Lamina thermoacoustic engine

Lamina Thermoacoustic Engine
Plans at: www w-haag de / stirling.htm Scroll down to big cyan box... This is my approach to build this simple but really relyable, smoothly running engine. It uses a pyrex testtube and a cut-down glas syringe (10ml) which makes it run nearly noiseless and eliminates the need for lubrication. At the end of the video - where the engine runs - you will recognize that in fact the burner makes more noises than the engine itself. The flywheel is made from brass and acryl glas ( to stick with the light and slim design). It rests on two ball bearings. The big end of the conrod also uses a miniature ball bearing (5x2x1.5mm).

Homemade lamina flow or thermoacoustic engine 3

Homemade Lamina Flow Or Thermoacoustic Engine 3
This might be a final Part 3 as its finished!! I got a pyrex tube from school for free. :P I might make a new flywheel later on but dont be expecting Part 4 for a while unless I get a extra hard drive soon or later. But runs like a champ after a hole day of adjusting and playing with also runs 89% cooler than before so I can touch anywhere on the engine and not get burned or even warm. :-)

Thermoacoustic refrigerator

Thermoacoustic Refrigerator
This is my thermoacoustic refrigerator! It is a device that uses a resonating sound wave to induce a thermal gradient. I built this as part of my senior design project at the University of Portland back in 2006. Questions or comments? Email me at farengrade@gmail.com **Update** So it seems my video has garnered a lot of interest. If you are one of the many people who have emailed me and I have not responded, I apologize. I hope to respond to some of the more common questions that I have received here. I have not made any improvements to the device nor will I for a while... other projects abound. If I was to complete the heat exchangers, I would design them as a series of parallel copper plates inside the main body of the device on either side of the stack. The plates would be threaded with copper capillary tube and would carry water (or oil) as the heat transfer medium on the hot side. Interestingly enough, I got to play with a commercial thermoacoustic refrigerator that fed high purity oxygen through the cold side to make LOX! That thing was a traveling wave device that was quite a bit more sophisticated than what I have here. You've gotta love that deep aqua-blue color of liquid oxygen! Another question I keep on getting is how much it costs to build one of these. I spent a total of about $500 to make it, but I got a lot of free help from some very kind people. Knowing what I know now, I am confident that I could make a much better one for even cheaper, but the most ...

Fellows thermoacoustic cycle (tac) generator

Fellows Thermoacoustic Cycle (TAC) Generator
Lee Fellows' Thermoacoustic Cycle (TAC) Generator uses heat to amplify acoustic waves (sound waves) in a high pressure gas. These amplified acoustic oscillations drive a unique kind of generator and produce electric power. The system can allegedly be built at a very low cost. The TAC is designed to produce power from almost any source of heat energy. When powered by solar radiation or waste exhaust heat from other systems, the TAC has no polluting gaseous emissions. It can be configured for use with a wide variety of combustible fuels, and burn them efficiently in a low-pressure combustor with very low emissions and a controllable heat signature. It can be configured to burn any combustible fuel, including methane, natural gas, LPG, gasoline, alcohol and fuel oil. See www.peswiki.com Official site: www.io.com

Klein bottle thermoacoustic resonator.avi

Klein Bottle Thermoacoustic Resonator.AVI
Just a playful variation on a theme. I used some 1/4 inch silicone tubing to connect the glass syringe to the Klein Bottle via a trocar which is nice for setting the height of the piston and then closing the valve off. I didn't have to alter the syringe with the luer lock tip. You could have gone straight from the syringe to a test tube or as pictured here a Klein Bottle using silicone tubing. The trocar just made it a bit easier to set it up. I put a larger piece of silcone tubing on the top of the piston for added weight - sort of an impedance matching attempt. The glass piston and silicone tubing hat combined weigh 2 ounces. I also melted a deformation in the Klein Bottle doing this video. Quartz would be a better choice.

Twin inline thermoacoustic stirling engine

Twin inline thermoacoustic Stirling engine
A thermoacoustic Stirling engine with twin cylinders, powered by two small methylated spirits burners. Heating one end of a tube of closely coiled wire (a "stack") causes the stack to resonate, and generate sound waves (these sound waves are inaudible to the human ear). Sound waves are basically fluctuations in pressure, and we can use these fluctuations in pressure to drive a piston in and out. Connecting the pistons to a flywheel is not necessary, the pistons will oscillate in and out without a wheel, but the engine is more attractive with a rotating wheel.

Our working thermoacoustic engine - with revolution counter

Our working Thermoacoustic Engine - with Revolution Counter
It's not easy to create a Thermoacoustic Engine. We spent more than 1 month. Thanks to Walter Haag (www.w-haag.de). Then we created a Revolution Counter with a Microchip PIC16F876, Infra-red diodes and a flag paste on the wheel. 20 LEDs , up to 3000 RPM. That means that 1 led is approximately 150 RPM. As you can see in the moovie, 29 of 30 LEDs are lighting, so this engine produces about 2700 RPM. Lamina flow / thermo acoustic engine (my first stirling engine)

Lamina Flow / Thermo acoustic Engine (my first stirling engine)
I picked this type of sterling engine because it looked like the easiest, Unfortunatly for me I soon discovered i had actually picked one of the most tricky stirling engines to get running, After about a weeks messing around trying different piston strokes , Tube Diameters Tube lengths and wire positions I finally got the engine to fire after a few more days tweeking i managed to improve it to this stage all in its taken about 2 weeks! There are no valves , Inlets or Exhausts or displacers in this engine at all. it is a totaly sealed unit reliying purley on thermo acoustics to run , This perticular one will run at upto 5 to 6 revs per second and runs for about 2 hours on a tank of meths

Nanothermal trumpet: thermoacoustic sound source made with a suspended metal nanowire
From the paper "Suspended metal wire array as a thermoacoustic sound source," Appl. Phys. Lett. 95, 163102 (2009); by AO Niskanen, J. Hassel, M. Tikander, P. Maijala, L. Grönberg, P. Helistö, from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, PO BOX 1000, 02044 VTT, Finland. dx.doi.org A suspended metal wire array is used to produce high-pressure sound waves over a wide spectrum using the thermoacoustic effect. It is fabricated with an air-bridge arrays containing up to 2×105 wires covering an area of a few square centimeters. The supporting silicon wafer was isotropically plasma etched to release the wires thereby avoiding heat contact with the substrate. Sound pressure levels reaching 110 dB at a distance of 8 cm were demonstrated near 40 kHz in free field. The devices are also able to reproduce music and speech. They have potential for applications especially in the ultrasound range.
