money. Assistance by supporters in the United ...

Us rep. mcgovern: the world is silent as sudan arrests, kills, rapes, and bombs its own people

US Rep. McGovern: The world is silent as Sudan arrests, kills, rapes, and bombs its own people
Floor speech on 2-29-12: TOO SILENT ON SUDAN M. Speaker, once again, the world is standing by, silent and passive, while the Government of Sudan wages war on its own people. We have been here before, M. Speaker, when hundreds of thousands of people perished in Darfur before the international community finally woke up and took action to try and protect innocent civilians from their own government's brutality. The humanitarian crisis continues in Darfur. There is no peace, and villagers, refugees and humanitarian personnel still live and work under constant peril of attack. President Bashir has expelled many humanitarian workers from Darfur -- and even today threatens to shut down their life-saving operations. Last May we witnessed the ruthless ethnic cleansing of Abyei by the Sudanese military. More than 100000 people of the Dinka indigenous population were forcibly displaced. They fled to South Sudan, seeking safe haven, where they remain today, in very poor conditions. When Sudanese President Bashir saw that the world was indifferent to this brutal assault, he began military operations in June against insurgents in South Kordofan and more generally against the Nuba people. And still the world stood silent. So, in September, Khartoum launched attacks on another border region. This time, the state of Blue Nile was under siege, with attacks by the Sudanese Army and bombings of civilians. Thousands fled to the neighboring countries of Ethiopia and South Sudan for safety ...

Did denver 911 dispatcher get jimma reat killed?

Did Denver 911 Dispatcher Get Jimma Reat Killed?
All Rights To www.9news.com At 4:15 am on April 1, according to the Denver Police Department, a 911 call reported an altercation between two vehicles near 10th and Sheridan, with suspects continuing north on Sheridan following the matter. A DPD release notes that "the victims were advised to return to Denver to report this crime," and they did so, heading to the vicinity of 29th and Sheridan to wait for cops to turn up. Instead, the suspect's vehicle materialized instead and shots were fired. One struck a man identified by 9News as Reat, who was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after 5 am That's all the DPD is sharing thus far -- but 9News has more details. According to the station, the altercation involved "bottles and other debris" that were thrown at the car containing Reat and two companions. A window was broken in the process. Did the 911 operator inadvertently escalate shattered glass into a homicide? Hard to say at this point. The distance between the 10th and Sheridan address and the fatal drive-by at 29th and Sheridan is considerable -- about two miles. But reports that Reat and company were waiting for police when he was killed raise a whole slew of troubling issues, as Ernest Franssen, Denver 911's operations manager, acknowledged to 9News. "The outcome of the call, absolutely, it's a very sad situation. And we're apologetic for what it appears that may have happened," he said. Meanwhile, Reat's brother, Gatwec Dengpahot, already appears to have ...

The art of a lost boy

The Art of A Lost Boy
TheLostBoysFoundation.org James Makuac is one of The Lost Boys of Sudan. In 1987, a civil war drove more than 36000 young boys between the ages of 5 and 15 from their families and villages in South Sudan. They walked more than 1000 miles to refugee camps first in Ethiopia, then Sudan, and finally Kenya. More than half died on their journey. Makuac learned to paint in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya to preserve the story of The Lost Boys of Sudan. Today Makuac is a US citizen residing in Nashville, Tennessee. Sorious samura

Sorious Samura
Keisha Dyson talks with journalist Sorious Samura at the Students Film Festival in London. Sorious explains why he thinks it is important for people to tell their own stories. Sorious Samura (born 1964) is a Sierra Leonean journalist. He is best known for two CNN documentary films: Cry Freetown (2000) and Exodus from Africa (2001). The self-funded Cry Freetown depicts the most brutal period of the civil war in Sierra Leone with RUF rebels capturing the capital city (January 1999).[1] The film won, among other awards, an Emmy Award and a Peabody. Exodus from Africa shows the harrowing effort by the best of young African male blood to break through to Europe via death and danger ridden paths from Sierra Leone and Nigeria, via Mali, Sahara desert, Algeria and Morocco through the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain. In his recent two projects Living with Hunger and Living with Refugees (nominated for an Emmy award), he takes reality television to its extreme, becoming the central character in the films by living the lifestyle of an Ethiopian villager and Sudanese refugee respectively; in doing this he tries to break the boundary between "us" (the people watching on TV) and "them" (those before the camera) by becoming one of them (albeit for just a month). "Living with corruption", his latest documentary shown on CNN, describes the shocking reality of how corruption is spread across society both in Sierra Leone and Kenya, affecting mostly the poor. In 2010, Samura investigated ...

Spark 4: Donald Zimmerman - A Global Perspective on the US Health Care System
Looking in from the Outside: A Global Perspective on the US Health Care System Dr. Zimmerman tries to "step-out" of a US-centric perspective to examine some of the basic taken-for-granted behavioral, operational, and political premises. The objective of such an examination is to raise a number of questions and hopefully choices about what US health care policy might look like within a global context. Donald Zimmerman, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences with many years of experience with US and global health care policy. His most recent published work was focused on illegal organ trafficking and Sudanese refugees and was the topic of an expert panel sponsored by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In addition to his ongoing work on "transplant tourism" he is involved in a number of research areas, including looking for funding to continue his exploration of how mobile and other emerging technologies can be used to improve the underlying health status of underserved populations.

FSRN South Sudan Faces Humanitarian Crisis as Border Conflicts Continue
Six months ago the Republic of South Sudan became the world's newest nation, officially separating from northern Sudan. But since independence there's been increasing violence in the resource rich border areas of Abyei, Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan and now the situation is worsening again. The United Nations warned that more than two and half million people in South Sudan will require food assistance and Doctors Without Borders says a series of humanitarian emergencies are unfolding as, this month, many thousands of refugees have fled across the border into South Sudan to escape conflict. Jean Pierre Amigo is MSF's Field Coordinator in Maban South Sudan, where they have established a refugee camp. He joined us on a satellite phone. More at fsrn.org

"Walking into class, I knew it was going to be unlike any experience I had ever had at college," says Jake Williams ('13). "SCOM 318 Practicum In Communication: Genocide and Refugee Issues entailed three primary requirements. First, complete the class readings. Second, have an engaged mind and passionate heart. Third, have a positive attitude, an open mind and a smile. When we all met for the first time, our professor said, 'This class is about you. It's about challenging yourself. It's about growing. It's about service learning and becoming an active citizen.'" And yet, says Williams, "No matter how much we learned, nothing could have fully prepared us for what we were about to experience." TEDxDuke - Nyuol Tong - A Narrative of Gratitude
"A Narrative of Gratitude" Born in South Sudan, Nyuol Tong has had what he calls an "eternity worth of experiences both of hell and heaven": He was born when the Sudanese civil war was at its peak of intensity. The war eventually forced his family to flee the village, becoming refugees for a decade in northern Sudan and in Egypt. Brook Comer, an American professor at the American University in Cairo who ran writing workshop for refugee children, helped Nyuol get a scholarship to a boarding school in California in 2006. Three years later, with the help of his teachers, he established the Sudan Education for Liberty Foundation—known as SELFSudan—with the mission of building schools in South Sudan. SELFSudan's first school opens this August in Nyuol's village. Nyuol's a Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholar at Duke University. Among his interests are philosophy, literature, linguistics, human rights, critical international development, and education of liberation. May 7, 2012 south sudan_famine deteriorating in south sudan

May 7, 2012 South Sudan_Famine deteriorating in South Sudan
Poor harvest, continuing conflicts with Sudan and increasing refugees returning home are making the famine worse in South Sudan. Over half of its some nine million population is starving. The food security crisis in the country is rapidly escalating with 4.7 million people suffering from it, up from 3.3 million in 2011, according to a joint report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Program. The situation has got worse and worse as conflicts along the border with Sudan are continuing and food demand of increasing displaced people as well as those returning home is rising. The food crisis is predicted to reach the worst point in July or August this year. About 4000 people live in Mangala Village, which is about 70 kilometers away from the country's capital of Juba and has been a local key aiding target of the UN World Food Program. In their less-than-four-square-meter straw hut, they have no electricity, no clean drinking water, no daily necessities, and the most important thing, they don't have food. "We don't have food and are starving," said a woman. We need the food most, she said. Some villagers have gone to nearby towns to earn a life and the rest of them have no choice but depend on small patches of land in front of their straw huts. They have one or two meals a day, which are corn and vegetables. If they are lucky enough, they may have little fish they catch from the river, while milk and meat are such extravagant food that ...

GOD GREW TIRED OF US: post film discussion w/CONCORD READS & local African refugees
(Sept. 27, 2011) With the City of Concord reeling from an incident of hate speech written on the homes of local African refugees, the program by Concord Reads with the film GOD GREW TIRED OF US took on particular poignancy, as Anori Morenzi on the post-film panel pleaded softly with the audience to help refugees integrate into America. "Receiving them is good...but they'll feel homeless if they don't feel love, because love is more important than anything you can give." The film chronicles the arduous journey of three young Southern Sudanese men who had walked a thousand miles to escape their war-ridden homeland, then made another arduous journey to escape Ethiopia, and eventually were re-settled in the US The post film panel, moderated by Shawn Lafrance of CONCORD READS, included Anori Murenzi from the New American Africans organization, Louise Yatalah from Oasis Church refugee program, and Sarah Alier from Southern Sudan Assn. Abuse of eritrean refugees in sinai

Abuse of Eritrean Refugees in Sinai
This video contains very strong graphic images, not suitable for children and those of you who can't bear such things, yet this is evidence of the atrocities committed upon our brothers and sisters in Sinai where so far the authorities in the country (in the 21st century) fail to stop it or seem indifferent. WE SHOULD NEVER HAVE PEA...CE OF MIND UNLESS THEY BRING THE PERPETRATORS TO JUSTICE OR BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR IT. This part starts with the graves of 4 Africans dug and the corpses are closely investigated. The reporter says these are gross violations of human rights. No human being can do this. The corpses are opened on the sides where the organs have been taken. The place is close to Nekhil in Sinai. One is so fresh that his T-shirt can be seen clearly. The corpses are tied at the arms and feet. One of them has a tight rope around his neck. One of the Bedouins thinks he has been hanged as his tongue is protruding, he suggests. The reporter states that this place is dangerous and there is almost war between the two tribes that the other one can come and attack us. On the hill tops the place is guarded by armed Bedouins. Just 500 meters from the graves is the place where Suleiman, the suspected criminal used to stay. There are remains of food and medicines including glucose for intravenous use. One of the Bedouins exclaims no human, Muslim or Christian can accept this deed. He claims that Suleiman Abdallah Suleiman has two female relatives who work as nurses in ...

The Body Snatchers - Egypt
The world's hidden hostage crisis To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Some of the Sinai Desert's Bedouin are using their new found freedom to turn to crime. This report reveals how they are using their autonomy to torture and murder Israel-bound refugees for hostage ransoms and even body parts. Thousands or refugees from Eritrea and Sudan cross the Sinai Desert in search of a better life in Israel, but many are subjected to a worse fate at the hands of profiteering Bedouin gangsters. Mohammed Al Ramadan was tortured for 40 days whilst held ransom for $30000: "They burnt me with fire, they were beating me with a whip." However, the Bedouins' impunity in the Sinai desert has fostered a trafficking trade with consequences far more brutal than a hefty ransom: "They trade in body parts, they slaughter people". In fact, forensic evidence suggests that many of the African victims have had their kidneys, livers and lungs removed with professional precision. A deadly clash between rival tribes also implies that controlling the refugees route is a lucrative business. With the security forces reluctant to curb this profitable busines there is fear the phenomenon can only get worse. A Film By SBS Distributed By Journeyman Pictures March 2012

Al jazeera : un criticises south sudan bombing

Al Jazeera : UN Criticises South Sudan Bombing
World body says attack on refugee camp could amount to "international crime" as fingers are pointed at Khartoum. The United Nations has said that an air raid allegedly carried out by Sudan on a refugee camp on South Sudan's territory could be an "international crime". South Sudan has accused Sudan of carrying out the attack on the camp in Yida town, less than 25km from the border with Sudan, on Thursday. "We condemn the bombing. The attack ... could amount to an international crime," Rupert Colville, the spokesman for the UN human rights chief, said on Friday. Miabek Lang, commissioner of Pariang County in Unity state where Yida is located, said 12 people were killed in the raid, but the claim has not been confirmed by other sources. Earlier Taban Deng, the governor of Unity state, said: "These people [Khartoum] should be taken to book. They should adhere to international laws and regulations," But Al-Sawarmi Khalid, a spokesman for Sudan's armed forces, said they had not bombed any site in South Sudan's territory. "South Sudan is a state in the United Nations. We respect international law, and it's impossible that we would do that," he said. About 20000 refugees are camped in the area after fleeing violence in Sudan's South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, where opposition groups have been fighting Sudan's army since June. Rising tensions A Reuters correspondent heard a large explosion in Yida on Thursday, then saw a crater about two metres wide, an unexploded bomb wedged ...

European journal | romania - help for sudanese refugees

European Journal | Romania - Help for Sudanese Refugees
The UN-sponsored Evacuation Transit Centre is located in the Romanian city of Timisoara. Since mid-December it has been home to a group of 138 Sudanese refugees. They're waiting for visas to allow them to re-settle in the United States. Most of the group are from Darfur. They fled Sudan at the end of the 1980s,when the situation there deteriorated. Since then, they've spent years living in makeshift camps in Iraq, where their dark skin color made them the target of racial attacks. In Timisoara, they're having an easier time. Romania's second biggest city is known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere. Social workers and religious counsellors are on hand at the centre to look after their welfare.

World refugee day in tampa bay

World Refugee Day in Tampa Bay
The mission of the The Tampa Bay Refugee Task Force: Helping refugees to settle, integrate and thrive through support, education and community. Each year on June 20th, the United Nations sponsors World Refugee Day events in over 100 countries with one common theme--to recognize and acknowledge the courage and strength of refugees. Refugees are forced to flee their home countries due to persecution, but that is not the end of their story. In Tampa Bay, refugees come from all over the globe--Cuba, Burma, Iraq, Haiti, Colombia, Ethiopia and Sudan—to begin their lives again and to be free. Florida leads the nation in the numbers of refugees who are resettled with over 27000 arriving annually. In Tampa Bay alone, almost 10000 refugees have arrived in the past 5 years. Word Refugee Day is one opportunity to welcome our newest neighbors. To let refugees know that after their long journey, they are finally home.

First visit to dadaab refugee camp, aid to somalia "the kenya crusade #9"

First Visit to Dadaab Refugee Camp, Aid to Somalia
During 2011 the Somali's were fleeing their country, due to famine and war, in record numbers to create the world's largest refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya. World news reporters and celebrities were a common sight in Dadaab in late 2011, but now it seems the world's attention has faded and the cameras have left. However, the 500000 refugees that make this their temporary home still need help in creating a bearable environment and moving on to a sustainable life. One such family, the Salat family, is in desperate need of bettering their life. The refugee camp is not conducive to the handicap that 4 of their family members have. Dahir Salat, a father of 6, made a comfortable living as a small business owner in Kismayu, Somalia before being forced from his home by the terrorist organization al-shabaab 4 years ago. Now he desperately needs help to start a business so that his family can survive until he is able to get relocated to another country. Watch this episode of The Kenya Crusade and see how you can give Dahir and his family hope. Impressionable flight 253 patsy pleads guilty in weak case ... because of us support for israel

Impressionable Flight 253 Patsy Pleads Guilty In Weak Case ... Because Of US Support For Israel
This is a joke, right? Everything is wrong about this story and the court case. The "impressionable" patsy pleads guilty before there is a defense presented. This is coincidentally the same day Joe Biden is touring Michigan, and the day before the first day of the trial, Eric Holder stages a fake "iranian" terror show as a diversion. The Israel twist in US terrorism is old, obvious, and revealing. The Christmas Day attempt by the son of a prominent Nigerian banker and business tycoon connected closely to top Nigerian leaders to detonate a chemical improvised explosive device aboard Delta Airlines flight 253 from Amsterdam Schiphol to Detroit was a false flag operation carried out by the intelligence tripartite grouping of the CIA, Mossad, and India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), according to WMR's Asian intelligence sources who closely monitor the activities of the three agencies in India and Southeast Asia. The tripartite alliance of the CIA, Mossad, and RAW were behind the terrorist attacks on Mumbai earlier last year and on December 28 Rupee News reported the three agencies worked together, along with former Afghan KHAD intelligence agents, to assassinate former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto: "The Benazir assassination was pre-planned and executed via triangulation by KHAD, RAW, CIA and Mossad using the most modern radioactive weapons available in the market. The Israeli PM publicly admitted helping India in Kargil recently. The purpose of the covert ...

Lost Boys of Sudan | Sam Ruot | Help Us Build Our School
Sam Ruot is one of the "Lost Boys of Sudan" and part of the DOK Sudanese Community formed in 2002 to raise money to build a school in Southern Sudan. This is Sam's Story. Dok Sudanese Community Association (DSCA) is a non-profit organization (formerly known as DC) formed in 2002 by a few South Sudanese students..the majority Lost Boys who live in over 100 cities across the US The organization is free from tribal and cultural differences which are viewed to be the cause of disunity in our communities. DSCA has over 300 members across the US, Canada and Australia. The main goal of DSCA is to change Southern Sudan through "Education" by providing quality education from K-12 grade for all children. Mainly orphans, disabled, abused and abandoned children through supporting the relevant education and to build the desired infrastructure and supply education materials that are needed for education. Lost Boys of Sudan is the name of an International Rescue Committee program to resettle refugee boys from Sudan to the Unites States. These Boys were displaced and/or orphaned during the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005). About 2 million were killed in this Civil War. In 2001, about 3800 Lost Boys arrived in the United States where they are now scattered in about 100 cities, averaging about 100 per city. Halted after 9/11 for security reasons, the Program re-started in 2004, but Peace Talks were underway in Sudan, and so other refugee crises in other countries took priority. As of ...
