O's return to 1090 wbal, nats to 106.7 the fan?

O's Return to 1090 WBAL, Nats to 106.7 The Fan?
On Twitter: @longisland495 Two flagship changes for the price of one (region)? The Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals virtually occupy the same amount of radio real estate since BMore and DC are a mere 36 miles away from each other. It's very rare when you have two competing baseball teams in (virtually) the same state changing radio flagships all within a span of 72 hours. Let's start with the Orioles first. For a few years, the Orioles were a key piece of the puzzle that made 105.7 WHFS in Charm City what it was. What lured the O's off of Hearst Broadcasting's WBAL 1090 and onto the CBS FMer was that 105.7 was one of 12 Hot Talk "Free FM"s that CBS belted out across the country as a response to Howard Stern defecting to Sirius (now Sirius XM). CBS (then Infinity at the time) also had similar stations in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC, and San Diego. Free FM was a failure and all flipped to other formats. The Baltimore station was one of the last Hot Talkers to change as it became a sports talk station known as 105.7 The Fan. CBS also flipped their DC Free FM at 106.7 to a similar format with the same name. More on that in a few... The heritage WJZ call letters which already exist on WJZ-AM 1300 as well as WJZ-TV in Baltimore (all CBS O&Os) also accompanied the format change. It is the #1 sports talk station in Baltimore. All of the local programming that was on 1300 WJZ-AM ...

Vincent Lopez and his Orchestra, Irving Kaufman vocal - My Sweeter Than Sweet (1929)
Vincent Lopez (Dec.30,1895 -- Sept.29,1975) was an American bandleader and pianist. He was born of Portuguese immigrant parents in Brooklyn, New York and was leading his own dance band in New York City by 1917. On November 27, 1921 his band began broadcasting on the new medium of entertainment radio; the band's weekly 90-minute show on Newark, NJ station WJZ boosted the popularity of both himself and of radio. He became one of America's most popular bandleaders, and would retain that status through the 1940s. He began his radio programs by announcing "Lopez speaking!".His theme song was "Nola," Felix Arndt's novelty ragtime piece of 1915, and Lopez became so identified with it that he occasionally satirized it. (His 1939 movie short for Vitaphone, Vincent Lopez and his Orchestra, features the entire band singing "Down with Nola.") Lopez worked occasionally in feature films, notably The Big Broadcast (1932). He was also one of the very first bandleaders to work in Soundies movie musicals, in 1940. He made additional Soundies in 1944. Noted musicians who played in his band included Artie Shaw, Xavier Cugat, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Mike Mosiello and Glenn Miller. He also featured singers Keller Sisters and Lynch, Betty Hutton and Marion Hutton. Lopez's longtime drummer was the irreverent Mike Riley, who popularized the novelty hit "The Music Goes Round and Round." Vaughn de leath - are you lonesome tonight (1927)

Vaughn De Leath - Are You Lonesome Tonight (1927)
Vaughn De Leath (1894 - 1943) was a famous female radio jazz singer who gained popularity in the 1920s and became known as "The Original Radio Girl" and "First Lady of Radio". She was also one of the early crooners. She was born as Leonore Vonderlieth in the midwestern town of Mt. Pulaski, Illinois in 1894. Her parents were George and Catherine. At age 12, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother and sister, where she finished high school and studied music. While at Mills College, she began writing her own songs, but later dropped out to pursue a singing career. Later she changed her name to Vaughn De Leath. De Leath's vocals ranged from soprano to deep contralto and easily adapted to the Jazz and radio age in the 1920s. Her first break was in January of 1920 when the inventor Lee DeForest brought her to his studio in New York City's World Tower. Vaughn De Leath sang "Swanee River", in a cramped room, and most of her listeners were only equipped with crystal radio. This was said to be the first live singing broadcast, although some modern historians now question this. By 1921, in the formative years of commercial radio, she began singing at WABC (AM)WJZ, then in Newark NJ, which was later known as WABC in New York City. She had also performed on the New York stage in the early to mid 1920s, but radio became her first love, and she made a name for herself as a radio entertainer. In 1923, she became one of the first female executives to run a radio station, WDT in New York ...

Broadway nitelites - you were meant for me (1929)

Broadway Nitelites - You Were Meant for Me (1929)
The Broadway Nitelites were one of the MANY Groups lead by Ben Selvin. More than likely an aggregation of Columbia Studio Artists... Originally a violinist, Ben Selvin probably made more records than any other bandleader of the 78 rpm era. His career in the record industry spanned decades. He was born around 1898 to Russian immigrants. His father, Max, was a tailor. Selvin started playing the fiddle at the age of 7 and made his first public appearance at the Star Casino at the age of nine. Acclaimed a prodigy, and presented with a gold medal in recognition of his genius, it was planned to send him to Paris for further study, however a reversal in good fortune prevented him from going, but Ben was still determined to succeed by working in and around New York. In 1913 Selvin made his first appearance on Broadway. From there he went to Rector's, then to Reisenweber's and Healy's. When he was nineteen years old, Ben Selvin organized his own orchestra and played at the Moulin Rouge for a record run of seven years. In November 20, 1919 Selvin's Novelty Orchestra arrived at Victor Studios and cut two numbers. The First "Mandy" was released as Victor 18614, and his best selling record, "Dradnella" released in February 1920. He began steady work in radio by 1924, and was recording regularly for Vocalion Records. Few radio orchestras had so many listeners as Ben Selvin's Moulin Rouge Orchestra, which broadcast every Monday night over Station WJZ in New York. His status as an ...

Roaring twenties: ben bernie's orch. - hello! swanee, hello! 1926

Roaring Twenties: Ben Bernie's Orch. - Hello! Swanee, Hello! 1926
Ben Bernie and His Hotel Roosevelt Orchestra -- Hello! Swanee, Hello! Fox-Trot (Coslow-Britt), with Vocal Duet, Brunswick 1926 (USA) NOTE: Ben BERNIE (born Bernard Anzelevitz in Bayonne, NJ in 1891 -- d. in1943 in NYC) American jazz violinist and radio personality, often introduced as The Old Maestro. He was noted for his showmanship and memorable bits of snappy dialogue (his signature trademark, "yowsah, yowsah, yowsah" also spelled "yowsa" or "yowza", became a national catchphrase). Born into a large family, Bernie was a childhood prodigy, by the age of 15 he played violin so well that he was teaching it. He also attended a technical college but as soon as he completed it he broke into music. In age of 20 he appeared in vadeuville shows with accordionist and comedian Phil Baker as Baker & Bernie, but he met with little success. In 1922 he joined his first band and in 1923 he had his own orchestra "The Lads". The new band debuted in 1923 at New York's Roosevelt Hotel, the first orchestra to perform at the hotel, and stayed on until 1929. Ben and his band can be seen live in DeForest Phonofilm sound shorts, playing the seriues of the hottest hits of the season 1924-25 "Titina" youtu.be "Craving" youtu.be or "Sweet Georgia Brown" Ben Bernie was a co-composer of. He was heard on radio as early as 1923, broadcasting on WJZ and the NBC Blue Network in 1930-31, after 1832 in CBS program sponsored by Pabst Beer (during Prohibition they sold malt syrup, the primary ingredient in ...

Ben bernie & his orchestra - livin' in the sunlight, lovin' in the moonlight (1930)

Ben Bernie & His Orchestra - Livin' in the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight (1930)
"The Old Maestro", Ben Bernie was born as Bernard Anzelevitz on May 30, 1891 in Bayonne, New Jersey into a large family. By the age of 15 he was teaching violin, but this experience apparently diminished his interest in the instrument for a time. He performed in vaudeville, appearing with Phil Baker as "Baker and Bernie" but he met with little success until 1922 when he formed joined first orchestra. Ben Bernie and "The Lads" began recording for Vocalion and were featured in an early DeForest Phonofilm sound short in 1924. Bernie's orchestra began recording for Brunswick in 1925 and his orchestra did the first recording of "Sweet Georgia Brown". Bernie was the co-composer of this jazz standard. He stayed with Brunswick until 1933, moved to Columbia (which was then under the control of the ARC), recorded briefly for Decca in 1936, before finally returning to ARC in 1939 and recorded on their Vocalion and Okeh Label. Bernie was also highly successful on radio beginning a national program on WJZ and the NBC Blue Network in 1930-31. After switching back and forth for several years from NBC to CBS, Bernie finally settled in with NBC. His final program was "The Ben Bernie War Workers' Program" and ran from 1941-43. Ben Bernie was noted for always having a cigar in hand and some speculate this hastened his death in October 1943. Al bernard and ernest hare - cindy (1923)

Al Bernard and Ernest Hare - Cindy (1923)
Alfred A. Bernard (Nov.23, 1888 - March 6, 1949) was an American vaudeville singer, known as "The Boy From Dixie", who was most popular during the 1910s through early 1930s. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, he became a blackface singer in minstrel shows before starting his recording career around 1916. He was one of the first white singers to record blues songs. WC Handy credited Bernard with helping his own career by recording a number of his songs, notably "St. Louis Blues". Bernard recorded the song for nine different record labels, the most successful being what Handy called "the sensational Victor recording in which he sang with the Dixieland Jazz Band. From 1919, he recorded solo for Okeh Records. His songs included one called "Shake, Rattle and Roll", about a dice game, which was wholly unrelated, except in title, to the later rock and roll song. Bernard was sometimes billed as "The Singing Comedian", and was the first American singer to record the song "Frankie and Johnny". He also recorded duets with Ernest Hare, in which Bernard took the female singing part, including his biggest hit, "I Want To Hold You In My Arms". He recorded with songwriter J. Russel Robinson as "The Dixie Stars" and, with Robinson, wrote the Bessie Smith feature "Sam Jones Blues". He also co-wrote songs with Jimmy Durante. Later, he recorded with Vernon Dalhart. In 1925, inspired by Dalhart, he began recording hillbilly songs. His 1930 version of "Hesitation Blues", recorded with the Goofus ...

Cleveland's wkrk radio 92.3 changing to sports "92.3 the fan"

Cleveland's WKRK Radio 92.3 Changing to Sports
On Twitter: @longisland495 Cleveland Rocks! Cleveland...Talks?! As was hinted a few weeks ago, there was talk that CBS Radio was planning on expanding their "WFAN Radio Network" into more cities. Now we know that they want to. Nathan Obral and the Ohio Media Watch website have done a superb job tracking this story as developments continue to come in. Here's "for the most part" the gist of the story: CBS Radio has expanded sports talk stations into several cities over the past few years. Dallas-105.3 The Fan KRLD-FM. Washington, DC-106.7 The Fan WJFK-FM. Baltimore 105.7 The Fan WJZ-FM. Detroit 97.1 The Ticket WXYT-FM. Boston-98.5 The Sports Hub WBZ-FM. Pittsburgh KDKA-FM 93.7 The Fan. There are plenty of others as well. The sports binge that CBS has been on is a result of their failure that was Free FM. Several of the ex-Free FMers changed to sports talkers after their Hot Talk era ended. There are similar developments where CBS is planning on putting an existing sports talker at 610 WIP-AM in Philadelphia to 94.1 where a Mainstream Rock station WYSP-FM is right now. In Cleveland, the story is that struggling Alternative Rock station WKRK "Radio 92.3" (once under the iconic K-Rock brand) is about to change formats to another "Fan" station. This one is serving as a double-edged sword. Not only does this reflect the growing trend of sports talkers on FM, but 2011 hasn't been a banner year for Alternative & Active Rock stations. Flips have occurred in Portland, San Francisco ...

Nbc nightly news story on phylicia simone barnes. was case ignored by media because victim is black?

NBC Nightly News Story on Phylicia Simone Barnes. Was case ignored by media because victim is black?
MONROE, NC — The mother of a missing North Carolina teen is pleading for information about her 16-year-old daughter in a case police say might have gained more media attention if the girl had been white. Baltimore police set up 24-hour hotline — 855-223-0033 — and are pleading for the community's help in finding Phylicia Simone Barnes. Phylicia Simone Barnes disappeared while spending Christmas break with relatives in Baltimore, her mother, Janice Sallis of Monroe, NC, told NBC News on Tuesday. She last talked to Phylicia on Christmas Day, just three days before she disappeared from her half-sister's apartment in northwest Baltimore. "I told her how sad that I was because all of the children were gone and that next year, they're not going to be able to go because I was lonely without them. And she said, 'Mommy, I miss you, too,'" Sallis said. Her disappearance has been reported in local media, NBC's TODAY show, CNN and ABC's "Good Morning America." But a Baltimore police official told NBC News that had the missing person been white, the case might have received even more media attention, perhaps aiding investigators in finding a suspect. "I think the question has to be asked. It's not my position, I don't know what goes into these decisions, but this is Baltimore's Natalee Holloway case," said Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department. Holloway, then 18, disappeared in 2005 while on a high school graduation trip to Aruba. Her remains have never been ...
