The applicability of title ix

The Applicability of Title IX
Title IX provides an important protection against unfair policies in school sports. Our lawsuit seeks to keep Title IX from being hijacked by activists whose agenda is rigid quotas, not fairness and opportunity for everyone regardless of sex. Title IX says public high schools must make athletic opportunities available to all students. It was never intended to undermine genuine equal opportunity by substituting inflexible sex-based proportional formulas for athletic enrollment. www.pacificlegal.org

William Smith College presents Title IX Trailblazers Pat Genovese, Aliceann Wilber & Sally Scatton
Collectively, Pat Genovese, Aliceann Wilber and Sally Scatton have more than a century of coaching experience, compiling more than 1300 career wins, 21 conference championships, 55 NCAA tournament appearances, and four NCAA Division III Championships. The trailblazing trio has served as teachers and mentors to generations of young women who have blossomed under their tutelage. Hundreds of Heron student-athletes have received conference, regional and national awards for the efforts on the field and in the classroom. Their dedication and leadership has not gone unnoticed. Together, they have 16 Regional Coach of the Year awards and 10 National Coach of the Year awards. Pat, Aliceann, and Sally have been inducted into nine halls of fame, including the US Lacrosse National Hall of Fame (Pat) and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame (Sally). Pat began her career at William Smith in 1971, before the passage of Title IX. Through the years, she has worn nearly every conceivable hat, teaching classes, coaching a wide-range of sports, and fundraising for a department that had its hand in more areas (Dance, Physical Education & Athletics) than thousands of dollars in its budget in the early '70s. Aliceann joined the school in 1980 when soccer was added as a varsity sport. The Herons took their lumps on the pitch in the early years, suffering four straight losing seasons, but in the 28 seasons since, William Smith has posted a winning percentage of .607 or ...

University of texas presents title ix trailblazer jody conradt

University of Texas presents Title IX Trailblazer Jody Conradt
Jody Conradt was nurtured by the small-town, West Texas values of Goldthwaite (pop. 1345), where her childhood revolved around community, family, friends and sports. Her love was basketball. Her aspirations were to teach. Fortunately she is native to a state which takes pride in its passion, independence and can-do attitude. Those traits, along with her graceful, compassionate style, Texas-sharp wit and humor, and desire to bring education and sport opportunities to young women, advanced Conradt into a visionary leader for women's college basketball and women's sports administration. In 38 years as a collegiate head coach, Conradt's players won 900 games - and, more important, 99 percent of them graduated. As the second woman inducted into the Springfield, Mass., Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998, Conradt is known as a pioneer, but also a durable, dynamic and ethical leader who gave credibility to her sport during 31 years as head coach with the Longhorns. From 1992-2001, Conradt served UT in a dual role as basketball coach and women's athletics director. She continues to serve the University as a special assistant to women's athletics.

Eia petitions supreme court

EIA Petitions Supreme Court
An athletic group hopes their suit against the US Department of Education and James Madison University makes it all the way to the US Supreme Court. Equity in Athletics filed a petition in the highest court this week. EIA formed in 2007 to sue the government after JMU cut ten men and women's sports to meet Title IX requirements. An appellate court ruled against the athletics group saying the university was trying to comply with federal laws and EIA's suit was "merely a collateral attack" on Title IX. Even if the Supreme Court denies the request, EIA may have other legal options. A case called "Fitzgerald v. Barnstable School Committee," which is a similar case to the one filed by EIA, is currently before the high court. Depending how the justices rule in that case, the "EIA v. Department of Education, et al." could go back to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals for reevaluation.

Playing unfair: the media image of the female athlete

Playing Unfair: The Media Image of the Female Athlete
www.mediaed.org It has been 30 years since Title IX legislation granted women equal playing time, but the male-dominated world of sports journalism has yet to catch up with the law. Coverage of womens sport lags far behind mens, and focuses on female athletes femininity and sexuality over their achievements on the court and field. While female athleticism challenges gender norms, women athletes continue to be depicted in traditional roles that reaffirm their femininityas wives and mothers or sex objects. By comparison, male athletes are framed according to heroic masculine ideals that honor courage, strength, and endurance. Playing Unfair is the first video to critically examine the post-Title IX media landscape in terms of the representation of female athletes. Sports media scholars Mary Jo Kane (University of Minnesota), Pat Griffin (University of Massachusetts), and Michael Messner (University of Southern California) look at the persistence of heterosexism and homophobia in perpetuating gender stereotypes. They argue for new media images which fairly and accurately depict the strength and competence of female athletes. Using numerous media examples, Playing Unfair is sure to stimulate debate among women and men, athletes and non-athletes about the meaning of these images in world transformed by the presence of women in sport.
