Probabilistic Dimensional Reduction with Gaussian Process...
Google Tech Talks February 12, 2007 ABSTRACT Density modelling in high dimensions is a very difficult problem. Traditional approaches, such as mixtures of Gaussians, typically fail to capture the structure of data sets in high dimensional spaces. In this talk we will argue that for many data sets of interest, the data can be represented as a lower dimensional manifold immersed in the higher dimensional space. We will then present the Gaussian Process Latent Variable Model (GP-LVM), a non-linear probabilistic variant of principal component analysis (PCA) which implicitly assumes that the data lies on a lower dimensional space. Having introduced the GP-LVM we will review extensions to the...

Rex heat treat - alabama facility

Rex Heat Treat - Alabama Facility
Rex Heat Treat - Alabama is located in east-central Alabama. We are situated between Atlanta and Birmingham just north of Interstate 20. The Alabama location specializes in austempering of ductile iron and steel. We also provide many other thermal processes and light assembly. Martemper: a thermal process that cools ferrous material to an elevated temperature and allows the entire part temperature to equalize before completing martensitic transformation. Austemper: a thermal process that quickly cools a part to a point above the martensite start temperature and holds for many minutes, thereby reducing the potential for distortion dramatically. The resultant microstructure is very tough, exhibiting 15% higher fatigue strength than a quench & tempered part of the same hardness. No subsequent tempering operations required. Aus-carburizing: a thermal process that involves carburizing and austempering in one operation. This creates a very tough (high surface compression) product. Ideal for low cycle, high load applications (gears & shafts). Solution Anneal: (no atmosphere) a thermal [process that provides a homogeneous dispersion of the alloying elements for a given material. Stress Relieving: a thermal process that heats a part to a specific temperature and held long enough to reduce or eliminate stresses from p [previous manufacturing processes (welding, machining, etc.) Tempering: a thermal process employed to reduce hardness and increase toughness in steels and irons ...

Huge crater on earth!

Huge Crater on Earth!
In the broadest sense, the term impact crater can be applied to any depression, natural or manmade, resulting from the high velocity impact of a projectile with larger body. In most common usage, the term is used for the approximately circular depression in the surface of a planet, moon or other solid body in the Solar System, formed by the hyper-velocity impact of a smaller body with the surface. This is in contrast to the pit crater which results from an internal collapse. Impact craters typically have raised rims, and they range from small, simple, bowl-shaped depressions to large, complex, multi-ringed impact basins. Meteor Crater is perhaps the best-known example of a small impact crater on the Earth. Impact craters provide the dominant landforms on many solid Solar System objects including the Moon, Mercury, Callisto, Ganymede and most small moons and asteroids. On other planets and moons that experience more-active surface geological processes, such as Earth, Venus, Mars, Europa, Io and Titan, visible impact craters are less common because they become eroded, buried or transformed by tectonics over time. Where such processes have destroyed most of the original crater topography, the terms impact structure or astrobleme are more commonly used. In early literature, before the significance of impact cratering was widely recognised, the terms cryptoexplosion or cryptovolcanic structure were often used to describe what are now recognised as impact-related features on ...

Thorax Wall Dissection breast tissue, Muscle layers,he chest wall is a critical component of the respiratory pump. Diseases that alter the structure of the chest wall affect the function of the pump, and may result in respiratory compromise or failure. The components of the chest wall include the bony structures (ribs, spine), respiratory muscles, and nerves connecting the central nervous system with the respiratory muscles. Chest wall structure and physiology and diseases that affect the bony portion of the chest wall will be reviewed here. Included are discussions of the following conditions: Ankylosing spondylitis Congenital deformities, including pectus excavatum Flail chest Kyphoscoliosis Thoracoplasty Fibrothorax Abdominal processes, including morbid obesity and ascites Chest wall tumorshe rib cage and vertebral column form the boundaries of the chest wall superiorly and laterally, while the diaphragm constitutes the inferior component. Changes in the intra-abdominal contents or compliance of the abdominal wall alter the mechanical properties of the chest wall through their effects on the motion of the diaphragm. The external boundary of the lower chest wall is the lower border of the rib cage, but internally, this boundary overlaps with the diaphragm, which covers as much as one-half of the rib cage at residual volume (RV). By virtue of this "zone of apposition" between the diaphragm and the ribs, the rib cage is exposed both to abdominal and pleural pressures ...

Some basic concepts of chemistry

Some Basic Concepts Of Chemistry
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com Chemistry is the science of matter and the changes it undergoes. The science of matter is also addressed by physics, but while physics takes a more general and fundamental approach, chemistry is more specialized, being concerned with the composition, behavior, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. It is a physical science which studies of various atoms, molecules, crystals and other aggregates of matter whether in isolation or combination, which incorporates the concepts of energy and entropy in relation to the spontaneity of chemical processes. Disciplines within chemistry are traditionally grouped by the type of matter being studied or the kind of study. These include inorganic chemistry, the study of inorganic matter; organic chemistry, the study of organic (carbon based) matter; biochemistry, the study of substances found in biological organisms; physical chemistry, the study of chemical processes using physical concepts such as thermodynamics and quantum mechanics; and analytical chemistry, the analysis of material samples to gain an understanding of their chemical composition and structure. Many more specialized disciplines have emerged in recent years, eg neurochemistry the chemical study of the nervous system

Crystalline and amorphous solids

Crystalline And Amorphous Solids
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com The process of forming a crystalline structure from a fluid or from materials dissolved in the fluid is often referred to as crystallization. In the old example referenced by the root meaning of the word crystal, water being cooled undergoes a phase change from liquid to solid beginning with small ice crystals that grow until they fuse, forming a polycrystalline structure. The physical properties of the ice depend on the size and arrangement of the individual crystals, or grains, and the same may be said of metals solidifying from a molten state. Which crystal structure the fluid will form depends on the chemistry of the fluid, the conditions under which it is being solidified, and also on the ambient pressure. While the cooling process usually results in the generation of a crystalline material, under certain conditions, the fluid may be frozen in a noncrystalline state. In most cases, this involves cooling the fluid so rapidly that atoms cannot travel to their lattice sites before they lose mobility. A noncrystalline material, which has no long-range order, is called an amorphous, vitreous, or glassy material. It is also often referred to as an amorphous solid, although there are distinct differences between crystalline solids and amorphous solids: most notably, the process of forming a glass does not release the latent heat of fusion. Crystalline structures occur in all classes of materials, with all types of chemical bonds. Almost ...

The solar dynamo: toroidal and radial magnetic fields

The Solar Dynamo: Toroidal and Radial Magnetic Fields
Using the solar plasma flows as input (see The Solar Dynamo: Plasma Flows), the equations of magnetohydrodynamics, and 'seeding' the calculations with an initial small magnetic field, one can compute how a magnetic field can grow and be maintained. This is the dynamo process, the net result being that part of the Sun's outflowing thermal convective energy from nuclear processes is used to create the magnetic field. In this view of the solar dynamo mechanism, we examine the evolution of the toroidal magnetic field, intensities represented by color on the right-hand cross-section, and the radial magnetic field, represented on the left-hand cross-section. To see the poloidal magnetic vector potential, see The Solar Dynamo: Toroidal and Poloidal Magnetic Fields. In this visualization, the magnetic field lines (represented by the 'copper wire' structures) are 'snapshots' of the field structure constructed at each time step of the model. These field lines should not be considered as 'moving' or 'stretching' as the model evolves in time. for more information on the solar dynamo go to: svs.gsfc.nasa.gov

Nuclear medicine at bcit

Nuclear Medicine at BCIT
To learn more about BCIT's Nuclear Medicine diploma program, visit: www.bcit.ca Nuclear medicine is the application of radioactive materials to the diagnosis and management of disease in humans. It is primarily a diagnostic specialty and one of the most challenging and exciting branches of medicine. Radioactive atoms are chemically identical to stable atoms of the same element and can be introduced into the basic chemical structure of many compounds. The radiation that is emitted from the radioactive atoms in the compound permits the detection and measurement of the compound within the human body. This provides a means of investigating normal and abnormal functions of specific chemical and physiological processes within a human being while those processes are going on. Virtually all physiological processes within the body are now measurable and can be "seen" using radioactive compounds and sophisticated instrumentation. Nuclear technology is also employed to assay the extremely small concentrations of certain substances in blood serum and other patient samples. Nuclear medicine is responsible for a host of revolutionary, safe, non-invasive diagnostic procedures that are now available to physicians in many branches of medicine.

Gene regulation i

Gene Regulation I
This course is part of a series taught by Kevin Ahern at Oregon State University on General Biochemistry. For more information about online courses go to ecampus.oregonstate.edu for the rest of the courses see www.youtube.com 1. Gene expression refers to the processes that result in the production of functional protein. Gene expression can be controlled at the levels of transcription, processing (splicing in eukaryotes), translation, mRNA stability, and protein stability. Tissue-specific gene expression is essential for multcellular, differentiated organisms. 2. Transcription factors, as noted previously, are proteins that bind to DNA and affect the transcription of genes located near where they bind. Common DNA-binding structures are found in the diverse set of transcription factors that are know. They include motifs (motifs - structural features) for helix-turn-helix, homeodomains, leucine zippers, and zinc fingers. 3. Leucine zipper structures are found in adjacent alpha helices and contain regions with leucine residues appearing about every 7 amino acids. The leucine interact with each other to hold the strands together and in doing so allow other portions of the helix to bind DNA properly. 4. Zinc fingers are structures with cysteine residues that hold zinc ions and create a finger-like structure that can stick into the DNA helix. 5. Proteins that bind to specific DNA sequences must "read" the sequence of bases inside the helix, usually by inserting a region into the ...

Saturn's hexagon replicated in laboratory

Saturn's Hexagon Replicated In Laboratory
An unusual hexagonal structure found in Saturn's atmosphere has been recreated in an Oxford laboratory. The mysterious 'hexagon' occurs at the planet's chilly North Pole and has been shown to extend deep into Saturn's atmosphere with a 'hotspot' at its core. In new work published in Icarus, Peter Read and Ana Aguiar of Oxford University's Department of Physics have investigated the ways in which such an unusual polygonal structure may have formed. They did this with experiments using a water tank filled with a solution of water and glycerol peppered with white 'tracer' particles. This tank was then mounted on a turntable and lit in such a way that the solution's flow at various speeds could be captured on camera. 'The video above shows the development of a flow produced when a disk or ring mounted in the base or lid of the tank is set into rotation relative to the rest of the tank,' Peter Read explains. 'This differential rotation carries the fluid along with it to create a shear flow in which the azimuthal flow varies with radius. It crudely represents the shear found on the flanks of the eastward-moving jet stream on Saturn at around 76 degrees North, with around the same magnitude of shear compared with the background rotation as on Saturn itself.' He tells me that this flow is unstable and spontaneously develops meanders and vortices that eventually form a six-sided pattern that settles into a hexagonal shape - something made clear by the pattern of tracer particles ...

Richard feynman: the beauty of the flower

Richard Feynman: The Beauty of the Flower
www.FreeScienceLectures.com This video is from 1981. The interview is also the subject of Feynman's book The Pleasure of Finding Things Out. I have a friend who's an artist and he's some times taken a view which I don't agree with very well. He'll hold up a flower and say, "look how beautiful it is," and I'll agree, I think. And he says, "you see, I as an artist can see how beautiful this is, but you as a scientist, oh, take this all apart and it becomes a dull thing." And I think he's kind of nutty. First of all, the beauty that he sees is available to other people and to me, too, I believe, although I might not be quite as refined aesthetically as he is. But I can appreciate the beauty of a flower. At the same time, I see much more about the flower that he sees. I could imagine the cells in there, the complicated actions inside which also have a beauty. I mean, it's not just beauty at this dimension of one centimeter there is also beauty at a smaller dimension, the inner structure... also the processes. The fact that the colors in the flower are evolved in order to attract insects to pollinate it is interesting - it means that insects can see the color. It adds a question - does this aesthetic sense also exist in the lower forms that are... why is it aesthetic, all kinds of interesting questions which a science knowledge only adds to the excitement and mystery and the awe of a flower. It only adds. I don't understand how it subtracts. --- It's Never too Late to Study ...

Omega | liquidmetal® technology

OMEGA | Liquidmetal® technology
When OMEGA launched its Seamaster Planet Ocean Liquidmetal® Limited Edition, the world was introduced to the very first watch to bond ceramics and Liquidmetal®, a zirconium-based alloy. Swatch Group researchers collaborating with OMEGA's product development team created a striking ceramic bezel whose numbers and scaling, made of the Liquidmetal® alloy, appear in stunning silvery contrast to the black ceramic background. The colour of the ceramic dial perfectly matches that of the bezel. The result is an aesthetic wonder only made possible by several new and innovative processes. Liquidmetal®: seamless bonding, remarkable hardness The Liquidmetal® alloy is an amorphous metal -- a metallic material with a disordered, non-crystalline atomic structure. Its fusion temperature is half that of conventional titanium alloys but when it is cooled, its hardness is three times as great as that of stainless steel. Its amorphous structure allows it to bond seamlessly with the ceramic bezel. The Liquidmetal® is a bulk metallic glass alloy consisting of five elements: zirconium, titanium, copper, nickel and beryllium. A bulk metallic glass can, by virtue of its low critical cooling rate, be formed into a structure with a thickness of more than a tenth of a millimetre. Zirconium is an important constituent part both of the Liquidmetal® alloy and of the ceramic material which is made of zirconium dioxide (Zr02). The final, perfectly smooth bezel is particularly resistant to scratching and ...

The objective is very clear; we do not want to or have to contract with anyone we wish not to contract with. After serving our affidavits on the queen we instructed Elizabeth that we no longer wish to play their game and this is all we needed to do. The NCRTS process is the action needed to show that we mean what we say, ie walking the walk rather that just talking the talk. We said 'NO' and we mean 'NO'. Idea evaluation

Idea Evaluation
Panel at 2010 Conference on Entrepreneurship. Description: Inspiration for a new product or service can come out of the blue or from a very deliberate search. Once an idea strikes, what processes are the most effective to determine if the idea is substantial to start a new venture? How does someone solicit and incorporate feedback to morph the idea to make it viable? How does the evaluation process impact decisions on how to structure and fund the next stage of development?

Absorption and adsorption

Absorption And Adsorption
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com Adsorption is the adhesion of molecules of gas, liquid, or dissolved solids to a surface. This process creates a film of the adsorbate (the molecules or atoms being accumulated) on the surface of the adsorbent. It differs from absorption, in which a fluid permeates or is dissolved by a liquid or solid. The term sorption encompasses both processes, while desorption is the reverse of adsorption. Similar to surface tension, adsorption is a consequence of surface energy. In a bulk material, all the bonding requirements (be they ionic, covalent, or metallic) of the constituent atoms of the material are filled by other atoms in the material. However, atoms on the surface of the adsorbent are not wholly surrounded by other adsorbent atoms and therefore can attract adsorbates. The exact nature of the bonding depends on the details of the species involved, but the adsorption process is generally classified as physisorption (characteristic of weak van der Waals forces) or chemisorption (characteristic of covalent bonding). Adsorption is present in many natural physical, biological, and chemical systems, and is widely used in industrial applications such as activated charcoal, capturing and using waste heat to provide cold water for air conditioning and other process requirements (adsorption chillers), synthetic resins, increase storage capacity of carbide-derived carbons for tunable nanoporous carbon, and water purification. Adsorption, ion ...

Protein synthesis: translation process

Protein Synthesis: Translation Process
In the translation process, interpretation of genetic codes in form of codon along mRNA would create a particular protein. The translator is the transfer RNA (tRNA) which has three nucleoide (anticodon) specific for each type of amino acid. The anticodon bond to the complementary codon of the mRNA and transfering amino acids from cytoplasm to ribosome.

Crude oil distillation process part 1

Crude Oil Distillation Process Part 1
An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where crude oil is processed and refined into more useful petroleum products, such as gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt base, heating oil, kerosene, and liquefied petroleum gas. Oil refineries are typically large sprawling industrial complexes with extensive piping running throughout, carrying streams of fluids between large chemical processing units. In many ways, oil refineries use much of the technology of, and can be thought of as types of chemical plants. The crude oil feedstock has typically been processed by an oil production plant. There is usually an oil depot (tank farm) at or near an oil refinery for storage of bulk liquid products.

Reverse osmosis process

Reverse Osmosis Process
www.pakwatercare.org How Does Reverse Osmosis Work? A semipermeable membrane, like the membrane of a cell wall or a bladder, is selective about what it allows to pass through, and what it prevents from passing. These membranes in general pass water very easily because of its small molecular size, but also prevent many other contaminants from passing by trapping them. Water will typically be present on both sides of the membrane, with each side having a different concentration of dissolved minerals. Since the water in the less concentrated solution seeks to dilute the more concentrated solution, water will pass through the membrane from the lower concentration side to the greater concentration side. Eventually, osmotic pressure (seen in the diagram below as the pressure created by the difference in water levels) will counter the diffusion process exactly, and an equilibrium will form. The process of reverse osmosis forces water with a greater concentration of contaminants (the source water) into a tank containing water with an extremely low concentration of contaminants (the processed water). High water pressure on the source side is used to "reverse" the natural osmotic process, with the semi-permeable membrane still permitting the passage of water while rejecting most of the other contaminants. The specific process through which this occurs is called ion exclusion, in which a concentration of ions at the membrane surface form a barrier that allows other water molecules ...

Airport body scans: an illuminati-reptilian device to sabotage human dna???

AIRPORT BODY SCANS: An Illuminati-reptilian device to sabotage human DNA???
People all over the world are concerned about the exposing of the intimate parts of their bodies, by airport scanners. But what most of them ignore is that these devices fire an amount of Terahertz radiation on their bodies. According to some scientists, these high frequency waves aka "T-rays" or "Thz waves", can change absolutely any molecular structure. Some experts go further and claim that these pulses can "unzip" te DNA strand, affecting biological processes as gene expression and the own DNA replication, besides speed development of cancer and genetic mutations. And as would be expected, the Cartel's scientists and corporate media have ensured that whether or not T-rays severely damage biological systems is to be a "controversial subject": this is the usual Cartel stratagem whenever their agenda is on shaky grounds. The general conspiracy theorists have been alleging that these body scans are being purposely used to damage the human DNA, specially the so called "Junk DNA", that corresponds to more than 90% of our genetic code and according to metaphysical and holistic researchers, if activated, can increase our consciousness and improve the health of the body. Ayahuasca effects

Ayahuasca Effects
Ayahuasca's Transformative Power Exactly what transpires when one drinks Ayahuasca is an enigma to many. Studies investigating its history and use often fail to explain the remarkably transformative processes it initiates. Ayahuasca's various effects progress through cathartic, abreactive and spiritual stages. Experience of universal time is an important element in this process. Each experience carries one beyond the previous ones, with revelations according to the character, qyality, and depth of previous experiences and the travelers' level of consciousness. Ayahuasca cannot be qualified by consistency of its effects. The psycho-spiritual centers of consciousness activated by Ayahuasca cannot be programmed, though the journey can be guided and influenced by competent shamans and facilitators. The pharmacological properties of the psychoactive compound in interaction with the biological antecedents are not enough to define the influence on the psyche. The brew always interacts with the psycho-emotional and spiritual set of each individual and the construct of the setting in which it is taken. Among these, personal attitude, purpose, personality, mood and prior experience most influence the character of the experience. The composite effect of these factors influences the nature and content of the experiential journey. External influences, especially physical environment and experienced guidance, are of utmost importance in guiding the journey. For example, an Ayahuasca ...

The leaf

The Leaf
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com leaf is an above-ground plant organ specialized for photosynthesis. For this purpose, a leaf is typically flat (laminar) and thin. There is continued debate about whether the flatness of leaves evolved to expose the chloroplasts to more light or to increase the absorption of carbon dioxide. In either case, the adaption was made at the expense of water loss. In the Devonian period, when carbon dioxide concentration was at several times its present value, plants did not have leaves or flat stems. Many bryophytes have flat, photosynthetic organs, but these are not true leaves. Neither are the microphylls of lycophytes. The leaves of ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms are variously referred to as macrophyll, megaphylls, or euphylls. Leaves are also the sites in most plants where transpiration and guttation take place. Leaves can store food and water, and are modified in some plants for other purposes. The comparable structures of ferns are correctly referred to as fronds. Furthermore, leaves are prominent in the human diet as leaf vegetables. A structurally complete leaf of an angiosperm consists of a petiole (leaf stem), a lamina (leaf blade), and stipules (small processes located to either side of the base of the petiole). The petiole attaches to the stem at a point called the "leaf axil." Not every species produces leaves with all of the aforementioned structural components. In certain species, paired stipules are not obvious or are ...

Soap finishing line

SOAP FINISHING LINE
The finishing line allows, in five main processes, to transform the pellets coming from the dryer into stamped or printed soap bars. Dosing and mixing. Soap base is dosed and mixed together with liquid and solid additives which are components of final formula. Dosing of additives can be dona both in automatic and in hand mode. Refining. The soap cristalline structure is changed by the combined action of pressure and shear obtaind by the working of plodders and roll-mill. Extrusion. The final stage of a duplex plodder is used to extrude, under vacuum, a continuous soap bar that is previously refined. Cutting. The continuous soap bar coming from a duple vacuum plodder must be cut, with wanted lengths, in smaller bars or in engravied finished soaps. The cut bars are then transferred to following stampers for the final working process. Stamping. Banded or bandless soaps are stamped by vertical or horizontal presses. Soaps can be stamped on 2, 4 or 6 faces. Soaptec finishing lines can produce toilet soap, laundry soap, transparent soap, syndet soap and marbled soap.

Please Subscribe To The Evolution Documentary YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com Broadcast (1998) Over the past 4 billion years, life has evolved from simple single celled organisms into the tremendous variety of plants and animals that exist today. As scientists learn more about the Earth's history, they are realizing that the forces which have shaped the planet have also had a profound effect on the course of evolution. The movement of the tectonic plates has rearranged the continents, providing ever-changing conditions for living organisms, stimulating the evolution of new life-forms. Violent volcanic eruptions, meteorite impacts and drastic climatic changes have triggered mass extinctions, causing setbacks to life on Earth. But the same events have provided new opportunities for the survivors. Earth is alive, but not just teeming with life; it is a living entity. It moves, deep inside and on the surface. Moreover, scientists have now discovered that the origins of life itself depended on the active geology of our planet. The earth is more than simply our birthplace, it is quite literally the thing that gave us birth. Earth Story unravels the secrets of our planet and brings it alive. The series took three years to make and was filmed all over the world, from the craters of active volcanoes to the ocean floor. Where the cameras could not go, in both time and space, the latest animation techniques take over. Combining live action footage with state of the art computer ...
