Structure of neuron

Structure Of Neuron
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com Structural classification Most neurons can be anatomically characterized as: •Unipolar or pseudounipolar: dendrite and axon emerging from same process. •Bipolar: axon and single dendrite on opposite ends of the soma. •Multipolar: more than two dendrites: oGolgi I: neurons with long-projecting axonal processes; examples are pyramidal cells, Purkinje cells, and anterior horn cells. oGolgi II: neurons whose axonal process projects locally; the best example is the granule cell. Furthermore, some unique neuronal types can be identified according to their location in the nervous system and distinct shape. Some examples are: •Basket cells, interneurons that form a dense plexus of terminals around the soma of target cells, found in the cortex and cerebellum. •Betz cells, large motor neurons. •Medium spiny neurons, most neurons in the corpus striatum. •Purkinje cells, huge neurons in the cerebellum, a type of Golgi I multipolar neuron. •Pyramidal cells, neurons with triangular soma, a type of Golgi I. •Renshaw cells, neurons with both ends linked to alpha motor neurons. •Granule cells, a type of Golgi II neuron. •anterior horn cells, motoneurons located in the spinal cord.

Braintrust: what neuroscience tells us about morality

Braintrust: What Neuroscience Tells Us about Morality
What is morality? Where does it come from? And why do most of us heed its call most of the time? In Braintrust, neurophilosophy pioneer Patricia Churchland argues that morality originates in the biology of the brain. She describes the "neurobiological platform of bonding" that, modified by evolutionary pressures and cultural values, has led to human styles of moral behavior. The result is a provocative genealogy of morals that asks us to reevaluate the priority given to religion, absolute rules, and pure reason in accounting for the basis of morality. Moral values, Churchland argues, are rooted in a behavior common to all mammals--the caring for offspring. The evolved structure, processes, and chemistry of the brain incline humans to strive not only for self-preservation but for the well-being of allied selves--first offspring, then mates, kin, and so on, in wider and wider "caring" circles. Separation and exclusion cause pain, and the company of loved ones causes pleasure; responding to feelings of social pain and pleasure, brains adjust their circuitry to local customs. In this way, caring is apportioned, conscience molded, and moral intuitions instilled. A key part of the story is oxytocin, an ancient body-and-brain molecule that, by decreasing the stress response, allows humans to develop the trust in one another necessary for the development of close-knit ties, social institutions, and morality. A major new account of what really makes us moral, Braintrust challenges ...

Structural geology research with dr. randy merrett

Structural Geology Research with Dr. Randy Merrett
Dr. Randy Merrett is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas. Dr. Marrett's research concentrates on deformation processes in the upper continental crust where folds, faults, and opening-mode fractures are the most important products. This work is applicable to a wide range of human concerns such as natural hazards (eg, earthquakes, volcanoes) and the flow of fluids through rock (eg, hydrocarbons, water, contaminants). Some common themes that relate his disparate interests are quantitative field observations and analysis, especially using techniques that address spatial and size scaling of structures. Dr. Marrett currently has on-going projects that address active faulting and geyser eruption patterns in the Central Andes of Argentina and Chile, detachment folding and curved orogenic belt development in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Mexico, and opening-mode fracturing in numerous areas.

Quantum physics & consciousness

Quantum Physics & Consciousness
Quantum Physics & Consciousness What has physics got to do with it? - Subatomic physics and the possible nature of consciousness In the most simple terms consciousness refers to the unified sense of awareness that we all have of who we are and what we are. It is the unique subjective inner world that we all experience during our daily lives. Understanding the nature of consciousness and the self, has become one of the most intriguing mysteries. Although at present no one yet knows how our sense of self and consciousness arises, there have been many theories put forward (for more information please review the mind body problem). The current lack of plausible biological mechanisms to account for how consciousness and our sense of self arises has led some to present some other possible theories. Stuart Hameroff, an anesthetist at the University of Arizona, and Roger Penrose, a mathematician from the University of Cambridge, have argued that consciousness may be a property of processes occurring within small protein structures within brain cells. According to these scientists however these processes are not taking place where brain cells connect with each other, but at a level far smaller than that. They argue that there is a process going on at the subatomic or quantum level - a level where things are even much smaller than atoms. The quantum processes theory put forward by Hameroff and Penrose is based upon the principle that there are two levels of explanation in physics ...

Great principles of computing - peter j. denning

Great Principles of Computing - Peter J. Denning
[Recorded March 29, 2007] Computing is no longer a science of the artificial. It is a science of natural information processes. The remarkable shift to this realization occurred only in the last decade. Computing is mature enough to be described in terms of its fundamental principles. The principles reveal computing's deep structure and how it applies in many fields. They reveal common aspects of technology and create opportunities for innovation. They open entirely new ways to stimulate the excitement and curiosity of young people about the world of computing. In the 1940s, computation was seen as a tool for solving equations, cracking codes, analyzing data, and managing business processes. By the 1980s, computation had advanced to become a new method in science, joining the traditional theory and experiment. During the 1990s, computation advanced even further as people in many fields discovered they were dealing with information processes buried in their deep structures -- for example, quantum waves in physics, DNA in biology, brain patterns in cognitive science, information flows in economic systems. Computation has entered everyday life with new ways to solve problems, new forms of art, music, motion pictures, and commerce, new approaches to learning, and even new slang expressions. In this lecture, Peter Denning shares his work on the great principles of computing. His taxonomy will help you understand computing and how it works in your world. You will see what makes ...

6. the structures of power

6. The Structures of Power
Early Modern England: Politics, Religion, and Society under the Tudors and Stuarts (HIST 251) Professor Wrightson begins by discussing recent trends in English political history, which has expanded from focusing solely on institutions to include analysis of political culture. After this, the formal institutions of government, such as the various law courts, the offices of royal administration, and Parliament, are briefly defined and situated. In the remainder of the lecture, Professor Wrightson explores the dynamics of royal power and authority. The impact of the personalities of Henry VII and Henry VIII on their individual reigns are noted and their relationships with the nobility are focused upon. Professor Wrightson addresses the manner in which the early Tudor kings solidified and extended royal authority through the uses of propaganda, patronage, consultations, and coercion. He ends by signaling the expansion of government which was to occur post-1530 as a result of the issues of the succession and religious change. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Early Tudors 06:09 - Chapter 2. Microtubules - electric oscillating structures in living cells (google workshop on quantum biology)

Microtubules - Electric Oscillating Structures in Living Cells (Google Workshop on Quantum Biology)
Google Workshop on Quantum Biology Microtubules -- Electric Oscillating Structures in Living Cells Presented by Jiří Pokorný October 22, 2010 ABSTRACT Fröhlich formulated hypothesis of coherent electromagnetic activity in biological systems. The full featured Fröhlich's system is described by two complementary nonlinear models: the one with spectral energy channeling and energy condensation in the lowest frequency mode, the other with creation of a ferroelectric state and a potential valley for oscillation amplitudes. Electric and electromagnetic oscillations in various biological systems were found in a wide frequency range from acoustic to visible and UV bands but their internal physical mechanisms are rather unclear. We proved that electromagnetic oscillations at 8 MHz are generated by microtubules in cells (Pokorný et al., Electro- Magnetobiol. 20, 2001, 371). As the greatest activity of living cells is exhibited in the M phase the measurements were performed on synchronous cells in this phase. Cold-sensitive β tubulin mutans tub2-401 and tub2-406 of S. cerevisiae were used. Two types of sensors were designed. A sensor with two evaporated gold strips 400 μm wide with a gap 8 μm between them was prepared on alumina substrate. The other sensor with 7 pairs of gold strips 10 μm wide and gaps from 2 to 10 μm was prepared on silicon substrate. Synchronization was achieved by warming the cell suspension to permissive temperature. Control experiments with empty sensor ...

Process modeling with bpmn

Process Modeling With BPMN
Course Description: Traditionally, process modeling has relied on proprietary tools and methodologies, raising the cost and limiting shared understanding. Today we have a widely accepted standard for process modeling, the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) from OMG, with near-universal adoption by modeling tools. BPMN looks a lot like traditional swimlane diagrams, but adds powerful new features that allow exception handling the hidden cost of real-world business processes to be modeled explicitly in the diagram. This course shows process modelers how to use BPMN correctly and effectively - to document existing processes, to analyze and improve processes, and even to collaborate with IT in executable process design. Creating effective models - those that stand on their own, clear and complete from the diagram alone, without accompanying explanation - depends on more than knowing the catalog of BPMN shapes and symbols. It requires understanding BPMNs hidden assumptions about basic concepts - What exactly is a process? What do sequence flows and message flows really mean? What does BPMN mean by starting, completing, sending, and receiving? You wont find the answers in the BPMN spec, but they are critical to using BPMN effectively. But that alone is not enough. Effective modeling also requires a methodology, starting from a blank page and progressing to a complete diagram. And it requires a style guide, a set of rules and best practices for making diagrams clear from ...

Bucket Elevator
This pendulum bucket elevator is very useful system for taking the material upward, distributing, feeding etc. Buckets on bearings remains always vertically down while passing vertical, angular or horizontal travel plane thus ensuring no wastage and dropping of material during travel This pendulum bucket elevator works in order to lift the material vertically and then moves horizontally to transfer the material at the desired distance for required process. One elevator can feed to many systems requiring only one feed point. This can also be interlocked to check which process or machine is demanding the material. This requires an electronic eye coupled with pneumatic system. Main Features: • Heavy Duty Stainless steel structure (MS Powder coated structure on demand) • Heavy Duty food grade bucket • Heavy Duty chain • All turn points in the elevator on sprocket and bearings • Variable speed frequency drive controlled system for adjusting the speed as per requirement • Easy cleaning systems • Option for air knife ie forced air cleaning of each bucket • No damage to product as there is no friction during the whole travel. • Very less floor space is required. • Elevator can be extended to feed further processes in future Applications: • Form fill seal machine feeding • Frying systems • Cooling systems • Connecting the two processes to make complete automated process • Any material feeding system • Transferring the material from one floor to another • Any type of product ...

New look at how life began - nick woolf (seti talks)

New Look at How Life Began - Nick Woolf (SETI Talks)
SETI Talks Archive: seti.org Life has two unique processes. The first is precision assembly, in which the shape of a molecule is selected, and it is "glued" to another precisely selected molecule. The second is when the assembler-glue-selector device exactly copies itself. The first item produced must be a structure so as to be survival-selected. In turn this selection needs to have the eventual effect of selecting the assembler-glue-selector. The system requires the development of two different polymers, one for structures, the other for information transfer. During the development of this precision, the proto-life is sustained by a dissipative process. It is explored why the assembler-glue-selector becomes RNA and ATP. Nitrogen provides the key NH bonds that are broken for "gluing" in both nucleic acids and amino acids. The requirements for the process, abundant availability of the nitrogenous organic materials from space, freshwater for the origin of membranes, and high temperatures and pressures for natural condensation reactions seem to uniquely select terrestrial geyser regions about 4.4 Gy ago as the site of the origin of terrestrial life.

The real structure of our planet - hydridic earth theory

The real structure of our planet - Hydridic Earth theory
The Hydridic Earth theory is a theory proposed in 1968 by Soviet geologist Vladimir Larin. The theory contradicts the generally accepted views on the Structure of the Earth. Starting with the first principles, Dr. Larin proposed an explanation for the observed distribution of elements throughout the Solar system. Solar wind in the primordial system pushed elements away from the center. The elements with lower ionization potentials were trapped by the Sun's magnetic field and held closer to the sun, the elements with higher ionization potentials were pushed to the outer fringes. Assuming that the primordial abundance of the elements was similar to the current composition of the sun, the scheme accounts for the present rocky and metallic inner planets and gaseous outer planets. The described distribution scheme suggested that Earth must contain orders of magnitude more hydrogen than actually observed. To account for it, Dr. Larin made the most controversial suggestion of metallic composition for the middle and lower mantles in the form of metal hydrides. He suggested that the silicate-oxide composition is confined to the upper mantle and crust primarily. Samukawa laboratory: aiming for the ultimate in top-down processing

Samukawa Laboratory: Aiming for the ultimate in top-down processing
[Keio Spintronics Network - Samukawa Laboratory , Tohoku University] Intelligent Nano-Process Laboratory, Targeted Research Division, Transdisciplinary Fluid Integration Research Center, Tohoku University Samukawa Laboratory: Aiming for the ultimate in top-down processing: Fabricating defect-free nanostructures by combining biotech and nanotech N The semiconductor devices that support todays technology are increasingly small, owing to progress in top-down processing. Consequently, the performance of devices has been improved. Such top-down processing is supported by optical lithography technology, where patterns are created from polymer materials using light to form masks for processing, and plasma etching technology, where processing is done using plasma. But both of these processes have problems when devices are made smaller. Q In optical lithography, miniaturization has progressed by using shorter wavelengths of light. But the use of shorter wavelengths is very close to its limit, due to lens effects. And with plasma etching, the problem is that the process creates a lot of defects in the surface structures of patterns, due to charge and UV being emitted from the plasma to the substrate. And when it comes to nanostructures, such defects cause big defects in device characteristics. In devices smaller than 22nm , it becomes very difficult to use these two technologies. N Now that innovative technology for fabricating nanostructures is needed, Tohoku Universitys Samukawa ...
